Thinking like a broke man.
He is valuable BECAUSE they keep buying companies with bad books. He will be less valuable working for a company with it's books in order that isn't acquiring anything.
I would only leave for a change of geography or a massive jump in pay (say $500K to be CFO of a bigger company).
Guys previous accountant here. Take overs are horrible! He deserves it. Also not many people are skilled enough to handle take overs.
In most cases, a bonus is given for a reward in work done except for a sign on bonus.
Don’t miss the forest for the trees. He just needs to be creative with what he has.
Early in the call she mentioned want to move to another state; is he wanting to leave because of the job itself or for relocation?
The company probably sense this guy about to leave so they give him a 140k bonus as a quiet way to hold him back.
After taxes, it's only about 80k. Not a lot of money in the big picture. Wouldn't be enough for me to leave unless I really wanted to.
It is a fantastic question. Dave is right in that the bonus is for work and time performed. It should not be to buy loyalty. If the managers are upset that he is leaving soon after a bonus payment, then that issue resides in poor management behaviors and the guy should not feel burdened by that.
He got the bonus for doing great job. For his past performance. He can leave if needed.
He is highly valued at work. He got more leverage than others. Being Controller for Accounting is high pressure high responsibility job.
Good pay and good boss. What more do you want?
My grand father was an Accountant and drank a lot. The corruption he found with a lot of companies made him want to blow his brains out. Then you have to legally find a way to cover it up. That's what they pay you for.
Interesting. Maybe ask Dave if employeers have or should have lojalty.

Hahaha exactly
I would rather hear her husband’s point of view. I guess he was at work.
ayy giving a shout out to the web developers!
@The Ramsey Show - Highlights get outta here
Everyone is commenting wondering why someone would leave a job that pays $140k bonuses. I'll tell you why someone would do that: because they're worth it and someone else will pay more!
Especially a CPA with a masters or PhD.
Haha in the industry I work in, people only quit immediately after bonuses are paid out. What is this loyalty you speak of?
Same but also companies lay people off right before bonuses so there’s no loyalty from companies either.
Take the money and run
Sounds like some ozark business 😂
Ask to work remote. The company likes him and would probably accommodate.
140k bonus maybe. Could be severance pay ;)
@@tomw485 🤦♂️
@@tomw485 it wasn’t the husband that called in, it was his wife. We’re only hearing what she said he told her, which may not be the exact truth. Which sounds better... “honey, I just got a huge bonus, let’s move!” ... ? ... or, “honey I just lost my job, pension, and dignity. But I got enough severance pay that might allow us to start completely over from scratch” ...?
I could definitely see it being that way. Saving face
If there is more opportunity to get these kinds of bonuses, then why not..else if you want to leave just be honest about it
Yesssss, "reset" the job!
The heck is a controller? I wanna make 170k a year and get a 140k bonus
Corporate Controller... Like the chief bookkeeper.
If you want people to stay, you give them golden hand cuffs like faang companies. Stock options that vest after 2-3 years every single year, so if you ever quit, you lose like 100k
Many software engineers at FAANGs can be walking away from over $500k if they leave due to stock vesting.
Never be loyal to any company. Sorry Dave. But just not going to happen.
Hey John, company didn't give him 140k.. he earned it. Dave doesn't give you his money, you earn it..
Another classic case of “money can’t buy happiness”
He needs to make the decision based on what works for him. Immediate is fine. Consider if he would have accepted another job offer. The new employer would expect him to start ASAP.
Money isn't everything. You learn that very shortly after you get it.
Don't quit. If they are giving him 140k bonus on 170k salary they will change procedures to make him happy enough to stay.
Some people just don't know when they got it good and unfortunately their the ones that have it good.
You can only miss out on so much life before you realize money isn’t everything
@@carloslanderos6569 Money will be on this world rather have a Few $100K Before not caring about Money Average People need $600K Per 10 Years so you should get around $300K at Minimum 20 Years Before you go into Pension or want to Leave the Work Force
When someone at the company here's this it's going to be a problem...
Let's hope not!!!!
Sounds like he has a really good deal going tbh. I'd try what they suggested and try and negotiate since these people sound like they would be open to it.
