- Jorge Luis Gonzalez knocks down Riddick Bowe in the Pan American Games in August 1987. Gonzalez gaining four knockdowns on Bowe and won an unanimous decision victory and an eventual Gold Medal. He beat Lennox Lewis on points in the final.
Gonzalez could not do that to Bowe as a pro.
He turned pro a bit too late, didnt adapt well and refused to listen to trainers. Blame the Cuban government.
Robinson Ray Yea, that's a good point. After many years of communism, he probably finally felt free to think and do things freely.
Sand_Deep_Fighter Cubans are not allowed to turn pro, it is illegal in Cuba.
By ''blame the Cuban government'', i mean the Cuban government literally did not let him turn pro. Not figuratively, but literally; they didnt let him do it.
@@robinsonray6766 the heavier weight cuban fighters seemed to indulge in excess after coming to America and hurt their careers, probably as a result of being deprived their whole lives.
@@LM_357 supposedly Cuba is allowing their boxers to turn pro. The issue is I think they will only let them compete in Cuba. Otherwise id imagine many would defect
