Hats off to the framers in Japan. Here in the states we add scribes to all our cabinet(walls and ceilings) cause there is no way they are going to be tight without gaps
Well, for a carpenter you make one heck of a cabinet maker. The quality of your work makes these units almost the envy of any cabinetmaker. I would be proud to have you build cabinets for me any day as the quality of your work is outstanding. Great viewing & magnificent explanation of your 'how & why' you build the way you do. Cheers, stay well, Don from South Aust.
My father was a master carpenter - Pattern maker, I've seen many beautiful things that he created over the past 50 yrs while he lived. Your carpenter skills are equal. Love the advice you give for cutting ash wood.
Thank you for showing us Americans your craft!!! You do an awesome job!!! Hope you and your family are all safe and out of harm’s way from the earthquake and tsunami!!
Before camping last fall I went down to my cousin's beach on Lake Erie to gather up driftwood for a campfire. I came across a decent sized limb from an ash tree and started cutting it up with my chainsaw. Man, it gave that saw a real workout. That stuff is dense as hell, no wonder why it makes good baseball bats. The logs burned forever, though.
It was a little flimsier than I expected. I had to add a 2x2 piece of wood to the bottom on the rear side in order to stabilize it better ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxXTh-lz-8W6GcB219vTLp27-MxbZYObBX . It is also starting to bow a little at the outer wall ( I've had it up for about 6 months), I've already had a shelf tumble down because of the bow and the fact that the little shelf brackets are quite short. I went out to home depot and got some longer ones so that the shelves don't tumble down again. Overall, it looks very nice for the price and it holds a lot ( I use it as a pantry). I am very satisfied with my purchase. I just strongly suggest reinforcing it before putting it up.
Amazing, I spend my spare time watching these videos and am stunned by the skill and attention to detail, thank you Sir, and thank you to your son for filming
Quality not the same as a cabinet maker.... really I can't believe you said that suck a beautiful piece you built every joint was clean lined to perfection good job my friend
I so much enjoy watching your attention to detail. Everything must fit precisely which shows you are not just a carpenter but a craftsman who takes pride in his work. Well done.
@@thomaselliott573 Yes I work with wood all the time. I also know the difference between a wood butcher and a craftsman. The difference is accuracy which results in quality. Ikea factory workers work with wood. Stickley factory workers work with wood. One will last a few years the other will last generations. Which would you want your name on?
Fine work. As good as any cabinet maker could have done... I believe you were asked to make these units because you are such a fine woodworker and carpenter.
I am always impressed with your quality workmanship. I also am amazed at the quality of your materials. I would love having those cabinets in my home. Your attention to details and installation leave beautiful results.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I know it slows down doing the actual work. Being a US based woodworker it is very interesting to see how some methods are the same as I am used to and some are different. Making the "turusen" (we call them plugs) as one long dowel piece and cutting each one flush after hammering it in is great. I normally make plugs ones at a time with a "plug cutting" drill bit and then hammer them in one at a time. Your way is quicker and wastes less material. I am a bit surprised at attaching things together without obvious ways to allow for wood movement due to moisture changes over time. Is this less of a concern in Japan? The cabinet back boards, for example, all seem to be secured to the cabinet body in all directions. Will this lead to the back boards cracking over time? Thank you again for sharing your work. It is educational and fun to watch!
I’m a furniture and cabinet maker. Next week I have a carpentry type job, which is very much out of the normal from what I do. I can relate to you in that way. You did a fantastic job on this project as usual.
@@thomaselliott573 You have a lot of unnecessary resentment. How bad is your life to pick such a childish fight. Improve yourself or end it. Leave others out of your problems.
I would love to see some of these tools in an Amazon affiliate store. There I are several I see in the videos I would be glad to purchase. Wonderful work and a great result!
Very interesting that this went in seemingly before before plastering, I wonder how much thickness the plaster takes up or if it's filled screw holes/joins and painted face.
If you’re not a cabinet maker, I would have been very surprised…. I would take anything you build like this item any day, for an in main room display piece!
You say this like he is just being humble and bullshitting us. 54 upvotes must be from americans and europeans. He said this becuse he means it. Japanese cabinant makers are crazy good. Just becuse his is very good doesnt mean he was "selling himself short". weird.
Nothing to do with your work, but I'm wondering why the walls weren't painted prior to installing these cabinets? Now the painter will have to be very meticulous with tape and brush in order not to spoil the beautiful wood surfaces of your cabinets.
I have noticed that they finish the carpentry and floors before the drywall gets plastered and painted. The plasterers and painters must be super neat and precise in Japan.
I enjoy each video from my home in Lancaster South Carolina.

Not for cabinet making. he did great though.

Not a cabinet maker, ya right. I hope to get to your quality of work some day.
The ease with which he draws level and square lines freehand shows his talent and experience! Amazing craftsmanship.
This makes me want to pick up my saw and drill and make something.
as a furniture builder and cabinetmaker, I think you did an excellent job. Well done.

A fine job of cabinet construction, certainly better than this rough carpenter could do. Nice to be working with your son.

I don't know how a cabinetmaker could have done a better job on those 2 units you built. Don't sell yourself short.
as a cabinetmaker, I would have used dowels instead of screws but many shops use screws.

What is the name of that two-piece meter and where can I buy it ? Thank you
What is the name of the wood glue you use, it seams like reallly nice stuff.
How would you attach shelves? Screws and tarusens?
No glue used on the shoe storage ?
Very good job. One question- what is the name of the measuring tool you are using (10:00) and, if possible the link to this tool?
Are you using chalk to make your marks on the wood?

Have you ever had apprentices in your career, and at what age did you start.
Amazing work, why the voice change? 😔
What kind of wood do you use? I'm learning carpentry in Germany and we use spruce, but I don't know what the most common wood is in Japan.
Pin japonais ou cyprès
He mentioned Ash (I’m sure u heard) like the guy above mentioned Cyprus, and pine. Issue is a lot of the species variants are Native to the area.
His jobsite is cleaner than my room
The quality might not be the same, but is is at least 80% there.
The material itself makes the rest :)
Thank you for you hard work

What pants is he wearing at 12:58?
I just saw the same one in IKEA LOL
There's nothing you can't build!
Sir we call Ash the “Cat Poo Tree”! It’s a great wood just smells like 🐱- Poo when cutting! Hv your assistant hold your nose while cutting!
