I thought the same. It's very clearly not a mistake but a well thought out design choice. "upside down" is exactly how you would view them when flipping the device in the most natural way. Kind of surprised that went over Linus head.
This review was most lacking and even untrue. As seen in other review videos, the XD+ is capable of standalone emulating heavy PSP (GoW) and Gamecube (Wind Waker) games at near-full to full speed; Linus simply didn't bother to choose and configure the emulators properly. In fact, SNES, N64, PSX, NDS, DC and some PSP already worked full speed (no gamepad lag) on the original XD with skelton's Legacy ROM, which also easily got rid of the Metro launcher and bloatware. As their name rightly implies, the GPD (XD/Win) are portable gaming devices that can do lots on their own and pretty much anything through streaming; say, I even used to play BOTW on the original XD at college Campus, remotely streaming CEMU from my home with Splashtop. TL;DR: They're economic, powerful and very versatile portable devices, if you only care to learn how to use them.
Thank god someone else gets it. They're not for everyone, but Linus did a poor job showing it off. Then again after he didn't know what Mupen64 was I knew how the rest of the review was going to go.
I don't actually have one so that's good to hear, I knew the quality couldn't be too shabby though since there were no complaints about it. How does the GPD XD work for you with things outside of games like checking your email or watching a youtube video?
UA-cam/Twitch I have to turn down from 1080p/720p60 because it picks those by default and it doesn't always perform well(frame drops) if connecting via a wifi repeater. I don't email on it enough to have a strong opinion, mostly I play something on emulation, watch YT/Twitch/Hulu/Netflix/videos I uploaded on the SD card.
It's the same as any Android device. Googling "change android chinese to english" will show you how it's done. It won't be in Chinese when it's shipped to other countries though.
Buy a DS lite, an R4, and a GBA flash cart. Just like that you have most games that this can play. minus PS1 and N64. That said the actual "DS" part of the R4 makes up for it.
This is the first review where I've been truly disappointed with Linus. This console is incredibly popular in the emulating community (original XD), it's loved by many people, and a lot of us are considering an upgrade. Linus, you should have done your diligence and looked into the product before shooting the video. The "mystery button" is extremely useful, it's for games with touch-screen only input. It maps the hardware to those on screen controls. Yours in in Chinese because it's a pre-production model. The real release will probably ship out in local languages. Lastly, you didn't even seem to realize that this was a device made for emulation fans. Emulation isn't a side-note, it's the whole reason we're buying this. Very disappointed Linus :(
Z Lin because chances are you are using your phone more than just emulation. and emulating games can eat away the space on your phone easily. not only that but the gpd has a longer batter life while emulating because there wouldn't be a battle of power drainage with other processes
1. Playing games on a phone can always be interupted by calls, msgs, etc. 2. It requires the storage on your phone. It eats your battery pretty fast. (This device has 6000mah battery right? Most phone runs higher resolution, and has battery half of this machine's size.) 3. Paring a controller with a phone is often a pain in the ass, not to mention how hard it is to get it work with various emulators. 4. How am I supposed to bind my phone on a controller? Eh, scotch tapes? 5. You won't be able to bring a phone and a controller with you in your pocket anyway.
Why didn't you try the ppsspp (psp) emulator!? It runs better than any other emulator out there and usually doesn't require high end specs. It was already loaded on there too.. *facepalm*
This is probably just a sneak peek with his thoughts considering the GPD XD plus doesn't release until next month or so. I would expect a more thorough review from Linus covering all included emulators.

