  • Rewriting the history of one England’s most famous love affairs.
Wallis Simpson found herself at the centre of a national scandal when she was seen to ensnare Edward VIII and lure him from the throne of England. But in this explosive film, biographer Anne Sebba sifts through a newly discovered cache of documents - shown in this film for the first time - that contains 15 secret letters written by Wallis Simpson herself around the time ofthe abdication. These extraordinary personal missives have the power to rewrite both history and our perception of Wallis. They reveal she was deeply in love with another man, and chart her fear, desperation and loneliness as she found herself becoming trapped into marrying the man who should have been king.

So, from a fun fling with a really really rich powerful man, she got stuck with a clinging, needy little boy for the rest of her life. And he had nothing to do. What a burden to amuse him, and he gave up the CROWN for her, so she felt guilty about that too.

The person whom stands out as extraordinary in this whole debacle isn't the King, nor Wallis. It was Ernest... He seemed to be amazingly kind in a pretty fucked up situation. It seems, however, it would be difficult to be too put upon or even act as if his wife was taken out from under his nose. He knew they were invited to spend time with the Prince of Wales in return for allowing the Prince to mske time with his wife.

Anne Boleyn was annulled just before her execution.
It’s semantics......some historians say divorced, others say annulled. It’s a technicality. Henry could not get a divorce through the Pope, so he broke from the Catholic Church and declared himself Head of the Church of England and had the marriages annulled.
I’d say annulled would be more accurate. It gets ridiculous when he executes two wives. I suppose he felt annulment or divorce wasn’t enough for those two.

I would like to feel sorry for these two..but I just can’t seem to muster anything up. You have a prince who was incredibly immature, had no real relationships and had probably never been in love before. She was a self absorbed woman who was born poor and wanted to show “everyone” how good she had it now. I mean...a KING!! She helped create this disaster. In the end, she knew she HAD to marry him, SHE was why he abdicated, right? A victim of her own creation.

@@lporquai9048 a few reasons why most people ( I’m not one of them ) believe that Meghan is making the decisions...Harry is known to be easily influenced , by Harry’s own words ..Meghan gets what Meghan wants and thirdly , her track record is very much one of her being in control of the relationship . I think this is what most people perceive anyway ....
as far as the UK being a “ bear pit “ ...Harry could have left years ago . He was never going to be in line to the throne once William had his son and he could easily have left then and made a life for himself . The UK is anything but a bear pit for the a royals ...Harry has access to unlimited wealth and luxury , good friends who constantly kept his exploits quiet and who were incredibly discreet . The Monarchy has great control over the press in the UK and can use damage control where necessary . The Royals have vast teams of security to watch over their every move . On the contrary, the UK is one of the safest places for Harry and his children . The UK however , was not what Meghan desired . Too restrictive , too stuffy and too old fashioned so she chose to leave ...by all accounts , it was decided before the wedding ( if the Scobie book is to be believed ) and this completes the theory that Meghan is in charge . I always though that Harry and Meghan were a lovely couple and I stand by my opinion which is that they’ve missed out on a wonderful opportunity to bring about change within the monarchy and also within the world , using their influence as Royals . They’ve sold out and have disappointed those if us who believed them during the engagement interview , when they said they were committed to their duties .

Given the number of books I've read about this couple, there's a lot more going on with them to include her husband at the time, Ernest. I find it hard to believe that a woman who has lived life pretty much by her rules suddenly felt helpless when trying to end her relationship with Edward VIII. He hated the responsibilities of being HRH and HM, but loved the perks. She was the perfect excuse to give up the throne. Wallis probably didn't start out to win HRH's heart, but Thelma Furness trusted Wallis to watch over her "little man" while she was in the US supporting her sister. Wallis had to have known how David could be when he so callously dumped Freda Dudley Ward and Thelma. Wallis loved the attention and the gifts. However, when David became more serious, she may have realized that she was in over her head. Wallis has always been strong, but she felt boxed in, especially when he became possessive and told Ernest he planned to marry her. Wallis could have simply not filed for divorce. No one forced her, and even HM couldn't make her. As for Ernest, who stands by while helping his wife to make him a cuckold? Ernest may have colluded with HM for a cash settlement. He married Mary too quickly for me to believe he was wasting any time regretting their divorce. Later, we learned about the numerous affairs both had, and the NAZI leanings. The truth is that it was a great thing for Britain that Edward VIII abdicated. No telling where Britain would be if HM were still on the throne to establish an appeasement party. HM admired Hitler and this put him at odds with his government. He was shown to be a traitor, so Britain dodged a bullet. Wallis was the sacrificial lamb for his freedom.
