I remember listening to this for the first time as a teen when it had just come out on MTV, it made me cry and back then I didn't even speak English. One day, 15 years later, I hear it again. By then I have finished a degree in English and I am married to an anglophone, living in an English speaking country...and I am driving, the song comes on, I understand each word and I have to park the car. That's how much it moved me. Brilliant choice, thank you!
You’re pretty much describing my reaction to it. I cry every time I hear it, my first also I couldn’t make up the words and meaning. An Irish husband later, here we are, the song lives in me
You, young man, have a beautiful soul. What u said at the end of the vid was very touching. Thank u. Love and best wishes to everyone. Watching from the Rep of Ireland 🇮🇪☘️🇮🇪
Gabriel wrote this song with Dolly Parton in mind for the female part, I love Dolly, but I think its perfect with Kate, she was a fantastic talent back in the day.
Kelly, I love that you found Kate. Her song, Cloudbusting, is my favourite song of songs. I studied (Jazz) singing 20+ years ago and sang some of her songs in my exams: Babooshka (we made a swing version of it), and The Wedding List. She wrote songs like "The man with the child in his eyes" when she was in her mid-teens. She also did dance, hence her own, expressive and somewhat eccentric choreographies in her videos of, for example, Wuthering Heights. I "fell" for Donald Sutherland (the white haired president actor in The Hunger Games) watching the Cloudbusting video. My sister had her 1985 album "Hounds of Love", which I, as an 11 year old girl, listened to on cassette tape for hours and hours, just turning the tape over when one side was finished, again and again. Kate is for me very well illustrated on her Never Forever album cover (oh, those decades of proper album cover ART!). Go, have a look. And listen....
So happy that you have found out about the genius that's Kate Bush, I'm sure that you will have a wonderful time listening to her albums. She started writing songs from when she was 12 years ago, "The Man With The Child In His Eyes" was written when she was 13, which is just crazy. She was a trailblazer for women artists in so many ways in the UK her very first single Wuthering Heights went to number 1, it was first time ever that a song written by a female singer had ever done that! As for me I was there from the start, my advantage being I live in the UK and in the same part of the country where she grew up - showing my age now 😀😀 - unfortunately I missed her first live tour but I was extremely lucky to get a ticket to one of her "Before The Dawn" series of concerts in 2015, when she performed live again. It was a fantastic experience and I'm sure that you will have a fantastic time listening to her.
At the time this song was released, I remember it related to the shutdown of the mining industry in England by the Thatcher government and the terrible impact it had on the miners and families. Lines such as "never thought I could be effected", "for every job, so many men, so many men no-one needs". Song beautifully expresses the pain of the time.
In England? What about Wales? It decimated Wales. Reads like such a typically English view. Russian miners sent food parcels to starving UK mining families, incidentally.
This is one of my faves, not only is it a beautiful song, it really shows how great their Voices are too, a pure sound. Peter Gabriel's voice was so under rated, he has a really great voice. 😎👌
@@SKOLAH So was Madonna, but she still was also under rated to, being a huge international star doesn't mean people won't under rate you, as not everyone will be a fan, cause they don't rate that person as a talented star despite how well known they are, like so many can be.
I lost my first love, best friend, hug partner in 2014 - so if anyone out there has one...cherish them and “don’t give up” 🌈 TY Jay! I really needed to hear this song tonight 🕊
"So" was possibly the best album of the 80's, and certainly one of the most musically significant. Peter's voice is incredible: no other qualifiers needed. Kate too. I saw him on this tour in my favorite venue, Merriweather Post Pavilion in MD, and it's still one of the top three shows I've ever seen. On the song "In Your Eyes" (also from So) he has the famous Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour and his band join him, and for the concert they were the opening act, but also came on stage for the encore and the combined bands played an hour long encore! Peter also did his crowd-surfing act during "Lay Your Hands on Me" (that must give his security guys nightmares). Please do more from this album! My favorite is "Red Rain" but the big hit bangers were "Big Time" and "Sledgehammer". "Mercy Street" is another beautiful ballad. Thanks for listening and sharing! Peace from SF
Very cool story on the concert and I agree 100% on the "So" album. I don't know if it was actually possible to wear out a CD back in the day, but I think I might have on this one.
