2002 Honda XR200: something bad happened in the top end!

  • Starting on the XR200 I picked up a few months ago that the previous owner mentioned a bent valve. I tear into the top end and try to figure out what happened and what parts I'll need to get this back on the trail.

Looks like a fairly low hour engine. Nice!
Watch that dowel pin in the cam for the advancer. They have a habit of falling out, so I usually take it out and put it with the CDI cover.

That pin was the first thing I grabbed!

Was your chain stretched and did you have any damage done?

Great job , I like the xr200 nice wee simple two valve engine .in the UK in my day you were allowed a 250 on a learners license so the 200 was overlooked a lot , so I went for the xl 250 , but the 200 looks like it would be really light and not much down in power etc . Be great to see it together again and running .👍

Yeah I had an ‘87 XR200 that had the lights and longer suspension travel. Excellent little woods bike

Only thing you didn’t show was the decompression lever mechanism everyone skips over it

@@Garage2Trail hey sorry for the late reply, when I kick the bike cable doesn’t move at all. bottom lever barely moves top does but if you take the cable mount off the whole lever wants to come out. I was wondering if there was something weird on them before I start pulling it apart. I’ve never worked on one before and the lack of video on it got me little scared lol

@@user-EBK847 to be honest, I don’t know off the top of my head. I’ll take a peek at the manual to see if that should slide out like that. The bottom one actuates off the kick start gear mechanism behind the side cover I think. I didn’t have my bottom end apart when I did mine. I’ll look at that in the book too and get back to you.

@@Garage2Trail thank you that would be really helpful if you get the time didn’t even expect a reply to be honest but if you ever need to open it up you should definitely make a vid it would probably be the only one on YT at least

Glad to try and help! It looks like that top shaft will pull out once you undo the bolt that holds the bracket on. It basically rides on the exhaust valve and opens it for a second when the kicker moves. You gotta make sure the top is adjusted while at TDC. That’s the only spot that it looks to have any adjustment on the decomp system and that may be why nothing moves down below when you kick it over. The book says 1-2mm or 1/16in of play in that lever up on the valve cover. I just sold the bike so if I get another I’ll be sure to cover that topic. Thanks for the heads up!

I had an ‘87 and recently acquired an ‘83. I think I need to keep that one. It’s got lights, long travel suspension and an 18” rear wheel.

@@SuicidalRiot yeah, I thought all did but apparently the early 80s 200R models had the 18” rears. My ‘87 had a 17” rear too.

I have a ttr 230 it’s my sons actually available to me and I find the 200cc class motor the cuddliest of the 4strokes! I have always had an interest in the xr200 you don’t see many well I don’t thanks!!!

It’s a great little bike. I had an ‘87 in the mid to late 90s and was awesome in tight woods. If this was an 87 I’d be keeping it when it’s done!

You are the best xr guy I know of so if I may is the xr250 worth a look I ask cause I found 1 while looking for a trials bike but I hesitated cause idk much about em if it were a 200 I’d have jumped on it

    • @Garage2Trail

@@davet3947 yeah they are good too for the tight woods. If I remember correctly, when dirt bike magazine did a shootout of the 250, 400 and 600, they all loved the 250 for the tighter and technical woods. My friend had a ‘99 250 with a 280 kit. It was the ultimate tight woods XR in my opinion.

@@mjrybread yeah the 250 on up got the better brakes and lights too. The late 80s XR200s were more serious woods bikes with longer travel suspension and lights. Still stuck with drums though.

I'm not a Honda guy I think Yamaha and Suzuki made better engines but XR200 2valve single cam was a pretty good motor. Only in the hands of an idiot it could bend the valve.
