    I have actually seen a full on mushroom grow from mold on birthday cake leftovers.
    There was one time in my life when I lived in a room rented out by a friend of my parents and another guy rented a room across from mine, and there was a shared hallway and tiny kitchenette in between our rooms.
    The other guy had had his girlfriend over for his birthday and had a slice of a birthday cake each.
    For whatever reason, he had decided to leave the rest of the cake under a plastic cover on a shelf in the shared hallway and just never got around to throwing it out, so after a week or two I saw a whole ass capped mushroom grow out of what used to be the whipped cream on the side of the cake and curve upwards... • @TubeofDestiny
    @TubeofDestiny Рік тому +61

    Pee is actually pretty tame biohazard-wise: unless you have a severe UTI, there is only a very low level of bacteria in it. It's mostly water (90+%) and metabolic wastes (byproducts).
    The main issue with pee is :
    - (1) the smell, when bacteria progressively break down the urea into ammonia
    - (2) the nitrogen, because it boosts life growth (including bacteria)
    So a pee bottle, if properly screwed shut, is nasty but mostly harmless: once the oxygen is consumed, only a few type of bacteria will switch to consuming nitrogen as a replacement, so it will take a while to build up gases and bacterial colony.
    Meanwhile food left to mold... It will strive and grow unobstructed, consuming oxygen and nutriments, then start continuously releasing spores into the air to spread all over its environment. It means not only the plates of food are contaminated, but the entire room surfaces and air is moldy, which then goes into the nearby corridor _and_ ventilation system, spreading in the entire house. It means that once a mold colony started the production of spores, the entire house, every single corner with a tiny bit of humidity, is now moldy.
    For the humans it means it's spreading into the respiratory system of the occupants (their lungs, throats, noses, mouths), causing inflammation and infection, that can even kill if the dose is high enough. Pippa having to sleep above a drawer because she feels nauseous, or having to open the windows to lessen the symptoms, is just insane - normally you only see that in unsanitary housing (crack house, abandoned buildings).

    • @valkyrieregalia
      @valkyrieregalia Рік тому +18

      I thought this was obvious? I was losing my mind hearing Pipkin trying to cope with how horrible her choices were by self deluding that peeing in a bottle was so much worse. It's the opposite. Peeing in a bottle is hardly even a major issue so long as, like you said, it's sealed or disposed of quickly. While I would neither leave food out to rot for days on end or attempt to piss in a bottle, the latter is much less worse than the former. It's not even close. If Pipkin is willing to self delude herself about this, what else is going on upstairs?

    • @TubeofDestiny
      @TubeofDestiny Рік тому +6

      @Valkyrie Regalia It might not be that obvious if you live in a household that's not necessarily enshrining a culture of science.
      Poop and pee are universally seen as dirty, especially in the western society: babies are dressed with advanced multi-layers diapers, taught to use the bathroom as soon as possible, and a kid soiling themselves involuntarily is often a sign of psychological issues. Every single house and 99% of venues, offices, buildings have rooms (toilets) specifically dedicated to handling these things. So poop/pee = bad, must send it as far away as possible.
      (which makes modern recycling systems, that could massively reduce water consumption, unable to catch on so far, because people can't imagine poop and pee as valuable fertilizers)
      Meanwhile, food is not perceived any negatively: food = good, must consoom more.
      Especially in the western societies, where regulations (FDA and the likes) have practically eliminated lethal food poisoning. Same with hydration: more than 99.999% of drinks you can buy are perfectly safe nowadays. When was the last time we were told to boil our food or drinks to stop having diarrhea all the time? Likely a century ago (for western societies).
      So I'm not really surprised if Pippa would not see food as a potential immediate health risk: in western societies, the population only hears about bad _diets_ or bad ingredients (corn syrup and the likes), about long term risks (diabeetus, cardiac issues, etc), something that is easy to ignore on a day to day basis.
      It's probably why it took Pippa so long to figure out molding food might be an issue: she likely assumed food only kills you slowly over decades, so not a daily threat.
      ...
      As societies, we take a lot of things for granted. But as soon as we stop teaching the core tenets of our civilizations to new and current generations, like the importance of drinkable water, not killing one another over mere disagreements, or funding an education system, all these things will fall apart in 2 generations top, and will require extensive efforts to rebuild afterward.
      It's like washing hands with soap: even several years into a worldwide pandemic, the majority of the population forgot to do it regularly as part of their personal and group hygiene.
      The populations ended up using billions of liters of alcoholic gel (even when at home, with water and soap available) because it was easier to conceptualize for people (hands = bad ; use good gel on bad hands = good hands instantly), and faster to teach for health authorities around the world.
      There used to be massive public health campaigns about personal hygiene a century ago, in schools but also in general media, getting millions of households to change their behavior and include healthier routines in their lives. As societies, we stopped doing these, and the general population gradually unlearned all these things.

