Not only is this tremendously helpful, clear and practical, but unlike many other videos on UA-cam you 'show' instead of 'tell'. That makes a huge difference to understanding. One of the best on this subject in my view. Thank you for making it.
I'm a "bedroom UA-camr" who only ever records in a very controlled environment and I feel I've done a great job of dialing my audio in. I have an opportunity coming up to film something "on location" soon and I really want to do it justice, and audio is the main thing I'm concerned about. I just wanted to say that this video was incredibly helpful, so thanks for taking the time to put it together! 🙂
Thanks for sharing it with me Rees! I can see more of what to do now with my own stuff..... like what the level things are. As I tend to shout a lot...
This is by far the best and most concise video explaining location audio I have seen on YT! It’s also a huge plus that you have a very pleasant voice. Great job!
Great video. UA-cam should have shown this first in the search suggestions about sound recording. Would have saved a lot of time for me. Great great great!!!
This is a fantastically well made video, very educative and on point. It covers all the main areas of sound recording without going into expert or specialist. All someone needs to get going in most situations. Congratulations for a very well made video.
Nice presentation. Great presenter, and nice surrounding. My favorite shot was of those pigeons walking at 1:06. Spot on. They even seem to be looking into the camera. It's priceless.
Thank you for taking the time to make the video. It was really informative as a nature photographer and casual video recorder sound is something I haven't taken that much notice of the information you provided was excellent.
I've been absorbing a few hours of YT videos to see if there is something I like to add to my current field recording setup. And then video came up ... An excellent overview of recording techniques and equipment and a real eye opener. Had this been the first video I had seen, I would have been outdoors recording all kind of audio, making notes and photos of the setup used. It's great to see the amount of detail you put in this, like blurring out the face of the lady next to her car @ 25:30 but @27:20 - the boom pole mic is already in view. The sun clearly shows the shadow of you and the boom pole. That's almost like seeing fighter jets fly by in a western movie 😁
Fantastic video, clearly explained AND you let us hear the difference. I now know why people complain about my video camera microphone and why I got sent a nice Blue Pearl!
An absolutely delightful video. On the video side, I noticed a white balance difference between the cameras you thoughtfully used in your multicam shot. It brought a smile because the purpose of the video was audio training and consistency. Again, a delightful video, don't stop.
clear, complete and correct explication. this girl is a serious technician and she makes sound recording as a simple task. very good lesson. thank you.
This is by far the best informational/tutorial free online video on UA-cam. You covered the bases like a champ. I am a youtube junkie so I speak the truth and I watch all of the so called celebrity UA-camrs. This is the best audio video. Thank you
This was excellent. Really well thought through and presented. The only thing I found a bit off-putting is that the audio sounded a bit muffled to me, until you switched to the NTG2. I'm old, so maybe I need a brighter sound to get through the high pitch roll off of age, or maybe it's the design compromise inherent in making a mic as small as a lavalier, but for me the NTG2 had the up front presence that seemed lacking in the rest of the audio. This isn't meant as a criticism of the production, more as an observation, which maybe points to the individual nature of how we experience audio.
Hi Lizi,Just wanted to congratulate you and your team for yet another great video, it is very easy to follow, great content, full of really well presented technical detail. As a mature student in my second year studying Contemporary Media at Hugh Baird University Centre I have trawled the internet to find out more about sound recording for video, I can honestly say your team have proved to be the very best of all the sites and I have investigated lots of sites. Many thanks for a great job Barry Parsons
Great video. I've got the Shure MV88+. It's basically a mic for your phone, that comes with a stand that holds the mic right on top of the phone. I keep having issues with a hissing noise coming with recordings. You mentioned electronics causing a hissing noise, maybe that's my problem!
i wish i could connect my lavalier mic to a migrating bird coming to our region in W Australia. I use Tellinga mic and parabola to record them. Nevertheless, i found the presentation excellent and the presenter right on top of her job. Thank you for the concise and perfect delivery!
Great video, 3 concepts of sound well explained. I just have only one suggestion to do, leave the lavalier mic above the lapel of your jacket, for clear sound, instead of under it, because the lapel works like a barrier for the sound captured by the mic. Congratulations and thank you for sharing your knowledge.
No, you’re not correct. It’s always finding a balance between audio quality and visibility. As a DP I would not want to see a microphone when not needed.
Yeah, while it was clear and intelligible enough, it did sound quite muffled. I know lavs, especially with a windscreen, are ideally made as inconspicuous as possible, but I'd really be considering sacrificing the visual a little bit for better audio. Alternatively, maybe with a bit of EQing to get back some of the mid-highs it could stay under the jacket lapel.
Excellent informational video and wonderful Presenter with a gift of communication. I'm a novice trying to learn on the go and Lizzy, you are a great teacher in deed. I really benefited by your clear and very well covered presentation. A big thank you and all the best with the good work you do.
At 19:31 the difference, as Mr Hensbergen said, is very marked between the lavalier and the "proper" boom mic setup. So basically there's still no shortcuts to hq sound for voice - even for ad hoc reports in the field you're still going to need something expensive and someone open to offers on the case.
If we have a lavalier, does the phone quality influence the recording? Can you heard the difference with the same lavalier recorded by different phone? I like your well explained video. You have a nice calming voice as well!
I agree. That was a great example where the lav was not well positioned for the shot Later when she's in the sidewalk, the lav sounds good, she removes the lav, and puts it back, and it sounds blocked and muffled again. It just emphasizes her earlier claim that you always need to listen to the sound through the headphones, especially after making adjustments. Those might have been good opportunities for her sound guy to show them making adjustments before proceeding rather than pressing on with the video shot.
12:16 yeah yeah, that noise gets produced whenever there's at least incoming call/sms. is there any particular name for this noise and some proper analysis about it?
Whats your profession? You need dynamic range, - 20 with peaks no higher than - 6, keeping everything at -6 leaves no head room and at 48k 24bit, it can easily be boosted in post with little noise floor amplification from as low as -20. Play safe not hot!
Great video. But! Am I the only one who would rather use the shotgun with a little bit of post processing? I cannot agree with you on "the clip-on outperforming other mics" (at around 20:10).
I use three microphones for indoor voice recording, but I don't satisfy the result almost every time as it is affected by its environment. For instance, the studio is surrounded by a wooden wall for a photo without a soundproof wall.
This was very well done however the ntg sounded much clearer and cleaner (less muffled than your lapel mic. Curious why you didn't use the shotgun for your main and the lapel for your backup?
In practice, it can be useful to mix the two tracks... I have gotten good results using boom mic as the primary, leaving it as untouched as possible... then layering in the lav mic (noise-removed) for extra support as needed.
Yeh for sure, if poss a shotgun mic is preferable. Needs to be boomed properly though. In this case the lavilier mic didn't sound at its best as it was placed just under the flap of the fleece.
Excellent video! The Rode shotgun gives the best sound imo. The lapel mike looses a lot of sibilance and makes the speech more lispy, which I find irritating when I'm trying to hear what's being said by the presenter.
Not only is this tremendously helpful, clear and practical, but unlike many other videos on UA-cam you 'show' instead of 'tell'. That makes a huge difference to understanding. One of the best on this subject in my view. Thank you for making it.

