The Easiest Shrimp Tank Setup You’ll Ever See! (No Filter, No Heater, No CO2)
Welcome to the 7-month update for my 6.6-gallon (25-liter) Pearlweed shrimp tank! This tank has been running using the Walstad Method, with a layer of topsoil capped by fine gravel, and relies entirely on plants for natural filtration. Inside, there’s a colony of Bloody Mary Neocaridina shrimp, though spotting them can be tricky with all the lush plant cover.
Pearlweed Growth & Maintenance
The pearlweed has thrived in this setup and now requires regular trimming to keep it under control. On average, I trim it every two months, cutting it back by about one-third. While I don’t replant the trimmings in this tank due to space limitations, I’m considering using them to establish pearlweed in another tank. Pearlweed is an excellent natural water purifier and provides great coverage for shrimp, fertilized eggs, and fry.
In fact, I’m planning to use some trimmings to create a breeding base for celestial pearl danios in another tank. Despite this tank being unheated and averaging a cool 18°C (65°F) in winter, the pearlweed and shrimp are thriving. Growth has slowed slightly with the colder temperatures, but it remains healthy and vibrant.
Updates on the Bloody Mary Shrimp Colony
The Bloody Mary shrimp in this tank are doing well, breeding happily among the dense plant cover. Recently, I gave ten shrimp to a friend with a larger tank to help him establish his own colony. I’m even considering giving him more in the coming weeks to maximize his breeding potential and possibly receive some shrimp back next summer.
The main challenge with this setup is that the shrimp are so well-hidden it’s hard to keep track of their numbers. Unlike my other tanks, where shrimp come out during feeding, this tank has an abundance of biofilm and algae, so the shrimp are constantly grazing and rarely gather at the front. This can make it difficult to enjoy their activity, which has me considering moving them to a new tank.
I’m currently cycling two new tanks that might work well for the Bloody Mary shrimp. One is a Walstad Method setup, and the other will feature an Anubias lava rock island with a filter. I’m also thinking of pairing Medaka rice fish with shrimp, as their compatible water parameters and added bioload could enhance plant growth while creating a balanced ecosystem.
Water Parameters
This tank has been remarkably stable, requiring only top-offs to counter evaporation rather than full water changes. The pearlweed, combined with beneficial bacteria and archaea, keeps nitrogen compounds in check, ensuring a safe environment for the shrimp.
Many worry about TDS levels creeping up without water changes, but that hasn’t been an issue here. The pearlweed absorbs nutrient salts and heavy metals as it grows, helping to maintain balance. I’ve also stopped dosing shrimp salts to increase gH and kH, and there haven’t been any problems with molting.
Feeding Routine
The shrimp get minimal supplemental feeding since the pearlweed provides ample surface area for biofilm and algae. I add about a quarter of a Hikari Mini Algae Wafer each day, which the shrimp pick at throughout the day. Interestingly, research suggests Neocaridina shrimp are micro predators, consuming small organisms like nematode worms and microcrustaceans, which may contribute to their diet in this tank.
This has changed how I view Walstad Method setups. Even with such minimal feeding, the plants are thriving, showing how biofilm, algae, and shrimp waste create a self-sustaining system. I’m even tempted to experiment with a pearlweed shrimp jar, feeding only algae and biofilm to see if the system can support itself.
Final Thoughts
This shrimp tank has been easy and affordable to maintain, starting with just a single pot of pearlweed and a Walstad Method setup. With no filter or heater, running costs are low, making it a great choice for budget-conscious hobbyists.
The main downside is the dense plant cover, which makes it hard to spot the shrimp. However, regular maintenance and trimming could address this if visibility is a priority.

Long Fin Vs Short Fin Betta Fish - What's The Best Option For Your Aquarium?
Mine like to hang around over the weeping moss, on the water wisteria leaves and upside down picking at the salvinia roots. It works pretty well as it shows them at all different levels of the tank. That pearl weed sure is a good way to get a well planted tank quickly, easily and cheaply though.
Yea its a great option for cheap tanks :)
Awesome videos, mate 👍. I'm just setting up my first shrimp tank. Can't wait until it's ready so I can go shrimp shopping 😁.
Cheers mate :) Good luck with the tank!
I read online that it should be at least 20 gallons? But I truly don't know because everyone has their own experiences, but I did buy a 20 gallon long because I wanted to make sure to give them enough space
They will thrive in a 20 gallon but my neon tetras really aren't that active and a lot of the time they just kind of bimble around the tank.
good looking tank! i've read somewhere that bucephalandra usually struggle during cycling, so it's recommended they are added after the cycle is complete.
Cheers mate, yea I have changed my cycling method since this tank and I add all my plants after the cycle now :)
Better to have it a shrimp tank 1st and then you'll likely have less chances of predatory behavior 💚🩵
Thanks for sharing :)
Great video, how often do you change water?
