It’s a journey of heroin addiction. The trauma of war that caused it, the euphoria of the “high” and the consequences (death). And like War Pigs, the music matches it. They are geniuses!!
Black Sabbath , almost all the lyrics in the Ozzy era were written by the bassist Geezer Butler , same with the music were Tony Iommi ' s , the guitarist , who was the sole constant and main member of the band throughout their long career started in '68 and ended in 2017 . Hail to the Sabbath !!!
geezer did the lyrics after ozzy clicked on the melody usually by singing gibberish along with whatever they were working on....pretty unusual way to go about things but works the best with these guys....black sabbath were as a unit were something else
This came out when I was a kid...wore out the vinyl, wore out another one, wore out two or three cassettes, a couple of cds, now it's on UA-cam, I'm the one that's worn out and I'm still listening to it. 50+ years and it still holds up like it just came out yesterday. Sabbath is definitely on my Mt Rushmore of rock. Geezer is the man.
The Hand of Doom is the hand you use to inject the needle into your veins.... other commenters on here have just one thing wrong they say that it is about heroin addiction when people come back from the war of Vietnam but no the heroin addiction was acquired over there in Vietnam during the war and then they came back here addicted. Note: listen to these songs After Forever and Into the Void Under the Sun Sabbath Bloody Sabbath Killing Yourself to Live Symptoms of the Universe Megalomania Johnny Blade Shockwaves
And some people are going to tell you to listen to heaven and hell or and that's with a different singer too but if you like the lyrics with Ozzy you won't like the lyrics on those two albums I just mentioned because they suck
Dude, keep it up. Love the settings. I'm 51 now and still some of my best times were sitting in my car, radio cranked up and smoking a bone. Solo with no distractions and feeling the music not just listening. Thank you
@@MarshmallowReactions I see you have given the ❤️ to some of the other comments so I'm hoping by now you do understand what the meaning of this song actually is!! If you go back and listen to it with the perspective that this is someone who is suffering from post-war PTSD and heroin addiction because of it!! Show the reason it comes back to the slow beat at the end is because the chaos he spoke about before was him on his heroin HIGH! Then he comes back down therefor the music comes back to the slow beat!! And then we basically are getting the story of him overdosing!!! He's sliding towards death!! As someone else's commented geezer Butler is responsible for probably 90% or more of the lyrics of Black Sabbath songs!! If I'm not mistaken the song "Changes" from Black Sabbath Vol 4 was written by Ozzy!! I think Bill Ward may have been responsible for one or two songs himself also lyric-wise!
If you get the chance listen to Hand of Doom with Rat Salad, it's a follow on and drum solo and it seems to depict death rattles. They're right together on the album and they really go together.
I’m glad you enjoy this song you gave great taste I kept yelling at the tv it’s about drug addiction ! lol I do have the advantage of being a fan of this band for 50 years
This is a song about people coming back from war and getting hooked on heroin to escape the nightmares. The tempo increases as the person progresses through their addiction until they die.
The hand which pushes the needle in is the hand of doom

Hand of Doom and Master of Puppets are similar. But, the faster part is being high in Doom and the slow part is being high in Master.

It's about the heroin addiction some soldiers faced coming back from the Vietnam war
The song is about heroin addiction. After the vet came home from the war.

Killing Yourself to Live
Symptoms of the Universe
Megalomania
Johnny Blade
Shockwaves

And some people are going to tell you to listen to heaven and hell or and that's with a different singer too but if you like the lyrics with Ozzy you won't like the lyrics on those two albums I just mentioned because they suck
US Soldier's in Vietnam becoming addicted to cheap Heroin.
"Wow"
It is wonderful to watch another generation discover the best band in the world.
My favorite Sabbath tune of all time! My first reaction to it was JUST like yours. Amazing composition. Beautiful.
This is a awesome classic, nothing better than hear the good ones of Sabbath in a good soundsystem.

Rap steals all the beats from the past. No originality.
Very few who don’t sample, hit boy is a goat tho!