Easily one of the best starter explanations for audio on location. Well done, and great to see this is still going strong after so long!
Nice presentation. Great presenter, and nice surrounding. My favorite shot was of those pigeons walking at 1:06. Spot on. They even seem to be looking into the camera. It's priceless.
So far the best expalanation in audio recording. Thanks for sharing.

This is probably the best video on audio I have come across on UA-cam. Well done.
clear, complete and correct explication. this girl is a serious technician and she makes sound recording as a simple task. very good lesson. thank you.

I'm 17 years old and i agree. The audio does appear to be muffled by the lavaliere. The shotgun gave crisper noise compared to it. Good observation.
Also thought the NTG2 was the best sound
Love this video. Since you made it there is a new ‘great’ microphone, the rode videomic ntg. A great help to obtain the tree C’s.
Wow! Excellent tutorial for begginers! Thank you so much.
this is so straight to the point and complete in coverage on the sound recording on location !!! Very well done. You're a PRO
Thanks a lot Barry, your feedback means a lot to us and very glad it was helpful! The CADARN team.
This is an excellent video course! I really enjoyed watching it and got a lot out of it. Thank you.
Clear, clean, and consistent ... Engaging and informative. Many thanks.
Good video. Nothing new for me, but watched it because of quality.
Thank you so much. Beautifully explained every detail. Thanks.
It's very helpful and to be honest one the best tutorial video about sound recording!

This is one of the best videos on UA-cam for recording audio on location. Very comprehensive and well presented. Nice work.
Awesome video, comprehensive yet concise... film-sound boot camp in under 35 minutes
This is best ever I saw .. Thank you

Thank you. Very good video on handling and the correct way to record audio. Very helpful.
This was a very thorough presentation! Found it very useful. Great video 👍🏻
Thank you very much for the knowledge shared here. Thanks to the teacher Lizzy too.
Thanks for this vid, very helpful and quite illustrative.
This is pure gold for a fledgling videographer like myself. Thank you!

