6:50 I recently swapped from using a GameCube controller to a Pro controller, and I thought I was going insane for thinking gliding felt more stiff on the Pro. It all makes sense now!
I have a wired pro controller that doesn't have a gyro sensor and can do motion glider much more easily. However, being a more competitive player, I find soft drifting much more difficult. I find holding the stick at a 45-degree angle when drifting causes you to turn much tighter due to the doubled handling on the ground. In order to charge mini turbos quicker and play better on the ground, it's definitely better to still only use motion controls in the air. Edit: Now when playing online, I was able to find a clawing technique that allows me to use it anytime without having to switch my whole right hand to the other side during a glider.
@wetnoodle5471 replying 2 months later lol. I usually do this when I go to play online but during time trials I reset my switch so there's stacked inputs. But when playing online I use a clawing technique which has my right ring finger on the drift/hop button and index on the d pad
"You can use the right control stick to accelarate and reverse. This one isn't just seemingly useless, it's actually useless." My Gran Turismo muscle memory says otherwise.
It seems like *Shortcat* has also made a similar video about this tech as well, I'm just glad more people are able to learn about this technique though
I use an 8BitDo controller, which has configurable inputs and stuff. I’ll test it out later and update the comment, but I think I might be able to turn off motion sensing and have the right stick set to the D-pad. Nice work.
@@aeit999 yup that was my downfall. Gonna reach out and ask for options to 1) map right stick to D-pad (only left stick rn can do that) and 2) turn off motion sensing
Wow ! What an amazing video. I have over 2000 hours played in mk8d but i've never heard of this tech. Always heard of the motion glider but not hyper glider. Thank you very much
I'll never be good enough to do this consistently. Even before this video existed I was well aware that the best ghosts i've seen in time trials contort their gliding position in such a way that alows them to gain more speed
You dont need motion controls turned on. Idk if its any different for a pro controller, but if youre on regular joycons you can do the double input with motion controls off
Don't know if anyone else had problems, but the "fix" did not work for me when I tried it with a single joy con. Once I did the same with a Pro Controller it was working perfectly
everyone always mentions that having motion controls always on is annoying, but never explains why. i just keep my controller flat on the desk and i don’t notice any disadvantages
From what I've experienced, having motion controls without the gyro sensor is actually better for drifts also. I noticed that doing normal left and right inputs more softly (no angles) is actually just as effective at charging MTs as hard inputs and softdrifting, my best guess is because of this 6:50. It also feels more consistent to drift this way than softdrfting because you won't have to worry about getting the proper angles all the time. I call it "fine-drifting"
I’m surprised by the 5K view count. This video is really well edited to show the intricacies of the move like controller inputs and stuff. I don’t even own MK8DX lol.
I saw this vid just randomly and it's flawless. And I suddnly notice that this channel has tiny amount of subs considering the quality. ....what? this is never happend to me before
Heh, I have a usb switch controller that does not have a gyroscope, so I don't need a gamecube adapter... even though I already have one (although it's connected to my family's tv computer for playing on dolphin, and it's not in a place where I can easily take it out and connect it to my switch).
Motion glider was found in late 2019, and the ability to use D-Pad instead of tilting the controller was found in late 2020, It only applies to Deluxe, not the original Wii U release. So really we were only like 2.5 to 3.5 years late all things considered
This was really informative and well made, thanks for the explanations! Not sure it's worth switching to a Gamecube controller since I find it quite uncomfortable for this game, but it's cool to see alternatives to motion popping up.
The octagonal gate around the GameCube controller's joystick makes it extremely difficult to soft-drift, since the 45 degree notch is just outside the soft-drift range, and you're naturally inclined to go at that angle due to the notches. Other than that, it personally just feels clunky on Deluxe
@@jackyspearow You could, assuming they don't include a gyroscope in the controller. In which case, yes, you could just leave the motion setting on permanently without ever getting screwed over by gyro inputs

IDK why I never thought about leaving motion controls on with a controller that doesn't have motion controls, that's really funny lol. Does the thing where you just randomly lose dragged items happen on other controllers too or just cube controllers? I always have felt like the analog-ness of it might be registering that I've let go of the trigger even when I'm holding it down.
@@takumifujiwara2674 Nah, D-Pad just overrides motion controls, so you're best off sticking with motion + stick or just D-Pad + stick, unless you're feeling adventurous, but it won't help any extra lol
Actually no, surprisingly there isn't. Once your glider is fully deployed, you can literally let go of A (or Y, or up on the right-stick if you're a menace to society). You're free to glide with holding any form of accel. Just note that you may wanna start holding it before you land, otherwise when you do land, you'll come to a halt very quickly
