  • In this video, we go over the procedure on how to deal with airplane energy if descend does not go as planned that late deseed.
I would like to thank mtrackerbeyond for the request to cover this topic and hopefully, the video might be of some help.
This is part 1 in which we are still following the programmed route and LNAV/VNAV are engaged.
The first thing you need to do is to slow down to the minimum safe speed, that will reduce the airplane energy.
When cleared to descend use LVL CHNG and increase the speed to the maximum you can. Keep in mind to make sure to look at the speed tape in order not to exceed Vmo/Mmo.
The vertical deviation scale is an excellent tool to use to gauge how far are you from the path and whether you are catching up to it or not.
When you open the speed window it might be in Mach no. depending on high are you so make sure to C/O (Changeover) to indicated airspeed.
Finally, whenever you use the speed brake deploy it slowly and retract it slowly that is for passenger comfort. and you don't have to go the FLIGHT DETENT every time you use it. To eliminate vibration go all the way to the maximum then retract it till the vibration is gone, again this is for passengers comfort.
Part 2 will cover the same issue but if you are on radar vectors.
If you have any other topics you would like me to cover please let me know.

Thanks for the video.. I have a question. If you decrease the speed because you passed the TOD and not descending, won't this be a problem for ATC with its traffic separation? Don't we need to request for speed reduction?

      Hello,
      You are absolutely right,
Yes ATC need to be advised if you are planning to do that.
Thank you for pointing that out 🙏🏼
      All the best,
      Abdul

Captain I want to contact you I have a lot of questions about the Boeing 737/800
Especially during descent and how I know if I can recover my path or I can’t(mental math)
    Thank you very much