Beautiful song written during great unemployment in the 80s. Kate Bush is a unique talent. Slightly off on a tangent the guy who just plastered my ceiling was a musician back in the day and worked with Kate Bush, he said how nice and unassuming she was.
This song always gives me chills and makes me cry. It's delivery. It's message. It's music melody. Just gets to me. Peter Gabriel gets to me. Kate Bush gets to me!!!! Hahaha....lol....hahaha...

Let me tell you, mate, Kate is not at all photogenic. I know her a bit and when you see her in the flesh you realise that although she looks good in pictures and videos in real life she is heart-stoppingly beautiful!
Everyone loves Kate. She's one of the most beautiful, charming, humble, gracious, and kind persons in this world (not to mention her genius level talent).

This relates to the 80’s in the UK when thousands of men were put out of work and had to move to find work. His wife is telling him to not give up and keep looking ‘ you’re not the only one’. Absolute classic beautifully sung and VERY true to the times back then.
It's one of my favorite Songs from him. After that I started to listen Kate Bush. My mom want's to be play "don't give Up" at her funeral, when the day would come.
Try her song “This Woman’s Work”, both the original and re-recorded version with a more mature voice (and perhaps insight?) His discography is so varied and amazing.
This song was specifically aimed at people out of work and feeling like there was no hope of finding work at a time time of high unemployment. The line - For every job, so many men, so many men no-one needs
I almost gave up this year when my dear mother passed away, if it wasn't for my brother i wouldn't be here now. This track is both heart-wenching and hopeful. Thanks jay.👍
Hi Brother, you''ve choose an absolute CLASSIC here! The song is about the VERY high UK unemployment of the Eighties and the despair and anguish it caused.
The song was _inspired_ by the US Depression, in particular the photographs of Dorothea Lange. It had particular resonance when released as Britain was experiencing high unemployment in the restructuring of the post-industrial economy. So yes and no as to the underlying meaning; the disruptive effects on people and relationships was certainly relevant to the times but the direct inspiration was drawn from a different period.
Two of the most original and greatest british singers of all time. They both also have so much integrity and create their own music from scratch. They never follwed trends just stuck to their own thing. They are the pioneers in music that others follow.
Thank you Jay for playing this song. My all time favorite since the 80s. The message is so important. My favorite part is when Kate Bush comes in with the words "rest your head... you worry too much..." she comes in with this part at the peak of the eclipse. The eclipse adds that extra dramatic effect. I love that part. It's a if she says it directly to us telling us we worry too much. Which is so true. Don't give up... I love this song and happy you reacted to it.
This is a hug in song form. I always love how they end on an up note not only musically but visually as well, they got through the dark night to the sunrise.
Its one of the most beautiful songs ever made ❤ It gives you an incredible longing after something or someone thats missing in your life - something indescribable... his rusty voice makes you get goosebumps all over. Every Word he sings, hits you like a hammer, deep in your heart ❤ ....And the fantastic voice of Kate - voice of an Angel ⚘
Pure magic, from two mega talents. Always listened too Peter Gabriel from his day one. And Kate can’t really do any wrong. I thought you would love this song Jovaughn.
This is such an emotional performance. It's simplistic in such a beautiful way...not a whole lot of extras, just these two incredible artists pouring their hearts out in song ❤️
Everyone needs someone to tell them it will be alright at some stage of their lives. This song got me through some tough times in my twenties. (Yep, I'm a boomer). I love that it's still being heard now. Great reaction.
