This is 4 years old and I listened to this and then Rabea’s demo on this and compared it to the PSA 2.0 and this won. I dropped my change on this Strymon today. It’s still working on a selling tool level all this work. Cheers 🍻
As usual strymon are amazing!! This pedal is incredible!! Most anticipated pedal for me and I would love to own one!! Seems to sound amazing at any setting!! Strymon are just an amazing pedal manufacturer and well and truly worth the money!!
Many complain about the price range of the pedal, I see why and I agree to a certain extent (I do not own any strymon pedal): - How about other pedals like King of Tone, or other Klons? They have way more limited versatility with regard to the range of voicings you can get (real tone depends really on your setup, and it has to be evaluated live). And yet people are kinda fine with it being "holy grails" of driven sounds. NOTE: I'm not saying they're comparable/better. In fact this demo is mainly focused on high gain tones other demos focus on low gain settings which this pedal is really capable of. - This pedal offers a full tonal control (presence, full eq, high/low gain, mid push) in with a noise gate (a good one), boost, expression pedal control, favourite switch, (which is not a stand alone it does work in conjunction with other strymon pedals - it is not mandatory to buy strymon's external switch). - Last but not least, you see on youtube a lot of demos where this pedal is compared to all OCDs, TS, RATs.. It tells a lot about the voicing capability of this drive. Considered that this pedal wasn't developed as emulator of the mainstream sounds, it is simply versatile enough to get you in the ballpark of each of the most inspiring voicings. If some don't like it, it's fine and go for the next. But saying it's a complete crap I consider it a far-fetched conclusion
Boost out can be used as a boot or favorite switch in other pedal. Exp out can be used with exp pedal as a volume pedal or morphing between 2 sounds (really cool feature).
can you please play in more different styles, like classic rock, hair metal, trash... when rob plays his style in every demo it all starts to sound the same
hugo h maybe they should do more sounds than the ones you mentioned "distortion, more distortion, more distortion". I mean your suggestions sounded like the description of their tones. They could actually do other tones than rock/metal too.
+100 Hugo. "You've absolutely nailed it", as they say on the X-Factor. It could be a tremolo pedal and we'd still get squealy detuned metal at 100mph. Luckily, "That pedal show" does a great review of this pedal.
A problem of over exposure maybe? It must be difficult to play other styles if that is not your thing, and you've made a million videos besides. Danish Pete and Mick are much more pleasing and interesting to my ear, but that's not Rob's fault. Personally I prefer to expand my own horizons nowadays by seeking out new shows and presenters... Does that sound a bit Star Trek?
@@joshuaH75 Thanks. Yeah, tried one yesterday for under 5 minutes. Was immediately impressed with how good it sounded at every setting. Super versatile. Not sure about the organic side yet. Loud store. Needed a owner opinion or someone that is experienced with the the Riverside, to get honest unbiased review. If so, that box is a game changer. I am just used to all analog pedals, so hesitant. Just wondering if it's too good to be true. Thank you!

Thing with Strymon is that if you fall in love with one of their pedals, there's no substitute and you don't care what it costs you to get that into your life. I've got probably two pedals in total that I'd never part with, and one of them is my Flint.
James Cole I have a Möbius, Dig and Flint. Strymon does a killer job having niche capabilities like the golden ratio on DiG or Destroyer on Möbius, but still has modes that are traditional in nature like the Tremolo or Chorus that usable for most gigs.
I would love to see some diversity in your playing Rob! I'm watching your content for like 3 years now and opposed to Bea/Pete/Mick, you seem to play the same riffs/lead lines/scales over and over again in your demos. Which is somehow disappointing because you are a very talented, intelligent man and guitar player. Otherwise the quality of the video is top notch as always, greetings from Germany!
Great to know Lee has taken over Santa's job. This year I'm obviously going to get that Gibson Byrdland I've wanted for 35 years instead of the chocolate orange and pair of socks I always receive. Happy days UA-cam land!!!
Dear Santa, All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth, but I'll take that Chapman guitar in Chappers hands and this Strymon pedal from the Captain! And the Djent breakdown at the end was the absolute T!T$!!!
This pedal + Comp + TS + Noise gate on front = Modern "Djent" dream. The front end and initial note attack is a little round, but hey. that's what it was designed to do.
Cameron Crowley I hear they are going to continue as a three piece, i wonder if one of them is going to take over electric guitar or are they just going to abandon that part of their music.
Birki gts I think I'd buy one of these just as a tribute to Piotr if I had the money... it's the same to me with the Strykon "BigSky" and the Kate Bush song of the same name... Strymon just know how to name their gear!!!
No, they're actually going to invite their friends to play guitar - both in studio and live. I'm going to see their first gig after Piotr's death in Ferbruary - we'll see how this works out. But I suspect EPIC.
progrmr - Some brainwashed consumer somewhere will be stupid enough to spend that on a pedal like this.....i personally think it sounded sh*t and chapman made it sound terrible with his crappy pick squealy style of playing. You can buy a better overdrive pedal than this for 1/5th of the price.
Depends, if you want something semi-transparent to boost your amp's natural gain structure, boss blues driver, ibanez tube screamer, or timmy, Archer or OCD, all of which are only half the price. If you want something to just stand out on its own, you should probably spend a few hundred more dollars on a better amp since digital distortion's almost always trash on its own, even in that strymon tbh.
Karol, I've got a marshall bluesbreaker that sounds great, you can probably pick 1 up these days for £50-60, or you can get the marshall guv'nor for the same, or spend a bit more and get a tubescreamer, or be adventurous and buy 1 of those hotone xtomp pedals for £200 and get about 20 or so distortion pedals plus all the other things you get on it. Surely you must know the overdive/distortion pedals you can buy for a reasonable price, but if you wanna waste £300 on this, go ahead 🙂
duck, funny you should say that because I was going to say that for £300-400 or thereabouts you can buy a decent little valve amp, such as the ibanez tubescreamer amp or something similar, there are literally loads to choose from.

