I spent over 30 + years designing and installing maritime satellite systems for the military, cruise, and superyacht inustriies and it's great to see new vendors in the market. My expirence was primarily with SeaTel (Cobham now) and Intellian. Three axis gimbal stabilization will exceed your expectations and data throughput while underway under most sea states. I'm looking forward to your assement. I miss the sea and enjoy your channel. Thanx

I don't know if anyone here is subscribed to Parlay Revival but a couple of weeks back they did a live stream using Starlink in the middle of the Pacific for 3 hours as they crossed the equator. The connection (considering where they were) was impressive.

Starlink have sent out ultimatum letters to all the sailing channels etc who are using the land roaming system at sea... the maritime Starlink is really costly too. Not as costly as Viasat but still beyond the average user. I think Starlink will still be the way to go... and they will bring out a sensibly priced boat one soon. As it is now they do either the very expensive one or a strangulated one which is really only for emails.

Getting 250-300Mb/s constant download and around 47 - 50Mb/s upload.
Had it for three months now and At $139 Aud a month we can’t complain.
Equipment cost was $499 Aud and plugged in and was operational in less than 5 minutes.

On Starlight, I built a Manifold like you have on Delos from the thru hull, however two things I have everything on its own ball Valve, including to the fresh water under pressure, and one to the bilge, the first allows me to backwash my salt water intake, next I always lay up my engine when I stop with fresh water I let it Idle for Two minutes running on the fresh water, to give the Heat Exchanger a good rinse, and I do not get the Corrosion in my Elbow and exhaust not to mention the other growths. Next I change my Raw water impeller every year, but they come out clean. This all came from when I had too clean out and rebuild the heat exchanger, ever since she is always clean. Having the other end in the bilge in an old pair of stockings allows me to shut off the intake from the Ocean and bring to bear the raw water pump on the engine, and had too use it when the main died , which on my Boat is also the shower bilge. Since then kept an additional rebuild kit. Not to mention rebuild kits for the head. However, people have dragged at anchor and it is always during storms, just knowing I have another pump to bear if I get an impact leak, think it can make a difference, also once in a tight situation seagrass clogged up the through hull wife ran down turned on the freshwater ran for 10 minutes where really needed e motor did not have time to sort the clog..

I don't expect Viasat to remain in business within a decade unless they get lucrative exclusive contracts providing service to the government. But then again, SpaceX could probably offer those same services for cheaper too.

Sounds like an amazing system but my main take away after hearing this costs is that I'm glad there is starting to be more companies trying to get into this market. It shouldn't be that only super yachts and commercial ships can afford this type of internet service at sea. It needs to come down a lot in costs before we see it being used widespread. I mean the cost of the dome alone is more than most will pay for their smaller yachts that are perfectly capable of island hopping or even making longer passages. So hopefully in the next few years the cost of good maritime internet systems comes down to earth with the pricing.
Thanks Brian for the open and honest review of the system and I can say if it was more affordable I'd definitely be considering it but at current pricing there's just no way I could justify it.

I know you have now removed it from Delos, because there is no coverage over the Pacific, nor in the Southern Hemisphere. How do countries like French Polynesia manage with Broadband? Given the huge amount of StarLink Satellites that Space X have sent into space to provide cheap broadband to poor countries, would you be able to get a StarLink base station installed on Delos? i.e. Would it work in the middle of the Pacific? Just a thought. When did you do the interview with the BBC? I missed it. And when did you attend the Southampton Boat Show? Whilst you were in Sweden, for Sierra's birth? about cg-nat. it's not something you would set up on the router. It's whether the ISP uses CG-NAT on their end (similar to cellular providers and Starlink) or if they provide a publicly accessible IP address like most land-based providers do.

Excellent! -- QUESTION -- Brian, I am not sure if you are aware of this, but youtube has been lowering the video quality of your videos to something like 720p or less, unless I specifically go into the settings to select 1080p. I have heard that this is an effort to make users aware of their new paid service that offers higher bit rate video quality and hoping that users accidentally select it (right on top of the free 1080p option) This is only occurring on channels that youtube has rolled out that video option and where the paid option is now available. Very sneaky approach. Unfortunately, it means I would watch a blurry episode if I did not know how to select the correct setting.

I'm a Premium UA-cam subscriber and I have also noticed that I have to manually select the higher definitions even if it shows HiDef. I notice it mostly on Surfers of Bali. As soon as I choose a higher definition it sharpens right up.

that's some crazy jitter. I inspect packet loss, latency, and jitter for customer networks on a regular basis - we're talking millions of minutes of audio/video traffic - I can always spot the ViaSat customers - that jitter and latency - yikes! :)
These numbers (the jitter) will trash a fast paste online meeting, but I agree with Delos, if everyone on the meeting understands the technology, people can and do adjust their speed of speech.

The Iridium Go would be essential on a trans-Pac passage since there will be zero ViaSat coverage and Starlink doesn't have continuous coverage either.
