In Europe, there was the SEGA Ages Vol. 1 collection. It's fairly affordable. The disc included After Burner II, Out Run, and Space Harrier. I guess SEGA knew they'd have a hard job selling them as stand alone games over here.
Missiles can be dodged by moving from one corner of the screen to the other, just after the missiles are fired. It seems the missiles don't lock on its target, but rather on your position in the game screen. Such is the case with 90% of arcade shooters from that era. :-)
2 years ago i thought old games are shit, but now i have 4 retro consoles with lots of games, you and AVGN inspired me to collect, retro games rule, new games drule :)
Bahahaha, Radiant Silvergun. Luckily, that's coming out on XBLA in 2011, much to the chagrin of collectors. I can't wait to see your review of THAT, specifically. Keep up the good work, Mark!
The game you are looking for, as far as an american copy of Afterburner II goes would be Sega Ages for the Saturn. In Japan, several arcade classics were released for the Saturn, and when brought here, they combined Outrun, Space Harrier and After Burner II into one game and released it as the Sega Ages collection. It can be found in both the states and Europe, and cost about as much as buying one of these games from Japan.
AfterBurner II can be found on USA Saturn release " Sega Ages" which gives you 3 games: Afterburner II, Outrun, Space Harrier. All arcade perfect ports. The 32X version is nice because its on a cart which means no load times. Sound is clear on the 32X as well. Search eBay for Saturn Sega Ages and you will find USA prints starting at $40. Knowing you get 3 games makes the price easier to swallow.
The reviewer points out the Saturn version is hard to control with the Saturn D-pad. This is in part due to the game being designed for the 3D controller & the flight-stick. With either analog controller, the game plays great. After Burner on 32X only supports the standard digital controller of course so the Saturn gets points if you have a Saturn analog controller.
I did Research about these ports when I got my Japanese copy of Outrun Arcade. They indeed are straight Arcade ports emulated on the Saturn, and official. They were released in North America/Europe in a 'Sega Ages' pack, and individually in the 'Sega Ages' series in Japan. The Japanese versions (at least Outrun) included remixes of the original Music - which are badass. Also, in Outrun at least, theres a button combo you can press that unlocks 60fps gameplay. I bought my Saturn for that alone.
The Saturn version of Afterburner II should include support for analog control, but I can't remember if that means the 3D control pad, or only the analog control stick. In any case, it should be easier to fly with analog instead of the d-pad (which isn't that bad).
I would love to have this. Ever since I got the Tengen Afterburner for the NES and AB2 for the Genesis, I am becoming addicted to this game. I wish there was an unlicensed SNES port that used Mode 7 graphics. If I ever learn how to homebrew stuff, I will try that.
Hiya. This is available in europe as part of the Sega Ages Volume 1. pack. Controversially, there were no other Sega Ages packs released, but other games on this pack are Outun and Space Harrier. It'll cost about £8 on ebay, and its an essential Sega Saturn purchase in my humble opinion. Afterburner 2 is very very hard, but if you give it enough time the difficulty is perfect for an experienced player. I'm addicted
This is the original Arcade-Version of After Burner II from 1987. It is 1:1 portet to the Saturn. The easyest way to get this game ist to buy Shenmue II and go into Phoenix Building in Kowloon.
This was released in the US by Working Designs as part of Sega Ages. No need to buy bootleg copies. From what I've read, it has analog controller support.
The only way you could get this in the USA was on the Sega Ages collection for the Saturn. You could buy it individually, but it would be import only. Other Sega classics got the same treatment, but they were only sold in Japan as well.
@Swordmangoof Its actually saying 'fire', it happens every time the cross fire locks on to an enemy. This is the point the player shoots his homing missile.