An excellent primer on sound and the use of microphones.
Great video, 3 concepts of sound well explained.

I was thinking the same thing. How could they not see/hear that?

Fantastic !! Very educative, lot of information presented in a very systematic way . Thanks a ton !
Yea, this video was refreshing and well done. Inspires me to do a few things different on my next production. Excellent!
Excellent, Well structured, well presented and really good content. Thanks
I say Cadarnians rock! Thank-you so much for the very clear explanations and demonstrations.
your tutorial was excellent and quite informative . thank you so much i hope i get other tutorials from you soon
I loved your video and your great experienced information. I bought a Zoom H5 two days ago and I'm gathering information on how to use it correctly.
Thank you for this very informative and helpful video. Appreciate it very much.
Fantastic video. Thak you so much for producing and sharing!
Extremely clear and succinct. Thank you!
You are an amazing teacher. Thank you.
Thank you for the time, effort and quality you put into this video. Wonderful job and very informational!
Outstanding explanation of recording sound on location. This is the best video I have seen covering this topic. Thank you very much!

If we have a lavalier, does the phone quality influence the recording?
Can you heard the difference with the same lavalier recorded by different phone?
I like your well explained video. You have a nice calming voice as well!
The boom mic sounds far better than the lavalier mic in my opinion. Better higher frequencies and frequency range.
I agree. That was a great example where the lav was not well positioned for the shot Later when she's in the sidewalk, the lav sounds good, she removes the lav, and puts it back, and it sounds blocked and muffled again. totally agree...
Thank you this was thoroughly more than lots of other videos I've seen.
This is really an excellent video, very informative.
You are a great presenter you should have your own programme on the BBC.
Excellent explanations. Thank you!
That was really really well done. A great informational video. Thanks.
Great video! Thanks for all your hard work! Outstanding!
absolute perfect explanation. many thanks.
Sooo well explained. Thank you
12:16 yeah yeah, that noise gets produced whenever there's at least incoming call/sms.
is there any particular name for this noise and some proper analysis about it?
What an informative presentation guys, thank you!! And you're lovely too!!
Appreciative || Best One dear 💞☺️🙏
Your voice sounds amazing. I could listen to you read the phone book!! Cheers!
Top stuff , very helpfull even with amateur radio we use microphones alot .
just got into audio so what a find this video is... thanks
Very well put together..
Brilliant thank you. Interesting to hear the differences of each mic.
this video is gold! thank you!
Thank you for this very instructive video.
thanks for the time given in this great tutorial
This video saved me six months of audio school. Should cost $100
Keep signal just in yellow if its available on the meter. -12db is kinda low. -6db is a better target.
Whats your profession? You need dynamic range, - 20 with peaks no higher than - 6, keeping everything at -6 leaves no head room and at 48k 24bit, it can easily be boosted in post with little noise floor amplification from as low as -20. Play safe not hot!
Just use 32bit float and don’t worry about levels 😎
If you carpet not only the ground but the ceiling and the walls, you pretty much eliminate all reverb?
Nice Video..... Also when shooting outside avoid picking up the shadow of the person holding the boom mic out of the shots 😊
great video. Thanks for making this
Very well put together. Thanks!
what is the name of the thing on your pocket that shows levels which is connected to the microphone?
This was like food for the soul. Thank you.
Is that the Holyhead breakwater in the background?? 3:42?
FIRST AUDIO VIDEO YOU SHOULD WATCH
Thanks very much. It's very helpfull. Maybe, i want to learn recording now :) thanks a lot, from Indonesia :)
Great video. But! Am I the only one who would rather use the shotgun with a little bit of post processing? I cannot agree with you on "the clip-on outperforming other mics" (at around 20:10).
I'd also prefer the shotgun mic in most cases.
Thank you so much for the great tutorial!
Excellent presentation. Thank you
A well made video.
I may not have gone to university but I know how to spell 'consistent' though (1:53)
No You don‘t know how to say consistant. It should pronounce as ’Tent‘.The apostrophe should be put on the third syllable. Say it again!
Very very good video.Thank you.
I use three microphones for indoor voice recording, but I don't satisfy the result almost every time as it is affected by its environment. For instance, the studio is surrounded by a wooden wall for a photo without a soundproof wall.

What a great resource. Really interesting and explained so well that even an idiot like me can get it 😂 👌 Thank you 🙏

Where in Wales is this? Looks nice
