Been doing that since I was a child. Put rice in the pot, fill the pot with water about a half inch to an inch above the rice. Heat on high until it boils, turn down to simmer for a few minutes, then take off the burner and let it sit until fully cooked. No rice cooker. Just rice and water in a pot.
Such a beautiful presentation by adorable Martha Stewart. We as Srilankans cook rice almost everyday as it our staple food .We make milk rice on every special occasion by boiling the rice with 2nd extract of coconut milk and salt and adding 1st extract of coconut milk and simmer until done .can be eaten with a spicy fish curry.
I recently have stopped cooking rice bc I haven’t been cooking it correctly, i have never seen the French method but thank you for showing so many different ways. I think it’s very American to talk about the melting pot of different rice techniques from other countries. I love that this production is showcasing the expansive knowledge and experience of Martha, she’s one of our great Artists in America. 💜💜💜
Okay wow, never even heard of bamboo grass nor did I know wild rice wasn’t rice and was the seed of marsh grass! This is why I love watching Martha 🧡🧡🧡
Love everything about your channel. The calmness, the beauty outside, inside, cooking, your voice and your wonderful personality. Like a kitchen you want to be in.
Thanks for doing this. I had resound myself to the fact that I couldn’t cook rice unless I had a rice cooker. I believe there are soo many like me. People may not want to admit that they can cook rice, but there are a lot of us.
Now you do not have to worry about cooking rice for a few days. Cooked rice stays good in the refrigerator for a few days definitely. Love these classes ma’am. I love reading your books too.
In Costa Rica we eat rice two or three times a day, but we add onions and red peppers, and water is the last thing to add, not at the beginning. Sometimes we also add carrots, peas, and corn kernels to have a "garden rice". It is delicious to accompany any kind of meat, beans or even in a soup. By the way, we use rice cookers too, but they make rice in just 15 minutes, I was amazed how long was the cooking time in Martha's rice cooker.
Thanks Martha for putting these full episodes (and Martha Bakes) on UA-cam. I remember watching these on PBS, always better than those crap shows on Food network or "Cooking" channel ! During the pandemic I been cooking at home and these videos will help me with my cooking only wished I had a beautiful kitchen like Martha's! 😀
Even the classic white rice has hundreds of varieties that have varying cooking procedures to get the optimum result. Very tricky. Always been an interesting topic even for someone who ate that every waking day ever since I can remember.
I eat rice all the time...lunch and dinner. Nowadays I try to use brown rice that's the reason I wanna watch this video. White rice is very basic and easy.

Rice is just so versatile.. it is really cooked all over the world in many different ways, paired with many different proteins and sides.. I never really thought about the commodity and demand of rice.. really an under appreciated dish.. ❤👍👍👍
I love love basmati and thai rice.though basmati is somewhat cheaper than thai rice, it fills me up better somehow. Thankyou martha. More videos please. Been a fan of you since 13 and now im 27
I have shared these episodes with my family. I have a lot of young families in our group who did not have cooking classes, like I did, in high school. These videos are perfect for cooking the basics correctly plus encouraging experimentation. I'm a huge fan.
What was described as the "French method" is actually the traditional way to cook rice in the region of India from where my family hails. We just add one more step (and may be this is just my mother): we spoon off the starch that floats to the surface while the rice is cooking.
Thought I would see a good tip, but I like my way better. I put 2 cups cold water in a pan, add 1 cup rice (Uncle Ben’s Converted), and salt. Bring to a boil uncovered, reduce to simmer, cover, let go for 20 minutes. Comes out perfect every time, not sticky. Sometimes I put a couple teaspoons of dry boullion (leave out the salt).
Dear Martha, I just love this series. I have to be gluten free since they altered the gene in wheat. I now read the rice gene is being altered. So many of us eat rice now. Do you have any ideas how this will affect us. Thank you.
You do realize that your body reads all foods the same way, and that there are genetic alterations to all foods in the current world, right? Nothing we eat is in it's original genetic form. Also, no animal or plant is in it's original genetic form either. No human is, either. Goodness. Just eat and be happy. We all die some day anyway, and usually, it's from either accidents or homicide. Or these days, Covid. Anyway, your body doesn't care what plants have what genes. It digests them all the same. The only reason to avoid gluten is if you have been officially, certified medically diagnosed with Celiac disease. Seriously.
If U stir-fry the rice pilaf in 2 tsps of ghee, it greatly enhances the flavor! Is black rice cooked 1 cup rice to 1 cup water, any suggestions? Thanks for sharing:)
You are incorrect. Sushi rice isn’t the same as glutinous rice which is also called sweet or sticky rice. Two different rice. Sushi is boiled in water and glutinous is steamed in water.
Just buy a Authentic Rice Cooker ( not the one $12 or $15, at Walmart or Target or Grocery Market, a real Rice Cooker cost about $80 to $100 ) or Instant Pot ( need to set the time ) All you have to do just push the button and it will do your work.
I wish Martha Stewart can make a Culinary Art university for all ages to join and learn her cooking skills and techniques. If they do I will enroll in their course hahaaa.
The best and most delicious one is Persian rice. They call it "Chelow" when is drained and "Cateh" when is cooked in a pan.Iran has her own rice which comes from north part of country provinces.Iranian rice is white and long and has a unique aroma and flavour.🍚👌
Every country cook rice their own ways ! We Persian like it fluffy and long and with butter and saffron and red berries on the top , we cook it mixed it with cooked lintels a cooked black eye Susan , or add lots fresh dill and Lima beans to it and cooke it all together . And we cook it 2 ways like spaghetti and other way is we cook rice water and butter all together ( this is the easy way for people who don’t know how to cook fancy rice ) we should teach You Martha how to cook a beautiful rice 🤷🏼♀️
Two things: First I love the way you chop an Onion like a human not like the Ta ta ta ta Chef. Makes me feel better, thank you. Second I cooked a Rissoto once following a recipe, even bought the correct rice. I was not at all happy with the result and assumed I had done it wrongly. Later I discovered it was supposed to be sloppy. I do not like sloppy rice, even as a pudding. I shall not make it again. :-)btw I am watching this episode of yours just to see if I could do it differently in some way.
The good thing about the french method is that it can help remove some of the arsenic present in rice. My favorite method is the traditional one but I never add butter. Only salt and some oil. Some people add some garlic while cooking and it is delicious!
Well if you're in the "Philippines" Filipino mom's teaches you like a pro no need for measurement cause all you need to measure a water is your second finger line and you have a perfect rice
Almost all asian countries use the finger method...it's an ancient secret rice martial art technique 🤡🤡 passed down through generations 🤫🤫🤫 shhhh don't tell the west how we do rice....plus i'm pretty sure we all have the same rice training as kids....our parents teach us to cook rice as soon as we are born 🤣...but if we burn the rice we get hit by a slipper ☠
So with the french method, do you drain off the excess water? It looks like it is way too much water for the rice amount. I just cook rice the regular way...the directions on the package, which is almost always water, salt, sometimes butter, and bring to a boil. Add rice and cook with the lid on for 15 minutes.

Only Martha can make a 25 min video about rice and have us all captivated
Been doing that since I was a child. Put rice in the pot, fill the pot with water about a half inch to an inch above the rice. Heat on high until it boils, turn down to simmer for a few minutes, then take off the burner and let it sit until fully cooked. No rice cooker. Just rice and water in a pot.

Ah that like nasi lemak in Malaysia also use coconut milk and add pandan leaves to give the rice more fragrant.

I do that f it's basmati rice. The amount of water depends on how dry your rice is.
