  • In today's video I have Lee Abraham join me with his latest purchase, a Strymon Riverside Overdrive pedal.
    The Strymon Riverside is slightly different from a lot of other drive pedals as it has a JFET input with a digital drive circuit, and I think this pedal sounds FANTASTIC!
    Here is what Strymon says about the Riverside.
    Riverside’s cascading gain stages create harmonically rich tones that are immensely musical and natural-from silky clean overdrive to colossal distortion, and all points between. Our analog JFET front-end ensures that Riverside responds to your guitar with uncompromised dynamics and feel. The precision crafted DSP generates dynamic complexity and pleasing harmonics at every stage, letting your amp shine at any gain level. Riverside takes your amp to places you never knew it could go.
    The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

    It's funny to hear you lamenting that people come over to your house with new gear and they make you spend money, because you come over to my house via UA-cam and do pretty much the same thing.

    The one thing that's not mentioned is the built in noise suppressor/gate in both this and the Riverside which is amazing and very easy to set. It makes both pedals super quiet and live, for me, a joy with the high gain settings. Definitely not to be underestimated here.

    Excellent video and great performance! The Riverside sounds fantastic and it’s a great versatile overdrive tool with so many killer tones and smart usable features that you can enjoy. I really love that it has his on personality and character!
    Very interesting option for anyone who is interested in something different but good.

    I did the same thing... I used the Riverside as my pedal platform amp-in-a-box style pedal, paired with the tc electronic impulse loaded with custom made IR. Great stuff! With a midi controller I can program some interesting tones, from squeeky clean to muff style distortion. Amazing value for money. It stands in also as a clean boost and a noise gate.

    I've had my Riverside for a couple of years now and I have it in my living room set-up and put it in front of my Princeton 68 RI and it work to create any level of drive sound from a high gain amp type distortion to a low gain overdrive and even pretty clean sound. I leave the amp on about 4.5 and use the Riverside to control the volume and the EQ and use a delay after that and use the amp reverb. Very versatile.

    They mention the pedal and the IR but apparently not the pretty obvious reverb and delay that's been applied. Like are we hearing this straight off the TC unit, or what else is involved? There's definitely more than just the 2 pedals featured. Be nice to know the entire signal chain.

    • @pCeLobster
      @pCeLobster 6 місяців тому

      Not exactly. All the distortion is DSP. There are no analog clipping components. The only analog part is the front end. So it's not digitally controlled analog. It's an analog clean initial gain stage fed into a DSP drive processor.

    If u can't afford the Tonex, pair up the Riverside with the NuX Amp Academy. That is my actual setup. As for my "wet" effects (modulations, delays, reverbs, compressions, wah, etc...), i have my Boss MS3 connected to the NuX Amp Academy's effect's loop. The Boss MS3 also acts as my MIDI switcher for my Riverside, to recall any of the 16 presets that i have saved in the Riverside (anything from edge of break up right up to really high gain & with anything in between). As for the NuX Amp Academy, i use mostly the Fender Twin Reverb with it's matching IR, as the main amp tone (so, i don't have to rely on any given backline amps...i just use the backline guitar amp's effect's Return). I then send the 1/4" output of the Amp Academy (with the Cab IR bypassed) with the Riverside sound (or without) & the "wet" fx from the Boss MS3, into a guitar amp's effect's Return while the Amp Academy's built-in DI out (XLR connector) WITH the Cab IR, sent to FOH or for recording without having to mic up the actual physical amp's speaker cab....

    With the Tone X why use drive pedals, when you can used a captured cranked Amp? Then you can just cycle through its presets changing the gain stages as needed. PS I have used the River Side Drive to push my Clean single Channel Amps and separately a Tone X into the return of an Amp Head and Cab for additional options.

    A digital model just like plugins etc. I want to hate it, but it always sounds pretty good in videos I have seen. Built in noise gate too. Digital can be all good if the analog part of the unit feeding those ones and zeros is top-notch. My Belle Epoch Deluxe echo pedal is evidence of that. It makes stuff sound so good. Folks say that delay pedal colours the sound too much though. Those folks probably would not like an actual Echoplex either. They colour the tone too.

    • @lankududniteshift
      @lankududniteshift Рік тому +1

      No, this pedal is a pre-amp type of pedal (there is no onboard power amp). U can use this pedal to go direct into the front of a guitar amp, in which this pedal acts just like any drive pedal, or, u can place the Riverside in a guitar amp's effect's Return (using the guitar amp's power amp section & bypassing the guitar amp's preamp section), in which case the Riverside will act as your preamp. With a MIDI switcher or a loop switcher which has MIDI out, u can save up to 300 presets on the Riverside & easily recall any of the 300 presets from the loop switcher/MIDI switcher (if u ever use up all the 300 presets, which i doubt....the most presets that i have saved on my Riverside are currently in total, 16 presets...). This is one digital drive pedal that don't sound digital but sounds more like & feels like an analog drive/preamp pedal but with MIDI capabilities. To have the MIDI & presets capabilities, u would need to configure it via it's USB connector which is hidden in the pedal! U would have to open up the Riverside's casing to access the USB connector...a bit cumbersome but well worth it & u only need to do it once only. Btw, my Riverside's presets' recall is via my Boss MS3 (which apart of sending Preset Changes to the Riverside, the Boss MS3 gives me all the "wet" effects. Sorry for the long reply....

      I think that’s because we often tend to dial in our favourite sound in a drive pedal, which ends up being roughly the same sound, with perhaps a few harmonic / EQ nuances attributable to the new/latest pedal. I’ve been guilty of this - I’m not going to dial in a sound a don’t like just to show the differences between two pedals, and I have a sound in my head that I’m always looking (listening) for. To name but two, Shawn Tubbs and Sasha Ivantic so the same thing - always lovely but generally the same sound.