I only do water top ups in this specific tank. My next video will be the 7 month update for it that goes into more detail :)
This was a great video, I'm so happy to finally see the setup and progress of this tank. It's probably one of my favorite aquascapes that you've done, good work, Shaun.
Cheers mate, its my favorite too :)
Should add some moss or guppy grass for the fry to hide in and also your filter is way too strong and could be sucking up all the eggs and fry.
Thanks for sharing.
Water lettuce are great too as guppy grass for shrimps and small fish.
Agreed mate, its an under rated plant, I have it in all of my tanks now :)
I had 3 male bettas in a 30gl that I hatch and kept together never did anything to each other put some zebras with them, the 8 zebras was all gone the next morning
Pack hunters 🤣
Amazing mate! How many mountain minnows?
Cheers mate, theres 8 adults and a couple of fry that hide in the java fern right now :)
@GlassBoxDiaries isn't it too crowded for 10 gal? Or won't it be?:)
@@VodkaRedbullTonic Well I originally planned on having 6 in there so I will probably give the fry to someone or trade them in for credit with a local aquatic shop.
nice video pal , in your opinion which is best small and hardiest shoaling fish , i asked my local fish shop lad but that might be like the fish monger shouting rotten heron , never going to happen .
Cheers mate, if its around 10-15 gallons in size then I would go with Chili Rasboras, White Cloud Mountain Minnows or Celestial Pearl Danios, mine have been very easy to keep.
Thank you it is the best way never could think about.
Cheers mate :)
To save the babies (shrimp & fish) put a sponge on the filter intake.
Thanks for the tip :)
Nice!
Cheers mate :)
Where do you buy dr tims ammonia in the UK
I've only been able to find it on Amazon so get it there.
I've bought an extra two cory cats before because they would have been all that would be left at the LFS after I got my six, and I didn't want them to be sad without a school.
I'm the same, I was curious if retailers add an awkward amount to get more sales 😂
Nice one
Cheers mate :)
On reddit you will see people with fish rooms crying about not being payed enough to live...😂😂😂😂😂
Yea, I get on when I can but I think UA-cam/Research Gate are better sources of infomation.
@GlassBoxDiaries reddit is the worst, its just a liberal echochamber that thinks every fish needs an olympic size swimming pool, cries about gmo glofish but show off their inbred fancy goldfish that can barely swim.
Thanks for another informative video. I appreciate you showing the ups and downs of the process. The tank is beautiful
Cheers mate, glad they are helping :) Got a lot of downs with one of my new tanks but its video wont be up for a month or two but it does seem to be slowly turning around :)
Is it just me or does your filter media look backwards? As in the water should be flowing through course, then medium, then fine mechanical media, but yours is set up to flow through fine, then medium, then course.
Kind of mate, thats usually when the foam is being used for mechanical filtration to catch debris before it gets to the biological media in larger filters. In this, the filter floss is the only mechanical filtration so I put it first. The two other foam blocks are about the same PPI, just one came with the filter, the other is custom cut so they are different colors both being used as biological filter media in this.
Simple yet pleasing to the eyes
Exactly my style :)
Whats the dimensions of the tank please tell Thankyou
Its 50x30x30cm mate :)
I just got this light and set it up last weekend and at the time I could not find any video that was decent to show setup. The timing of this is just perfect. Thank you so much for this video
No worries mate, glad its helping people :)
Is there anything supporting the plywood which you’re 10 gallons are sitting on??
The larger racks have support beams under them, the smaller racks dont.
I used to make floating ball from tied up riccia for my shimos and black molly fry
Thats a good idea mate, I will have to give it a try :)
Cool video
Cheers mate :)
I must’ve been unlucky, because every Betta I had tried to eat my Neocardina
Shame mate :(
Something about animals enjoying watching other animals like humans bird watching us extremely cute 😭😭
Agreed :)
My betta loves the dried Hikari daphnia so Im gonna try some frozen fresh daphnia next💚
I'm going to get some freeze-fried Hikari bloodworm and daphnia soon :)
Great video. I have a 180 liter tank (lotsa plants and hiding places) with 25 cardinals and 8 corydoras sterbai. How much honey gouramis would you add? I'm thinking 1 male and 4 females. Or could I do 2 males and 4 females?
Cheers mate, I think either could work, both of my males formed their own territories in my tank and they only chase the other one away if it comes into its zone. Theres kind of a no mans land in the foreground and left hand side where they tend to play without issue.
Like tiny Arctic Char
Yea they look so cute :)
Just lost my betta Caspian. He loved to watch things in his tank too. He'd watch his shrimps too
They are so cute :) sorry for your loss mate.