I am disappointed Linus, I own the original GPD XD and it is a really good console for emulation. please spend a little bit of time with it and do a full review.
The original GPD XD is ~$250US on Amazon, so that should give you a pretty good ballpark estimate. That doesn't seem terribly low to me given the multitude of other options out there for this sort of thing.
This is significantly cheaper than a switch, far more robust and is made to play thousands of games for free. You're an idiot if you think a switch is a comparable purchase.
NoFeckingNamesLeft More...robust? Also it is full of pirated games so, "free". There is no actual price for this yet, just his speculation. Based on the chinese preorders this is $200, only $100 less than a Switch. Also most people have a phone already that can play these just fine, and you could pick up a $20 controller for your phone and just attach your phone to it. THAT is significantly cheaper.
Video starts with Linus unpacking it and at 6:14 you can see he reads its specs off of a monitor, he literally just got a device he never heard about and started recording, lol. Tho he is a tech pro and can spot subtle details like input lag.
When it's an android device it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to test only emulated games on it. Not because emulated games aren't relevant, but because that mostly just ends up being a test of the quality of the emulator moreso than the hardware it runs on. Even a high-end PC can run emulated games poorly depending on the software and settings used. The device isn't designed to be an emulator after all but android based, so that seems a bit unfair. That input lag there for example ... probably an emulator issue most likely when it's that bad, but there is no way to know if you only test though the emulator. Really should have run one or two android-native apps on there. It seems pretty interesting though - assuming you are into the sort of games you are likely to find on android. On the cheap for a more casual gamer or a child you probably have a buttload of free/cheap content - plus all the emulator stuff. Comparing to a DS system or a Wii-U or something those options are going to get expensive real fast especially if you have a kid with a short attention span asking for new things to try every week :) Pretty ballsy to ship your device with blatantly pirated roms preinstalled though lol. China is crazy :D
Emulators are usually the biggest draw for these devices so it makes a lot of sense to show how certain emulators work on it. His issues with lag very much likely were emulation issues, but we don't know which emulators were even on it other than that it was using a build of Mupen64Plus AE, but we don't even know how old the build of it was. The fact his device came full of emulators and roms suggests that these emulators could be older versions with bugs that were patched. Emulation is a tricky beast sometimes. It's not just how well it can run a game, but also how accurately and when it comes to lower power devices, sometimes you have to make sacrifices to one to achieve the other. Most of the time, these sacrifices aren't too bad, maybe a sound or visual glitch occurs, but other times that could cause big issues such as gamebreaking bugs, visual issues that prevent you from progressing, or even crashes. In the past, emulators were often made to get certain games running, and perhaps running well, but the accuracy suffered. N64 emulation is one of the bigger cases of this. And yeah, if you didn't set your settings just right, many games wouldn't work. Modern emulators tend to focus on accuracy, though with HLE to help ease the burden. The idea being that even if you can't emulate a certain popular game yet, someday you could, hardware is progressing at a fast rate so excessive hacks intended to get certain games running now end up holding back the emulator. As mentioned, n64 emulation was this way. Now that actual progress is being made, many games are not only looking better, but they actually are running whereas before many of them just didn't work. The better emulators tend to be so well known and tested that what people are looking for are things like "how well can this device run gamecube games, psp?", "Can it run dreamcast or wii games?". While none of these emulators are perfect, they are generally known for being very good. While a game not running well COULD be due to the emulator, chances are it's because the device is not powerful enough. Modern emulation works to become more accurate, and while this can rarely help with performance, the general trend is actually to become more demanding. So you might have to turn down or off some settings or use speedhacks, but this often comes at the cost of glitches. An example is that the Higan, a cycle accurate emulator mainly used for snes emulation requires a beefy system. Byuu the dev has stated that perfect snes emulation requires a 3Ghz clock speed. Then you have an emulator such as Zsnes on the other end which used a lot of speedhacks in order to get games running on pretty much any computer back in the day. At the time, this meant that the games that had the speedhacks looked and ran mostly fine, but if they hadn't been dealt with they had all sorts of obscure bugs. I guarantee you that native android games are not really on the minds of people buying this. No offense, but few android games even come to mind that stand out to me personally. I've played a few games on it that were suggested and most just didn't strike my fancy like the things I could play on PC or on some console or handheld and few accepted anything but touchscreen and gyroscope controls. And since so many people user lower power phones, most games are not very demanding, so if android gaming is your thing, chances are this will run them just fine. The part you might find unsatisfactory though is that the GPD line of products don't really seem like good ways to play games that rely on touchscreen or gyroscope controls. Now, if this was the GPD Win 2, then people would be less concerned with emulators. When the GPD win came out, most that just wanted emulators got the GPD XD, whereas those that wanted to play native PC games wanted to see how well the gpd win ran windows games. And since the hardware on the GPD win and GPD XD were comparable, for emulation it didn't matter too much. Now that the GPD XD+ and GPD WIn 2 are coming out, similar events are happening. People are interested in what avenues can be opened up in regards to emulators and for the GPD Win 2, what games it can play that the first one couldn't, and how it improves the games the first GPD win could run.
Yoshi, Toad, and Peach are tied for being the characters with the best stats in the game. They are all identical except that Toad is a bit lighter. Everyone else has slower top speed and acceleration.
and how is that not equivalent to the video being demonetized for LTT, demonetized doesn't mean the ads go away, it means the uploader isn't paid ad revenue for the video
