Oil pan gasket removal and installation: Jeep Grand Cherokee
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 чер 2016
- Here I replace an oil pan gasket on a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2L. It is a little bit involved, as you have to remove the exhaust and some steering components on the 5.2L before you can get the pan off. As some of my viewers have pointed out, you can do this job on the 4.0L without removing the exhaust and some of the other components. This definitely saves you a big headache. The oil pan removal is very similar on the 4L otherwise. Be sure to check out my video on removing the exhaust:

Great detailed install video man, well done! I like the guide bolt trick.
Thanks! Yeah, it's super helpful when the new gasket is flopping around while you wrestle the pan back in place. Guide bolts make sure gasket is in the right spot :)
high temp silicone with the bolts that go in it is just as easy. just saying. he wasted his time there making thoses.
I know I'm a few years too late, but this video and your rear main video were a life saver. Just did both and I don't think I would've been able to do it without these videos
Thanks for the info. I really like the tip on the homemade guide posts. Clever.
I was very concerned about the proper application of the RTV, your video showed me the proper area to treat!!Thanks
Just a followup, no leaks!!
Great video brother
This was a great video. Just checking this job is 700 dollars labor at the dealership. Just had it done at the dealership among many other things. Thanks for the video. I love the bolt idea for gasket placement! Thanks
1200 bucks from a ripp off shop lol. i did it and the timing chain in under 5 hours for free.
Great video as always! Very detailed. Liking the new end card you have at the end of your video too.
Thanks. I was happy with how it turned out.
Hey, that means you watch the whole video!
I always watch to the end on channels that I support. It is easy with Jeep Solid!
About to drop my pan on my limited 5.9. Great video !
+chain carillo Thanks!
Please please put year make model engine size & 2 or 4 x 4 in title. Each is SO different
I hope the dealership did as good a job as you did. I told them about a gasket set that comes with plastic holders much as your bolt idea. 1998 JGC 5.2L V8
Yeah, not too bad of a job, but the exhaust can be a bit of a nightmare. On these 5.2L its right in the way.
I like the "Mr. Rogers" intro. (Changing sweaters, lol)
Haha..!! I was waiting for someone to make this comment. I was thinking the same thing. Lol
BroncoSolid lol. That’s funny!!
Hey help I’m stuck in the middle of taking off the pan and I can’t take off my suspension how’d you do it
hi jeep solid I have myself a Jeep Grand Cherokee 2001 4.0 , I actually just did this Job mostly myself. I did not remove Exhaust, Trannylines, or Steering dampener. Only the Starter, I did however put Jeep on shop ramps. and then Jacked up even more the Passenger side and I was able to remove and reinstall with new gasket. PITA but I got it in myself. Nice video though man!!
Thanks for the comment. This video was on the 5.2L, which is set up different than the 4.0. It's a huge pain to remove the exhaust, but a must on the 5.2. Glad the video helped ya out!
I actually just updated the description of the video to indicate it's on the 5.2L. The job is very similar to the 4L otherwise. Thanks for the feedback.
I started this project on my 95 Cherokee with the 4.0. I bought the shop manual for $11. (Great buy!) It says you just have to drop the exhaust not remove it, remove the engine through bolts and raise the engine enough to remove the oil pan.
I thought about removing all of the steering and suspension parts like you did but wasn’t convinced it would give me enough clearance. I suppose I will follow the directions on the shop manual. Such a pain for what should be a simple repair.
Yes. Should be much easier than it is.
You can know by stud kits for the Jeep 4.0
To anyone doing this job with a 4x4 V8 (mine is the 5.9), do not do the mistake I made of driving it up on ramps first. The suspension must be unweighted to maximize the clearance between the axle and the oil pan. I also had a stud coming off the starter for the bottom bolt and I thought that would be in the way, but it was not once you twist it out at an angle. The pan will come out the back side. Also I disconnected the exhaust segment between the headers and the cat and took it completely off to leave room. I did not have to jack up the engine like the repair manual said, but I did disconnect the steering linkage. Good luck!
Did you have to remove the exhaust, the trackbar and the steering shock? nothing more?
What year is the jeep you working on
anybody know what size the guide bolts would be? tia
bolt loose leak how to replace that bad bolt sir ?
Do you have a video of you removing the exhaust? Mine is more of a problem than I expected.
It's kinda a bear. I don't have a specific exhaust video, but I did remove it to do my transfer case swap on this vehicle. I covered some of it. It was a pain.
Do you need to remove the engine pipe from the cat. or is letting it hang sufficient? I have a 96 5.2 and the pan has developed a small weep due to Northern rust so I was thinking of replacing the pan, a shop wants 600.00 with new pan, etc but I can get a new pan and gasket for about 100.00 .. However my exhaust studs look a bit 'iffy' and might need some heat to break them free??? I just don't want to open a can of worms for a simple drop less than a rear main seal leakage problem--
+jim dandy we loosens ours just enough to get exhaust out of the way. Was a pain.
DId I miss the part with the oil pump? Was curious what your torque specs were.
I found it easier to remove the pump after the pan was loosen, but before the pan was taken off. While assembly, put the pan up above the suspension, then putting the pump in.
I also found it easier to do the exhaust assembly before putting the oil filter on.
by the way your not supposed to use any rtv sealant at all or it will leak with this exact gasket. did yours leak?
Nope. No leak at all. Service manual recommends using a bit on the edges where the seams of the engine are.
Is this similar to an 07 grand Cherokee? I’m having to change the oil pan on it.
he wont reply because he dont wana say how hard it is to put it back on. without bending up the back of the oil pan hahaha. with bad shocks or disconnects shocks its very easy to put back on. now you know :) your wellcome sir
I don't see why you need guide posts with the bolt head cut off could just use the original bolts...
well ill be.
. I thought there was more exhaust /suspension/steering components in the way of oilpan being completely removed ( I have to do this on my '95 after over 387,000 original miles!) on this particular year. If it truly is a matter of just frame jack-standing +a trackbar and SS removal, that makes it much less daunting! thanks.....
387,000 miles! Wow! That's cool. Be sure to check out the video on removing exhaust. It's a pain, but not impossible. The manifold bolts were the hardest part. Good luck, let us know how your progress is going!
thanks. I may just sawzall it off and cram a suitable stainless dynomax or magnaflow exhaust. We shall see.

Cool Cherokee. Thanks for sharing!

You don't need to cut down bolts as guides. You can simply buy long set screws that have the same thread.
That'll work. Thx
I bought a 12" threaded rod from Home Depot to make mine. I made 6. It was less than $2.
@@cliffbernsen438 what size was the threaded rod? thanks in advance
@@mikeboston421 ohh I can't remember... Take one of your pan bolts with you to home depot and you will be able to find what the size and thread pitch is.
@@cliffbernsen438 thats why i'm asking so i dont have to make 2 trips......
You can get the pan off without removing exhaust by removing bottom bolt on starter and loosening the others
Love your videos. Food for thought...stop the background music? Please
Haha! Yeah, background music in some areas is nice. Getting better as to when to use it. Some of my older stuff I got a bit carried away. Some may be really bad... but it takes practice.. Ha. Check out some of my newer stuff. Let me know what you think.
Just remove all music
@@JeepSolid yes that music is 12 year old music. please toss it in the liberal garbage lol.
what about the sequence
yes he forgot to mention the pan come off easy but it dont wana go back on. you would think he forgot or just made the video click bait as i seen it.
Please put year engine size in title this is totally different than for my 2005 4.7 liter
Edit grand into the title