Can't believe I'm tearing up!! Hard week emotionally and this is such a GEM of a song to hear. This came out when Britain was facing the worst unemployment numbers in the 80's. I read somewhere that Peter Gabriel LOVED doing this video spending all day in Kate's arms as they were taping this LOL!!!!!
The ability to feel music the way you do, down to your very inner core, is in itself a gift. Keep up the good work and keep listening outside the radio box!
Peter writes songs that are so thoughtful and relevant. One of my favorites. Mercy Street is another haunting piece, might be my favorite Peter Gabriel song.
Just this time i realized that there is a sun eclipse in the background, it's covers the sun at the most depressing point of the song and then goes back to full sunlight again when the song ends.
EXCELLENT CHOICE! One of my favorite songs in the world! Some day, try Gabriel's "Here Comes the Flood." :) And, YES, Jay--you are such a bright spot in very dreary times. You help us connect to the best parts in ourselves.
This song has become an anthem for guys separated from their wives during jail time but it was written about high levels of unemployment in the UK. Peter Gabriel has stated in interviews that he didn't have guys doing jail time thinking about their wives in mind when he wrote it. His ex-wife stated at the time the song was released that the video upset her because she and Peter were getting divorced at the time too. There's always been speculation when people saw all that hugging that Peter and Kate were more than good friends.
Wow, this really got me, Kate Bush’s heart moving voice, it was like it was the first time I really experienced the song (it came out when I was 15/16). It moved me to tears, I really felt Kate’s voice in my heart. Thank you Jay for being such an open hearted, open minded listener! You really love music, every kind of music and your appreciation for musical expression really comes across in your videos. Keep going (Don’t Give Up!!!) 😄
I just watched your reactions on Don't Give Up and Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. I think the music going through you is like going through a 'Pure Filter'. You don't know the timeline of the Beatles members or how an orchestra works, but your reactions are as pure as when I first heard those music and you have the talent to speak out, to give words to your experience. And that makes that music all new for me again. Thanks!
I'm so glad you finally got to listen to it. I don't know if you saw my tweet about it but this song is just so wonderful. It always makes me hopeful and I I'm happy you have it for when you need it as well. The video makes you feel that hug.
Peter and Kate have been great friends since the late 1970's and it was Peter that introduced Kate to the Fairlight computer syntheseizer that helped change her music so much from 1980 onwards. Apart from being close friends, they also had great admiration for each others musical direction and individuality and it's no accident they released 2 of the best and biggest albums of the 80's with 'So' and the 'Hounds of love'. Kate truly is a genius!
Wonderful song and performance by two people at the top of their game. And what a bass line. Great reaction too. Throughout the video I love the eclipse that's going on behind them.
Beautiful song about "hope, despair and love" .love both these artists. peter gabriels "whiskey baritone" and kate bush 4 octave resonant gorgeous vocal, they could of sung the phone book and sounded great, cool reaction jayvee ; )
The entire album SO is a masterpiece. This song got me through many depressed times of my life. I loved your goosebumps and your reaction. Try Mercy Street. Also Lamb Lies Down On Broadway from his Genesis days. Well done by him or Phil Collins.
My all time favourite album from Peter Gabriel - So.... used to listen to this album everyday.. love all the songs in this album.. but Dont Give Up is the most special one. It reminds me of 1987 while I was studying in the USA (saphomore year and a foreign student) away from my family and country. Sometimes u just felt like giving up studying at the time.. and this song hit me so deeply...Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush voices compliment each other and the lyrics is so inspiring..
If the world ever needed a proper hug...its THIS one.

This was the era I grew up in and was very relevant to my family. This song is everything to me.
Nothing to do wirh England whatsoever. Was about the great depression in America.

So beautiful. Everything about this is epic.
Thank you Jay, needed that tonight, Angel blessings to everyone XxX
✌️☺️
This is a masterpiece! Always brings tears to my eyes because of the perfect voices. They don´t make music like this no more and what a perfect video.