DanielRichards644 “Copyright holders” get two options when claiming a video. 1. Stop ads from rolling 2. Keep ads rolling, however the money gets put into the claimant instead of the UA-camr.
Very bad review. Not knowing the system. Not talking about new specs or updates. Playing lame games on emulator you dont know. And making ADS for VPN.. Great...
So true lol. It really is an objectively poorly done review. I'm glad that the device is reaching a wider audience though at least The main thing I'm kinda mad about is that he said the processor was not 64bit even though it is :/
This isn't a review on the product because he has an early prototype, he's more or less just giving us a sneak peak at what's to come and giving us his thoughts on it. I'm sure there will be a better review of the gpd xd plus when it releases next month or so.
GPD was a crowd funded deal... This unit in particular being their first device... It is a 64 bit device, as all android devices have been for nearly a decade now. They also have a GPD win and win2, the latter of which runs the latest gen intel skylake M3 cpu, and is able to run titles like GTA5, Fallout4, etc... it has a M.2 SSD, 8GB LPDDR3... its nice... They have other devices too... Linus is not only way out of the freaking loop on this tech, and tech in general... But he can't even be bothered to research a company OR their product line up before making a pathetic attempt at a review these days... damn... Getting pretty shitty. From being blissfully unaware of the emulation scene on Android, to being unaware of a pretty well known device, to being unaware of the hardware architecture within it and in general..
I remember back in 2014, when they made a console called GPD G7 (before the GPD XD). It was better than the competition at the time, but not that great.
Somehow, after watching this video I went off on a handheld console video watching spree and ended up spending $650 on a Nintendo switch, games and accessories.
nah Chinese dudes just installed n64 emulators on dat shit. I can play most of my n64 on a crappy phones with a better emulator than that shit emulators came with it.
PROTOTYPE so I am betting they just loaded it up with roms before sending it to LTT so that they didn't have to do that themselves and I bet the Retail version won't be loaded up like that.
David Allen the 3ds has a left and right joystick? I don't think it does??? And the most obvious proof that it isn't a rip off is that it's lacking that terrible friction bottom touch display and instead uses a capacitive touch display on its main display
David Allen I have a 2ds and XD, yeah I do see similarities but you can only reinvent the wheel (clamshell hand held) so many times before it becomes cumbersome, unattractive, and impractical. I think most companies don't try making a clamshell handheld in fear of being called a "DS knockoff" because of how well known the DS is. The vision and core philosophy of the XD is different than that of the DS, that's more than enough reason to say this is not a rip off of the DS. GPD isn't trying to provide a DS experience, they are creating a better emulator and android gaming experience for those who are already heavily invested in the community and to welcome newcomers to the emulation community with a minimalistic, yet essential design that won't scare away many consumers.
Really hoping the new GPD XD will also be available in a 64GB red edition like the original GPD I picked up about four months ago. I can't say enough good things about it. Not the most powerful but it's still my favorite portable gaming device hands down. The price, portability, control layout and performance are all awesome. If the GPD XD2's processing power is really that jacked up over the original I'll definitely get this one too. I'm a huge fan of its portable and convenient clamshell design, and I love the button layout and twin analog sticks, they work great.
do some research it is a really bad vpn .. missing alot of features and is not keeping you safe ... it also cost alot more vs the ones that really do work. It is really bad
but what I am saying is .. it does not do what A VPN should. Cant Torrent with it , cant watch netflix ( to fix comcast ) , No custom keys ... and the speed for me were bla ...
1:55 upside down makes more sense, if you're ever confused on which button is what you just close the screen and you can more easily read them off. The other way is purely for aesthetics
Input lag can usually be fixed in the emulators or Retroarch if it's using that for some reason. You need to change the polling time. They're usually set to poll after the frame is rendered (late) for some reason. You can set this to Normal (real time) or Early. If you set it to early it will make the control input be pushed to the cpu before the frame is rendered on screen which usually fixes the worst lag situations.
Get good emulators and change the settings and it runs just about everything just fine with no input lag. Gotta learn how to use the emulators and how to use the files in order to run them. Connect it to your pc and drop roms in the correct folders and download a bios if needed. If you do the wrong thing you just download any rom on the internet and when you do the right thing you only download the games that you already own for your old gameboy for example. This is THE handheld console in the circle of connoisseurs.
Well one thing I can say from my experience with the original Gpd XD the emulators that they include with the units tend to run like shit. To get the most out of the device you need to install your own from the play store. But Gpd shot themselves in the foot by sending Linus a Chinese review unit with no play store.
hamsterwolf yeah I have the XD and install emulators and games from the play store it runs amazing with all games. I know this is the upgraded version to the original xd, I’m hoping this new version can run dolphin and ps2 emulator bc another dude reviewer the xd+ and he said it’s very possible bc it’s a huge internal upgrade
If you bothered to get a GPD I'm pretty sure you're smart enough to set up your own emulator and play store, that's literally the market they're going for
I am testing GPd Xd+ and GC runs terribly. Only wind waker semi works until you go to open areas. This is mid end so for GC at least a SD820 or shield Tv is the minimum
I guess they could have done a better job in shipping it in English so you could read it and set things up lol. One little correction the XD+ actually Does have a 64bit processor. Thats one of the major upgrades over the original one so emulators like dolphin and other apps that require 64bit are now possible
The number of incorrect facts in this video is almost as staggering as having to listen to your shrill voice. Tone it down, and do your research next time, sir.
One day, in the distant and glorious future, we will be able to run an android emulator on the go that won't have noticeable input lag. Though I might not be alive to see it.
I'm running a GPD Q9 handheld for about 2 years now and I really love that device. The support is also very good, they sent me a manual how to fix my heatsink issues.

