A Beginner-Friendly Betta Fish Tank Setup Anyone Can Build!
Welcome to my 8-gallon betta fish tank setup! In this video, I'll guide you through the process of creating an affordable and beginner-friendly environment for my betta, Stitch.
To keep costs down, I've opted for epiphyte plants attached to lava rock, eliminating the need for a nutrient-rich substrate. The tank features an AquaEl 30-liter shrimp tank with inert quartz sand contrasting beautifully with the lava rock.
Starting with tank build, I arranged the lava rocks to create hiding spots and caves for Stitch. Then, I carefully selected an array of plants including Java Fern, Anubias, Bucephalandra, and Taiwan moss, providing both color and hiding spots.
After cycling the tank with Dr. Tims ammonia, I introduced Stitch along with a crew of algae eaters: horned nerite snails, amano shrimp, and cherry shrimp. Stitch's curiosity led him to explore his new home, interacting with the tank's inhabitants.
However, Stitch developed a habit of glass surfing, possibly due to stress or boredom. Despite stable water parameters, I experimented with feeding routines and considered rescaping the tank to alleviate his behavior.
Throughout the video, you'll see the tank's progression, from initial setup to Stitch's interactions, offering insights into creating a harmonious betta environment.
Stay tuned for more updates on Stitch's tank journey and tips for maintaining a thriving betta aquarium! And don't forget to check out the B-roll footage to see Stitch in action when I'm away from the tank.
I hope you found my planted betta tank setup helpful and were able to use for inspiration with your own tank.
This style of betta tank will work for a 5 gallon betta tank, an 8 gallon betta tank, and a 10 gallon betta tank without issue.
Just adjust the size of the rocks you add to the tank to ensure that there is plenty of swim space available for your betta fish.

Wonderful aquarium. Beautiful plants and fauna. 😀
Cheers mate :)
A lovely fish 🩵 My Amanos stole all my sinking pellets and ran off with them 😂
Haha, yea thats a daily occurrence here with my guppies and betta fish.
I had one Amano walk right up to one of my corydoras and take the pellet it was eating and there were a bunch with no fish eating them but I guess the one the cory was eating looked better or something 🤣
@@GlassBoxDiaries that's hilarious! I caught mine and put them in the community tank as the poor neocaradinas weren't getting a look in!
When they glass surf excessively, is it possible they’re more cognizant than other fish and require decor changes more often for a change of scenery? Perhaps they feel too bored otherwise. I know you don’t typically do this because it can stress them out but are there exceptions?
There could be, he randomly stopped glass surfing after around 3 months in the tank though. It was as if he just realized it was his reflection one day and calmed down :)
cool tank bro
Cheers mate :)
is it okay to cycle the tank before putting gravel and the decor in?
Yea :)
good to know. Thank you :)
Hi where can i get that size lava rocks ?
I got mine from Horizon Aquatics, they are UK based but ship to Europe too if you are in those areas :)
@@GlassBoxDiaries I'm in the UK nice il take a look now
how many gallons is this tank?
I think he said 8 gallon at the beginning of the video
Its 8 US gallons (30 liters)
Thought you might like this video. I watch Alex's channel a lot as he offers a lot of information ua-cam.com/video/dkgp3m_enBU/v-deo.html
Your betta and his tank is really enjoyable. I am glad to see your channel growing so much and seems to be progressing quickly! I really enjoy your information, presentation and camera shots.
Cheers mate, I am a huge fan of Alex, I think i'm about half way through all of his videos now as I watch them instead of TV now :) Thanks forthe link, I will watch it a little later tonight.
he's stress coz it's too much water movement.
Good point, I will try move the sponge filter behind one of the rocks to reduce water flow.
BEAUTIFUL! Agreed, I think that sponge is going waaaay to much. Mine prefer very gentle flow, Good luck!
@@GlassBoxDiariesI use the same sponge filter you're using...I think. The one with the little area beneath the sponge with media?? Anyway....I use a little air flow control valve "gadget" on the tubing and I then the flow can be lowered if that's what you would like to do....if moving the sponge filter behind the rock doesn't work as well s you want. I never tried that before.
Youve also said its a beginners tank and youre using live plants and Beta jump and youve no lid
12:09 - You can see the lid on the tank.
Theres plenty of beginner live plants in the hobby.
U do know that’s a female
How are you getting to that? The vendor said it was male, I dont see an egg spot and it has larger, wider ventral fins than my female.
@@GlassBoxDiariesThey are a little similiar, females and males in Plakats but females are shaped differently from my experience. My female bettas are obviously different in shape than my males. I will have to check out where to look for the egg spot. Your betta looks to be a male to me...the shape anyway.
@@heaven7360 Yea i'm pretty sure its male too mate ;)
@@GlassBoxDiariesAt the very end of this video I found he is feeding his female Plakat betta. ua-cam.com/video/IyRyqOZjamE/v-deo.html