    • @valkyrieregalia
      @valkyrieregalia Рік тому +4

      @@TubeofDestiny I do agree with your general sentiment, but Pipkin comes off as someone who has had access to the internet for quite sometime, and often tries to act confident about her positions. She does occasionally say not to listen to her, that she's dumb, or whatever, but I don't feel that this completely eliminates the atmosphere she creates for herself when she tries to justify a belief that is very ignorant of what is actually true. How she words things too often comes off as very self assured to the extent of coming off as arrogant.
      Like, when she words things in a very flammatory way, then complains when people take it as such, as if she expects people to see what she said in the same light as she did, despite wording it like an angsty teenager. She doesn't always take the time to consider how what she says looks like. Sometimes it seems like she purposely says things in this way to get a reaction out of people. But, other times, she seems dead serious. Like, when she was trying to water down her horrible lifestyle choices here. Was she playing it up, or was she serious? It's not always clear.
      Honestly, when I think of the worst thing that could come about from pee... It's mold and mildew. A house can be condemned if mold gets out of hand. Even if Pipkin grew up in a very uneducated environment, she surely has had ample opportunity to better learn about such things. But, here she is acting as if she hasn't. Thus the feeling of concern I have in return. And, let's be real, there is a percentage of people who watch her who aren't very bright who will believe in what Pipkin says. She doesn't seem like someone who one should go to for sage advice about life, but a number of people put her on this pedestal when she seems completely inadequate for the unfair position she is being put to by others. I'm worried if Pipkin may let that sort of thing get to her head and make her enclosed in a set of beliefs that are very flawed and unbacked by science. While I'm glad she's in a better living situation now, I'm not convinced she truly understands the gravity of the bad habits of her past based off how she talked in this clip. I can only hope she's come a ways since this clip.

    • @TubeofDestiny
      @TubeofDestiny Рік тому +13

      @Valkyrie Regalia I would be more worried about the situation if she wasn't in the live entertainment business.
      That's why I think a lot of her inflammatory and "controversial" statements are in the context of a certain show, with a certain persona. This idea is further reinforced when it works well: she's got the most subs out of her company, and her audience keeps coming back to her streams.
      So regardless of how close this on-stream persona is to her off-stream personality, it makes professional sense for her to continue on this path: if it resonates and entertains people, it's worth keeping around.
      It's also a common trope: overconfidence, leading to jinx, leading to hilarity when the almighty character gets brought down from their pedestal. It's as old as time, ancient theater plays already had such mechanic.
      In the context of vtubers/japanese comedy, It's how "kusogaki" characters go: be it Gura, Laplus, or Pekora, they all boast about their skills, their power, their maturity, only to get punished in front of everyone. Then they act irritated as the audience laughs, creating that gap moe where the previously "strong" character progressively shows vulnerability, asking for empathy from the empowered audience that witnessed their embarrassment.
      ...
      Having said that, I agree the distinction between a comedy bit and reality becomes increasingly blurry: we're never really sure if she's serious _serious_ or just messing with the audience.
      That's the whole charm of vtubing, but also its main downside: we can build a parallel world that's more believable than regular PR (lots of personal unscripted improv in vtubing makes it more credible and relatable "fr fr") and flexible (unlimited lore), but it's also threading the needle when it comes to actually _believing_ in this world, it's easy to tumble down one side of the ridge, both for the talent and the audience.
      ...
      Additionally, the 'suspension of disbelief' is quite difficult for some people (unironically the case with the spectrum🧢), and ends up replaced with the 'affirmation of belief': to immerse themselves in a fantasy world, they need to actually believe it is mostly real, otherwise they're left out of the fun.
      So vtubers are either "liars who exploit stupid gullible people, they're not reaaal! fantasy is bad!!", or "she said she loved us, but now she's on vacation with her irl friends, how could she do this to me, she BETRAYED us!".
      As much as I have sympathy for these people, we can't overly sanitize everything to appease them: they're willing to believe anything, or complain about the smallest fantasy, it will never be enough.
      And I do believe we need to experience fantasy, as cultures and societies: if we can't imagine hypothetical worlds, we're more likely to experiment invasive potentially-dangerous thoughts _in the real world_ instead of keeping it as a mental exercise.
      ...
      As for Pippa herself, having access to the Internet does not make someone informed, much the opposite _nowadays._
      Around 15 years ago, I would agree that going online would increase someone's knowledge, today it's the opposite: the noise-to-signal ratio has drastically changed, to the point that people are much more likely to be misinformed about any subject online, than positively informed. Information warfare and scammers have completely invaded the online world, while virality algorithms are actively strengthening misinformation.
      Even without someone actively trying to misguide people, misinformation wins: TikTok tips are trending up, despite being completely bonkers, because it triggers the curiosity of the ignorants, entertains the cautious people, while informed people calling such things out only reinforces the virality. The system itself rewards ignorance with popularity.
      Will Pippa start believing in the misinformation though? Entirely possible, we've seen plenty of knowledgeable people fall prey to actual paranoia and pants-on-fire conspiracies, after going through a difficult moment in their life. It could happen to anyone.
      I wouldn't worry too much about Pippa's actual mental balance yet: she still understands the difference between banters, shitposting, and actually going shizo - while her YT shorts and overall discussions about the vtubing industry show she can have a level-headed take on a subject if she needs to.
      ...
      PS: as for bad habits, specifically self-neglect, it is incredibly harder to handle your own, while it remains easy to point out what other people fail to do. I think christianity got an idiom about that, about specks and beams in someone's eyes.
      Mostly because self-neglect nearly always come along psychological issues - you never see happy, purpose-led people with trashy rooms with rotten food - so to improve the situation you would need to also confront these psychological issues simultaneously.
      There's also the mental gymnastic of balancing the need to do things orderly, with the mental angst of taking the lead in one's life.
      Things like going out of bed, taking a shower every other days, changing clothes, eating food and drinking water. When someone is experiencing severe depression, these things are actually a real mental challenge, that exhaust a lot of their energy.
      In such context, keeping your bedroom clean of dirty clothes or expired leftovers comes later down the list of priorities: even without depression, it's typical for people with any sort of fatigue to have a messy place.
      If anything, I believe having a happier, more stable Pippa will do much more to her self-discipline and hygiene, than us trying to wrangle her into acknowledging that was some crazy unhealthy stuff - even if it needs to be said at least once.