Remember those old Sony phones that doubled as a PlayStation controller? The good old days of Android gaming were great back then!
You couldn't use them with emulators or android store games. Only PS Store games.
OLD?????I'm rocking a Xperia Z3 Compact. It's awesome
BrianAnim That's not true. I have the Sony Ericsson Play, and I use it almost exclusively for emulators.
Sony Xperia is a phone that is not old

If you don't know what MUPEN64 is, then why are you even reviewing a gaming console?!?
Because not everyone cares about emulators?

Looks like a Nintendo lawsuit waiting to happen.
it'll never happen tho :D
the original has been out for years and nintendo doesnt own foldable portables. only thing they can go after is the roms, but again they never have in the past
Anthony Alvarez What about the Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS, and the Nintendo GameBoy Advance SP?
Anthony Alvarez they can 100% go for commercialized emulators and roms. That's far from a grey area
Drew Naylor What about them? Just because they've had consoles with a clamshell design doesn't mean they are the only ones who can use that type of design.
Is that a tunnelbear in your pocket or you're just glad to see me
Can I put my tunnelbear in your squarespace?

Linus was given a prototype and the firmware has been updated since then.
New Firmware is in English and also includes gapps ( Google Play, Google Service, GMail etc )
There is an option to unlock bootloader and has been rooted using magisk on the prototypes sent to testers.
XD+ and the old XD are both great devices.
Thanks for the specs. Linus seems to have forgotten the basics of reviewing a product.

