Running a 2 stroke engine on nitromethane rc car fuel!

  • Here I run my little leaf blower engine on nitromethane rc car fuel! The results are scary! I am not sure what the flywheel is rated for rpm wise. I am confident I exceeded its limit! DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME AN EXPODING FLYWHEEL CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR POSSIBLY DEATH. With that being said I think this engine reached well around 15-18k rpms. I need to get a tachometer and actually measure the free rpms. What did we learn today? Nitro instantly wants to eat the carbs internals alive. This carb cannot supply enough fuel for it to become stable. Returning to an idle was tricky, the engine just wanted to keep revving. Next we try E85 and see what happens! Thanks for hanging out! Please, like and subscribe, it would be helpful for my channel to grow. I have other projects that I am in the process of filming and editing! Thanks for hanging out!

    Did a similar experiment a while ago, pure methanol and Castor oil. drilled out the main jet to about 2x the original cross section area. Got it running pretty good, but was a tad rich. I had to cut the amount of oil in the fuel way back as it fouled the spark plug. The Nitro fuel has a lot of oil as the engines that run on it have glow plug that is more robust and no rings and the oil helps to seal and generate compression.

    I fly rc airplanes. I used to fly with 15% nitro. Great power out of a .40cc engine. The engines run best with a cooler glow plug and pretty wet with the fuel settings. My two stroke airplanes would hit right around 10,500 rpm at wide open throttle and idle around 1,200. Very fun hobby. Nitro fuel creates a pretty violent explosion in engine cylinders so that is why your engine revved to outer space and seemed unstable while idling. Take a look at top fuel funny cars. Nitro methanol at its finest . Quarter mile in 4.5 seconds with six foot flames out of the headers.

    I've ran a few 4 stroke weed eater engines on RC car & buggy 30% Nitro from VP. Have done Ryobi, Craftsman, and Homelite. All were purchased out of a small engine pile at a local recycling facility for about $2.00 each. End up buying 2 engines to get 1 running engine most of the time, seems like 50% of them will have catastrophic engine problems but good carburetor and pull starter, and the other 50% will have a junk carburetor and screwed up pull starter but the engines internals will be okay. From my experience running RC car nitro fuel for glow plug 2 strokes in a 4 stroke weed eater engine, how long the engine lasts depends on the person operating it because there are a few quirks that can destroy the engine quickly if you don't make allowances for them.
    1. When running Nitromethane at 30% the engine needs about 3× the amount of Nitromethane than the amount of gasoline it would normally require, make sure your fuel system is up to the task. Strongly suggest putting a fuel system that allows you to pressurize the tank with about 2-3 psi. DO NOT PRESSURIZE IT WITH THE STANDARD NITRO RC CAR METHOD OF EXHAUST FITTING/HOSE/TANK FITTING. 4 stroke exhaust is much hotter and prone to flames and backfiring that 2 stroke and will set your crap on fire.
    2. Even though 4 stroke exhaust is hotter than 2 stroke exhaust, and 4 stroke engine operating temperature is hotter than 2 strokes, running on Nitromethane will make your 4 stroke run colder than it did on gasoline and it will probably need a hotter burning sparkplug to avoid fowling especially if you're using the higher oil content RC fuel.
    3. Don't run stock weed eater exhaust as it will end up holding some raw fuel in it that will end up catching on fire. I make mine out of stainless steel tubing, usually just a simple bend in the direction I need it to point in and no baffles. Play with length and diameter, you can really dial in the engines torque curve by exhaust tuning.
    4. Change oil frequently, Nitromethane will turn crankcase oil to a yellowish nasty goop after a few minutes so change it everything you finish running it.

      It's the alcohol in the fuel evaporating in the intake manifold that cools (sometimes freezes) the engine. Fun fact.