Two of the most original and greatest british singers of all time. They both also have so much integrity and create their own music from scratch. They never follwed trends just stuck to their own thing. They are the pioneers in music that others follow.
A GREAT song from two of the most original and iconic artists we've ever had the honor of hearing.
No matter how many times I hear this song, it brings me to tears....the emotions run high.
Peter’s voice is beautiful. So warm and full of emotion. It sends shivers down my spine.
Its one of the most beautiful songs ever made ❤
It gives you an incredible longing after something or someone thats missing in your life - something indescribable...
his rusty voice makes you get goosebumps all over.
Every Word he sings, hits you like a hammer, deep in your heart ❤
....And the fantastic voice of Kate - voice of an Angel ⚘
LOVE THIS ..tears in my eyes
always makes me tear up ...the emotion in the singing at times kills me
What a magical duet. I absolutely love this song. It always give me chills but also gives me hope whenever I'm feeling down.
Such a beautiful song, and still relevant in these times. Their voices complement each other so well. We all need friends like this
Such a beautiful song. Their voices work so well together. One of the all-time best duets.
Two of the best voices in history. Boy do I miss hugs!
What a great balance of voices.. he is a great story teller.. and her crystalline echoes just vibrate with passion . A great combo!
One of my favorite songs!
This is about how it is to Hove no work, no hope on the verge of being defeated, and how the love of someone can carry them through anything.
I love this song.
I have been looking at the trees burnt to the ground. It’s hard to believe sometimes there’s a place where we belong.
Peter gabriel saved my life on more than one occasion. My favourite artist of all time
Just this time i realized that there is a sun eclipse in the background, it's covers the sun at the most depressing point of the song and then goes back to full sunlight again when the song ends.
EXCELLENT CHOICE! One of my favorite songs in the world! Some day, try Gabriel's "Here Comes the Flood." :) And, YES, Jay--you are such a bright spot in very dreary times. You help us connect to the best parts in ourselves.
I just teared up watching your reaction. This song is one of a kind.
One of the best songs. They really take U to church, it's very powerful.
One of my favourite songs and this is my favourite video of yours. Giving everyone out there a virtual Peter Gabriel/Kate Bush style hug.
The background behind them is a real solar eclipse.
I had a dream about a solar eclipse today. Sorry a bit random, you just reminded me.
Keep going (Don’t Give Up!!!) 😄
Take me to church, Peter and Kate!!!! So powerful!
I agree , Peter Gabriel's voice gives me goosebumps and together their voices are haunting ❤
Thanks!
They are 2 of the most talented musicians Britain has produced, and for some reason we've produced a lot. I love both these artists.
Again just love jayvee 's reaction!!
Love your reactions! Peter has a unique voice :) one song from him that always gets me emotional is "I grieve", it's just an experience
I had exactly your reaction when I first heard this song.
Definitely a haunting song. Beautiful!
Beautiful song about "hope, despair and love" .love both these artists. peter gabriels "whiskey baritone" and kate bush 4 octave resonant gorgeous vocal, they could of sung the phone book and sounded great, cool reaction jayvee ; )
Will always be one of my all-time favorites. And yeah their voices are both incredible on this one. Peter Gabriel’s voice is insane.
The hug of the millennium. We could all do with a hug like that this year
The entire album SO is a masterpiece. This song got me through many depressed times of my life. I loved your goosebumps and your reaction. Try Mercy Street. Also Lamb Lies Down On Broadway from his Genesis days. Well done by him or Phil Collins.
Oh my goodness the Lamb is totally magnificent, heard that when I was 12, utter magic, I love his Genesis stuff too.
Sometimes just a smile and some positive energy can help people feel better.
Best hug in the history of the world.
the use of the eclipse in the background is subtle and such a nice metaphor.
A song that not only now but can always be so meaningful to so many.... .Don't give up!!!!! 💞💞💞