this was released in euope or at least in the UK in a tripple pack, sega ages vol 1, Afterburner II, Outrun, Space Harrier II, i got mine for free :) Awesomeness! and yes i know this video is old!
Afterburner is excellent, this version looks very impressive, and Afterburner Climax is great as well! Amazingly they've actually got the Afterburner Climax arcade machine in my area which is incredible because the arcade here is pathetic, not really an arcade at all. Why I had to write this? I don't know.
If I remember correctly this game is compatible with the Saturn Mission Stick, you might want to give it a try with that and see if the controls are better.
As I remember this game was released in Europe for Sega Saturn bundled with Space Harrier and OutRun all in one disc but I'm not sure if they were arcade ports or sega mega drive ports.
This game looks good. I have only seen an arcade cab of this game once and that was back in early 2000's.The game is featured in Terminator 2 Judgment Day.The Genesis version of the game is too slow of game play. There is also an NES port of this game. I did not see a new After burner game for next gen consoles when searching online.
If you want to play 3 great arcade Sega conversions on the Saturn including After Burner 2, just get Sega Ages Vol. 1. I prefer the Japanese version of Sega Ages Vol. 1 because of how much cheaper it is then the American version on Amazon (although you'll need an Action Replay card to play it on an NTSC, or North American system.)
I bought the North American version, figures I didn't know there was a Japanese version of that compliation. I thought they just released those games individually in Japan.
@MrGish1 Lando, as in Lando Calrissian of Star Wars. Anything Lando is/was/does/slaps his meat n' veg for, can be considered "Lando". ie, a rogue for playing an unlicenced copy of After Burner 2 or a pimp for whoring out cloud city.
Yeah, this looks just like the 32X version, released in America and is pretty easy to find... and they call it After Burner: Complete, but it's exactly like II.
I thought this version of Afterburner 2 was a direct port made by Sega. I mean, I think it's part of the Sega Ages Collection, therefore it should be an official version.
Sega Ages was brought to the US Saturn, thanks to Working Designs. The disc includes After Burner II, Outrun, and Space Harrier. It's nice to have several games at once, as the Japanese Sega Ages discs feature only a single game per disc.
The only problem I have with the ads is when they rebuffer and take longer to load than they need to. >:\ Also: portable devices (example iphone) = no ads... until maybe later in the future cuz I just opened my big mouth. XDD
In the japanese versio of this game i think this game had a special gamepad. i dont know if it was released in the US. i think its called a 3D controller
All of the games you mentioned were also playable in Shenmue on the Dreamcast, except Hang-on,which was included in Shenmue 2.Where is SHENMUE 3 SEGA???
actually outrun is not arcade perfect at all. It doesnt have the ferarri car, and the graphics are not the same, also the billboards are different. It also contains a few glitches not present in the sega saturn version (which is by far the best version). Also im pretty sure this version of afterburner is considered the best.
After Burner II + the Saturn mission flight stick = Godly
I absolutely need the Mission Flight Stick!
I always loved the music in these games. I'm glad the recent PS3 and 360 versions let you play with the original soundtracks. =-)
In Europe, there was the SEGA Ages Vol. 1 collection. It's fairly affordable. The disc included After Burner II, Out Run, and Space Harrier. I guess SEGA knew they'd have a hard job selling them as stand alone games over here.
Fire Fire Fire, reminds me of that AVGN video with the head set accessory
Dude. Why not donate to this guy? He's one of the best youtube reviewers.
Afterburner was my favorite arcade game as a kid. it was also one of the first games I ever played in my entire life.
'Unofficial' version? Is your Saturn Modded then Mark?
Missiles can be dodged by moving from one corner of the screen to the other, just after the missiles are fired. It seems the missiles don't lock on its target, but rather on your position in the game screen. Such is the case with 90% of arcade shooters from that era. :-)