Whaaaaat, this is basically the same price as the hygger one I've been buying for my tanks, the one with a plastic case. Is that just what's inside the case of the other one? But this one doesn't say it has a safety shutoff for overheating, and the one with the case does, so I'll stick with those ones. PS I think the temperature discrepancy is unavoidable unless you have flow directed at the heater at all times. It only knows the temp of the water directly around it.
No mate they are different heaters with different elements inside if your talking about the one I'm thinking of :).
How do you keep those rotala alive? I’ve had terrible luck with them in low tech tanks.
Is it definatley Rotala Rotundifolia you have? Theres a lot of Rotala variants in the hobby and some are very difficult to keep submerged. Apparently a lot of Rotala Indica gets mislabled as Rotala Rotundifolia too confusing things further.
I bought a red robin female gourami from PAH, and the red disappeared and it turned brown green, and at just over a year old, she is a chunky 2½ inches. She grew up sharing space with an orange male lyretail killifish, who refused to be chased by her and they respected each other. When the killifish died recently of old age, the gourami spent a long time staying in one spot instead of moving around. I thought it was maybe lonely and bought a small female from the same shop and tank, and she came to life again. But after a week or so has become aggressive to the tiny one who just keeps out of the way, so I took the little one out and am waiting to see if she calms down. She even attacked my hand when pruning plants, which she never did before😢
Thanks for sharing mate, I hope she calms back down again!
Neons are famous for their poor health due to overbreeding and poor breeding practices. They are notorious fin nippers. Their lookalike cousins, the cardinals are healthier and don’t nip fins.
Agreed mate, I was really lucky with my bunch of neons but some of my friends have lost all of theirs within weeks.
question nol related to this video. WHAT IS THE FLOATING BLACK RING I HAVE SEEN IN ANOTHER OF YOUR VIDS - HAS FLOATING PLANTS CONTAINED IN IT? THANKS
Its a floating plant ring. You can get them on Etsy pretty cheap but they are on Amazon too. I get the 3D printed ones and they let me control where my plants are so I can move them if they are blocking light to submerged plants.
@@GlassBoxDiaries TNX. I WILL SEE IF I CAN GET IN THE Philippines. really ENJOY YOUR VIDS!!
At least 10… proceeds to get 80 million 😂😂
🤣 I moved the bulk of the colony over :)
I had issues with my Hygger 957 within a few weeks after getting it. The timer quit working and the buttons weren't responding. I posted a review on Amazon to warn others. Hygger then contacted me and had me send a few short videos of the issue. Next thing I knew, they sent me a new light. The new one has performed flawlessly for over a year now. Now, that is customer support.
Thats great news, its good to see brands doing stuff like that in this hobby! It seems like they are doing their best to dominate the space.
love the review. been considering this brand for awhile. for some reason, my expensive fluval lights aren’t quite doing the trick. maybe i’m messing up some nutrients or something else…
Cheers mate, is it a Fluval Aquasky? I hear alot of bad things about them.
I had a red betta who did not get along with them but I have some ghost shrimp and zebra Danios now with my blue betta. The first day he chased them all a bit but he has been SO CHILL with all of them now. He doesn't even get jealous over food with them because he knows mom will make sure he gets to eat
Bless him, at least he calmed down :)
Great, convincing review, but... which accent is this again?
Cheers mate, its a Mackem accent from Sunderland, England :)
Same with me. My males leave the shrimp alone, but my female is relentless.
I'm curious why so many female bettas eat the shrimp.
I.breed Medaka here in Singapore. Medaka fry love green water....
Agreed, going to try incorporate green water when hatching next year :)
Cheers mate - I know this video is about light, but I wanted to ask which filter you are using for the larger tank with all the duckweed? It looks like a mix of an external/internal filter
Its the Fluval FX2 Canister filter :)
Shrimp are teleporters 🦐💥
They can be fast when they need to be :)
Thank you for this…I’m hoping to set up a tank in the spring and haven’t kept fish in decades. Very helpful in buying a new nightstand as that is where the tank will go.
Cheers mate, always glad to help people :)
All my bettas have been fine with shrimp, it's snails they go mad for & want to smash them against things! So mean!
I've seen some bettas constantly flaring at snails but mine have been fine with them so far :)
My set ups usually run one of these 957s or two 978s
They are such a good light for the price :)
@@GlassBoxDiaries 'cant think of any other for price/value?' srsly? Its an older model, Hygger itself has a successor to the 957 which is the HG016 ... with convenient remote and all those featurs, and practicly the same price on Amazon +/- 5 bucks depending on coupon offers. Bit lower power consumption for bit more Lumen output on top, further showing the 957 is old. And for those who dont rly need that high of power (if you cut the time you are among them) there is Nicrew with its RGB+W, especially if the tank isnt the highest these can easily be the better choice.
@@diedampfbrasse98 The Hygger HG016 is more expensive than the 957 on the British Amazon and only available in three sizes.