Was pretty interesting when neither of demos talked about it and I bet all of you guys would instantly notice and announce it.

Just FYI the mini pedal is actually the same for all diffrent uses of TRS pedals ( Tap tempos/Favorite switch and the boost for the riverside) There's a couple of dip-switches inside of the pedal to change that :)

Lemonpi3 no when u hit favorite it just does that setting that u set up. Hit back the right side button and it goes back to where u had it. No blending.
This is the best distortion pedal I have ever found. I highly recommend this to everyone. It might seem a little expensive but it is well worth it!

Combines the A and the D to great satisfaction!
You had my like at the opening riff!
This is a badass pedal! I’ve owned it for about three years and it’s crazy good!
Does it sound organic or overly digital?
Angelvox1 very organic to me. I don’t get a hint of digital at all like I have with some distortions on some multi-effects pedals.

Enjoy your vintage tones. Best comment on this show ever :) The vintage guys should make sure they view the show on VHS btw :)
Love the band riverside, and i actually think this pedal sounds great.
Looks like a great option for someone who wants a lot of OD sounds in one pedal.

I keep getting confused on UA-cam notifications, why the chanel not called Chappers and the Captain?
About the name, Riverside is a city in Southern CA that's not too far from where Strymon is. I'd guess that's the basis of the name.
Will Moore you're correct. That's what they named it after.
Will Moore I'm guessing it's named after the street Riverside Drive in the San Fernando Valley which is even closer to Strymon. The Riverside is an overdrive pedal/Riverside Dr.
Man, Rob never runs out of riffs, has anyone noticed that?
Because he repeats a lot haha, half of the riffs in this demo were "just" Dorje riffs.
But he doesn't repeat as much as Lee does lol so that must be why i don't notice it much.
sounds good :)

which Champman guitar is that, nice!
I have a question for you
often I see you playing a barre chord ...we'll take G major for instance ...you then drop the G root a semi tone to the locrian note F# ....what is that chord now that you've changed the root position ?
thanks
gaulty54
John Gault
Technically speaking, that would make the chord a Gmaj7 since F# is the 7th, or as you masterfully put, the Locrian note of G Major.
It would not sound as clear though due to the fact that you would be playing the 7th, which is a color tone, in the bass.
John Gault
If none of the notes change besides the root, the chord is a Gmaj/F# or you could just think of it as an inversion of a Gmaj7 in which the maj7 is the lowest note.
The chord has more of a major 7 sound than a locrian sound because the chord still has a major quality not a half diminished quality
+Joseph Mings cheers mate ....I know what you mean ......I didn't mean by using the F# it made it locrian ...it was merely a reference
I thank you kindly ...makes complete sense ...ps check out Rick beato if you've not already ....mega technical but makes sense

thanks again
Ermmm... Rory? You okay there friend? Is this editing a secret cry for help? xD
another question completely unrelated
I bought a Gibson les Paul gold top 2015 and was wondering if would hold its value in years to come
I personally bought the guitar specifically for the changes and absolutely love it ..thanks
I'm about half way through Santa Claus 2 the movie. I think he's going to get it on with the head teacher but marriage in 28 days is a big ask.
When you hit the favorite button, does it take over the current on? Or does it blend with the settings you currently have with the on button? Curious if it just takes over, sounded kinda like a blend a bit to me between the two
Lemonpi3 no when u hit favorite it just does that setting that u set up. Hit back the right side button and it goes back to where u had it. No blending.
el capistan review would be great too.
Would be cool to see a demo if the Huges & Kettner amps
Where'd you get that Santa hat?
Really want a friedman amp, but the cabs are so expensive! Looking at the Runt 50!