Unbelievable that this still lookes so good
I really like the 32X version of Afterburner II!
That's a great version of the game too. I have that version as well. It's as close as you're gonna get to an arcade perfect port on a cartridge.
This game is beautiful with the SEGA Saturn Mission Stick.
The reviewer points out the Saturn version is hard to control with the Saturn D-pad.

Those bitmap graphics looks great! Much better than 3D from that era like Ace Combat.
Music at 03:00 kicks butt and makes a great ring tone!
Hiya. This is available in europe as part of the Sega Ages Volume 1. pack. Controversially, there were no other Sega Ages packs released, but other games on this pack are Outun and Space Harrier. The explosions are awesome
i cant wait for this to come out on the 3DS, it's gonna look nuts, especially with that new 3DS with better 3D
Can be found in Europe on the Sega ages compilation which is ace. Also very common!
This did get a U.S. release on the Sega Ages disc, and there is a Sega Saturn mission stick that you can use with this game.
This is the original Arcade-Version of After Burner II from 1987. It is 1:1 portet to the Saturn.
The easyest way to get this game ist to buy Shenmue II and go into Phoenix Building in Kowloon.
I have After Burner on NES. Which is pretty fun. Never could find the one on Saturn. I'll have to checkout EBAY.
This was released in the US by Working Designs as part of Sega Ages. No need to buy bootleg copies. From what I've read, it has analog controller support.
Ad-blocker, buddy... they work like a charm.
OMG I used to play the first one on my Gameboy Advanced when I was a kid xD
"unofficial version" lol, although it's good to see the Saturn can play cdr games without problems.
The only way you could get this in the USA was on the Sega Ages collection for the Saturn. You could buy it individually, but it would be import only. Other Sega classics got the same treatment, but they were only sold in Japan as well.
fucking hell, that game looks awesome X) surprisingly, heck, old FPSes havent aged that well
@Swordmangoof Its actually saying 'fire', it happens every time the cross fire locks on to an enemy. This is the point the player shoots his homing missile.
2:50 That music is also heard in Bayonetta as an easter egg.
this was released in euope or at least in the UK in a tripple pack, sega ages vol 1, Afterburner II, Outrun, Space Harrier II, i got mine for free :) Awesomeness! and yes i know this video is old!
it received a North America release on the Sega Ages with 3 games on one disc you can find it as Sega Ages Sega Saturn on ebay.
HAHA, this game is AWESOME!!! I used to play it on Sega genesis! :D
OH SNAP HE TOTALLY BLEW UP!!!!! 1:58
@BillyCauseyjr
Working Designs published Sega Ages Volume 1 in the USA, comprising OutRun, Space Harrier, and After Burner 2 in one disc.
Afterburner is excellent, this version looks very impressive, and Afterburner Climax is great as well! Amazingly they've actually got the Afterburner Climax arcade machine in my area which is incredible because the arcade here is pathetic, not really an arcade at all. Why I had to write this? I don't know.
DAMN THAT IS A FINE LOOKING GAME
DEM GRAPHICS MAN
Sounds like you need the Saturn Mission Stick, Mark.
This should be made available on GameRoom. I fact, SEGA shold make all their classic arcade games available on GameRoom.
If I remember correctly this game is compatible with the Saturn Mission Stick, you might want to give it a try with that and see if the controls are better.
It was released both in Europe and the U.S on a disc called Sega Ages which includes After Burner II, Outrun and Space Harrier.
Sega Ages release by Working Designs = After Burner II + Outrun + Space Harrier = $$$
The key to avoiding missiles is to constantly do barrel rolls.
after burner 2 did actually come to the us on the saturn by working designs it came on a disc with out run and space harrier.
Wow, i remember seeing the arcade machine when i was 7, i wanted to play it so badly
I liked this game on the Saturn.
Great!
I would play this with the Night Analogue stick. A lot better than the standard pad.
Awesome music!
yes. i do remember that arcade machine.
As I remember this game was released in Europe for Sega Saturn bundled with Space Harrier and OutRun all in one disc but I'm not sure if they were arcade ports or sega mega drive ports.

No it Fire! when you line up the box infront of the planes it saying you can fire a rocket at them to take them out.
pie is good. and this looks like a game that would be fun but give you motion sickness after awhile

@RottenRroses Yes! John Connor playing it.
@Swordmangoof
Pie...Pie...it's an American Pie
:P
5/5 Video rocked balls!!
I enjoyed the 32x version.
Great version of the original.
So he has a modded saturn? Interesting... Looks awesome, this also is on the 32X.
why no use the Sega Mission Stick?
@GeneratorNJ if they didn't have us watch ads we would have to pay monthly for youtube
@Swordmangoof Because the guy on the radio was telling him that is pie is ready.
@funky3ddy I could've swore that's what they were saying when the missles are coming at him.
@GeneratorNJ you're absolutely right. pressing f5 doesn't work for me anymore. :(
Yeah, this looks just like the 32X version, released in America and is pretty easy to find... and they call it After Burner: Complete, but it's exactly like II.
fire fire fire fire fire fire fire fire
"unofficial version" ha I like it
Damn... i got a flashpack when i reliesed that i have played this game when i was very little...
All it needs is a Kenny Loggins soundtrack!!
I thought this version of Afterburner 2 was a direct port made by Sega. I mean, I think it's part of the Sega Ages Collection, therefore it should be an official version.
I played this on Sega CD.
It was released in europe as sega ages package i had it after butner 2 outrun and space harrier
@GeneratorNJ Download add block plus!!!!!
i know sorry for spam about add block but seriously it's really helpfull!

Was the Afterburner II Arcade featured in Terminator 2?
hold on there is a new mexico?

In the japanese versio of this game i think this game had a special gamepad. i dont know if it was released in the US. i think its called a 3D controller
Awesome review Mark, loved it.
All of the games you mentioned were also playable in Shenmue on the Dreamcast, except Hang-on,which was included in Shenmue 2.Where is SHENMUE 3 SEGA???
@ToxinBlade
keep waiting
