Tons of tips in a short video.
I love how you guys not only sell your own sound packs but show us how to do it on our own too. Great tips
We don't like to keep the cards too close to the chest. In fact, we prefer to show you our hand haha we would suck at Poker!
Ha ha! I was recording some breathing yesterday and my stomach was grumbling. I was shocked at how many things you have to take into account just to record foley, besides the action itself! So very useful! Thanks guys!
This is Rob. Richard does all of the Foley and I am always surprised by how many things he records to get it sounded real.
Extremely useful tips on recording Foley! Well done guys! As usual..
Cheers David! Hope this helps
Awesome tips, thank you!
What about footsteps on CONCRETE?????
I learned much new great information today. Thank you guys :-)
No problem Vegard :D
Great info, thanks! Do you use a type of reverb or delay on the outside footsteps? Thanks
So glad NoFilmSchool shared your video, you deserve it! :)
We are too. V from NoFilmSchool who writes the articles has been a great supporter of the channel, she has really helped the channel grow.
sweet! great book, I've had it since 2012
Brilliant. I have all the right gear to do my own Sound Effects. Will snag the book and begin building my library.
Assuming 48k, WAV 24-Bit is the right format/settings?
Yeah 48k 24-bit will work great!
Amazing work!! What's the technique for Folly sounds when the character is off in the distance of the film? Any tips for handling variable distance... is it lower volume or moving the sound recorder far away? :))

I'm gonna go right into that recording booth and I am gonna shit my pants
Great video thank you, very informative! You don't happen to have a library of footsteps I could borrow/use do you? Help a guy out? I am making a Star Wars fan audio drama and my biggest issue is my footsteps just not sounding right at all.
Sure do! www.thefilmlook.com/store/footsteps-sound-pack-mega-bundle
@@TheFilmLook I bought it, $15 is not bad, hoping I can get some use out of it. Thank you.
Hi, I looked at the pavement footsteps pack and the walking was quite fast. Are there different walk speeds, or who would they sound Ok slowed down on Powerdirector?
We have recorded each surface with light, standard, and heavy footed steps. There is a lot of space between each step, so the idea is that you can cut and place in each step. I would suggest using the light steps on pavement, that way you can space them out and they won't sound too thumpy.
How would you check the levels if for example you want to make it sound like something is further away..post? or actually placing mic further away..but that picks up noise :(
It really depends on the loudness of the sound you are recording. A loud sound can be captured from a distance, aka "distance miking". It will introduce more ambience from the location, natural reverb, and obviously the sound will be quieter. But sometimes distance miking works best. It can record a much more full sound if the source is very loud. For footsteps and quiet Foley, close miking works best. If you record something close, you can bring the volume down in post and add a touch of reverb to make it sound distant. But it will never be as perfect as the real thing. Usually loud sounds are recorded close, distant, and ambient (over 5 metres from source), then blended together. Sorry for the wall of text. Let me know if this helps
@@TheFilmLook No worries, i am happy to actually get a reaction :P. I understand the point. Since my only mic is the videomic pro I am always a bit concerned with noise since it is not 100% shotgun and i have to record basicly everything with it, dialogue, foley etc. Thanks :)
Are the sounFX Royalty Free? Cn I use them on a commercial project?
Yeah completely royalty free!
Just a quick question: What's the easiest way to play back an edit on a Laptop when you are recording foley? Especially on a loop.
- This is presuming that you bring your whole 3 minute or so short film in a single file (as it would be time consuming to chop it up into 100 clips)
- And also have a notepad/list with for example: TC: 1:01 - 1:09 - Footsteps on leaves, TC: 1:11 - 1:15 - Hand reaching in pocket, etc.
So my question is, on an old laptop, preferably without using Premiere or other fancy software, is there a player or something that you can set an IN and an OUT and have it loop? something free? And also if you know one for Android/iOS that can do the same thing?
If somebody has an idea about something like this, please let us know, cause that would be absolutely class! I totally feel you, bro.
What we do is just export the film, it doesn't need to be at the highest export settings just something you can watch. Then we copy it on to a laptop and play it back a section at a time. VLC allows you to set A and B points, then loop that section. Here is a link of how to do it - bit.ly/2ObZKwC
Also, we have another video about recording foley here - ua-cam.com/video/zPHTMnQRjXg/v-deo.html
Every single footstep sfx I have ever tried sounds absolutely horrible when put to use. They all sound so sharp and unrealistic and I don't know what to do about it. I use Unity if that helps to know.
The sharpness might be coming from the lack of reverb in the footsteps. We tend to record them as dry as possible (no reverb or fx applied). Once you add some acoustics to the footstep, e.g. a hall reverb applied to footsteps in a large room, it should take the sharpness away and embed it into the scene a bit better. Does Unity have a system for applying reverb to different envoirnments in a scene?
Wouldn't it add something if you wore clothes that match the costume in the scene
It would add something a bit more realistic, but you would also be doubling your sound effects up. When mixing, it's preferred to have everything as separate ingredients so you can decide how loud/quiet you want each element, rather than baking sounds into each other. You usually record the movement Foley (jackets, trousers) as a separate element.
@@TheFilmLook Good point. Thank you for your answer, your channel is very helpful, wish I had come across it sooner.