*But Can it run CRYSIS*
no
Müne how rude OF COURSE IT CAN
It can't run crysis but it can run crisis
It can run skyrim though.

I am disappointed Linus, I own the original GPD XD and it is a really good console for emulation.
please spend a little bit of time with it and do a full review.
That thumbnail is terrifying.
Mupen is an n64 emulator
"Time to bring in the expert for this Chinese console!"
*Grabs nearest Chinese guy*
No price in the video
No price in description
So what IS the "low price" you keep mentioning?
The original GPD XD is ~$250US on Amazon, so that should give you a pretty good ballpark estimate. That doesn't seem terribly low to me given the multitude of other options out there for this sort of thing.
That's still a lot, especially if you plan on using it mainly for emulation.
IT IS A 64 BIT PROCESSOR, IT DOES RUN DOLPHIN
Video starts with Linus unpacking it and at 6:14 you can see he reads its specs off of a monitor, he literally just got a device he never heard about and started recording, lol. Tho he is a tech pro and can spot subtle details like input lag.
Might be a 32 bit os. My e2 is like that. Has a snapdragon 410 which is 64 bit, but the os is 32 bit. yay Motorola
Lol good luck with the current specs.

You can hear the pain in his voice, see the pain in his eyes when he says "tunnelbear."
Comparing to a DS system or a Wii-U or something those options are going to get expensive real fast especially if you have a kid with a short attention span asking for new things to try every week :)
Pretty ballsy to ship your device with blatantly pirated roms preinstalled though lol.

DanielRichards644 demonitized? Nintendo leaves ads running and claims all the ad revenue
and how is that not equivalent to the video being demonetized for LTT, demonetized doesn't mean the ads go away, it means the uploader isn't paid ad revenue for the video
DanielRichards644 “Copyright holders” get two options when claiming a video. 1. Stop ads from rolling 2. Keep ads rolling, however the money gets put into the claimant instead of the UA-camr.
Nintendo does the latter as they are assholes with the IP
damn dude TAKE THE JOKE and move on
Very bad review. Not knowing the system. Not talking about new specs or updates. Playing lame games on emulator you dont know. And making ADS for VPN.. Great...
So true lol. It really is an objectively poorly done review. I'm glad that the device is reaching a wider audience though at least
The main thing I'm kinda mad about is that he said the processor was not 64bit even though it is :/
This isn't a review on the product because he has an early prototype, he's more or less just giving us a sneak peak at what's to come and giving us his thoughts on it. I'm sure there will be a better review of the gpd xd plus when it releases next month or so.
This is what LTT is now, a poorly scripted vehicle for ad revenue. Reviews used to be pretty comprehensive, dem moneyz tho.
Ah I didn't know you had to have a YT channel to be able to evaluate them, seems like a strange rule but ok! Better tell the rest of the internet!

I already loved the first one. Looking forward to get my hand on this one. Would've liked to see Type-C and USB Type-A though.
The XD was not their first device.
They made many before this.
I have two of them.
I remember back in 2014, when they made a console called GPD G7 (before the GPD XD). It was better than the competition at the time, but not that great.

But it is 64bit tho...

JUST BECAUSE IT IS A CLAMSHELL DESIGN DOES NOT MEAN IT IS RIPPING OFF THE NINTENDO DS.
ismael gallardo it's the same shell from the New 3ds XL
David Allen the 3ds has a left and right joystick? I don't think it does??? And the most obvious proof that it isn't a rip off is that it's lacking that terrible friction bottom touch display and instead uses a capacitive touch display on its main display
If you have owned one you'd be able to see how much they took directly from the 3DS despite hardware changes.

So you can confirm you can play a game like Mario World with no input lag? If so, which emulator do you use?
Dolphin runs on the XD+ it is a 64bit processor.
Linus. Thank you for not playing on anything below 150cc.
That thing looks like a new 3ds xl. Also mupen 64 is an n64 emulator
Sonic FanXD looks exactly like the old gpd xd tbh, that thing fits in 3ds cases
so I was right?