    Get a bigger carb from an engine about 3 times the displacement. It'll run, but don't bother until you replace the gaskets/pump diaphragm with silicone or teflon. Your instincts were right: methanol and nitro will EAT stuff rated for regular gas...that fuel line will dissolve, too. Fun seeing the kind of power you can make though, huh? :o) Oh, and I'm not sure how cold it is where you live, but it's HARD to get e85 to run in the winter, at least here. I ran my leaf blower on it as a test and I had to dump 30% car fuel straight down the carb to get it to start.

    • @aaronpratt89

      I’m surprised the carb lasted as long as it did. It’s actually still alive. I mainly did these videos to show people what would happen if you did such a thing. The engine isn’t going to be mounted on anything besides my work bench so there is no need to make it run perfect. I was sure to run some premix through the engine after each test run of nitro and alcohol. Next I’m going to revisit the diesel and heat it with a torch to see if it will run without the use of ether. Thanks for the interest in my videos!

    I have done this multiple times and the stock diaphragm type carbs physically wont work, they just cant supply enough fuel and they will overheat the tip of the spark plug and the engine will run away, I had one that the kill switch wouldn't shut it off and it kept running even with the plug wire off lol. I did have great success though with a troy built weedeater that I siliconed the pulse port shut in the intake and I found a traxxas 2.5 carb fit right into the intake hole and ran silicone fuel lines and that thing ran absolutely amazing, it was a bit lean at full throttle but it was fully functional and made good power, I have been thinking about trying it again but on one of my gopeds.

      I would love to run a Goped on one. But yea these little carbs can not supply enough fuel for these engines to run right on nitro lol. I was thinking of trying an alcohol carb. But for testing purposes this one worked ok lol. Tanks for the input!!

    • @briang4470
      @briang4470 3 роки тому +2

      @@aaronpratt89 the alcohol type carbs for these engines still cant supply enough fuel, to use one you would have to have a restrictor plate over the carb to make it run even remotely right, the biggest problem with nitro fuel is that nitro methane is an oxygenizer meaning it carries it's own oxygen molecules so you need the massive jetting of a large carb but you need the airflow of a small carb because you dont need air, you just need a way to get lots of fuel. That's why I used a traxxas 2.5 carb because it had fairly large fuel passages but small air passage. If I were to do it again I would use the same traxxas 2.5 carb but then add a "power jet" to get the little extra fuel I would need and a power jet if you didn't know is just an extra adjustable passage you drill and press into the outside of the carb inlet, guys use that trick on motorcycle carbs with great success.

      @@briang4470 that makes sense to me. I’ve built a few nitro 4 strokes. An the 300% more fuel was always a challenge. This video was strictly for entertainment purposes. But a tiny carb like for a small bore motor wild be perfect! I understand what you are saying and for a rideable two stroke application, I would need a custom carb setup. I have the ability to make a manifold for a slide carb with changeable jets to make this work! With your input and advise, I’m gonna make it work! Thank you for the added knowledge!!

    • @briang4470
      @briang4470 3 роки тому +2

      @@aaronpratt89 no problem, as crazy as this sounds you will probally be able to remove the main jet entirely and still be right on the edge of not enough fuel, if you look on here there is a guy that tried to run his moped 50cc on rc nitro fuel and he tried to run I think a 32mm carb and even with the jet removed entirely it was still too lean and would melt the spark plugs lol. If I was you I would pick a large 20-28mm carb and then make a restrictor plate to reduce the air flow in and see what that gets you. Also plugging the air bleeds in the front of the carb help richen it up since the fuel will not atomize as good but with nitro fuel you dont need good atomization you just need a insane volume of fuel. Trying to carburate a nitro engine is difficult but it can be done, but it's just hard to get a carb to move so much fuel and that's why actual nitro race cars use mechanical fuel injection. Hopefully you will get a functional set up and post some videos I would be interested to watch.

    Nitro methane is made by mixing propane and Nitric acid at around 800 degrees Fahrenheit. So that explains why every bit of rubber and paper went south for the winter. Nitric acid will dissolve solid gold, your gaskets and such had no chance. Run the thing off of chocolate syrup and I will be impressed.
