I have been using Iron Wolf discs in all my NAS for years. But not the 7200rpm Pro versions! These are so loud that you can no longer operate the NAS in an office space. In a server room ok, but not near people. ⚠

I signed up for email blasts with Western Digital and sometimes they send "we miss you" coupons and I can end up getting WD Gold drives for pretty cheap, even cheaper than comparable Seagate drives sometimes. I liked the old HGST drives too, I still have several of them with over 40k hours still chuggin away. I think most brands are pretty comparable anymore for hard drives.

    What about EXOS ?

The Seagate 16TB EXOS ST16000NM001G drives use Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR) technology, not Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR). CMR drives are preferred for NAS and enterprise environments due to their better performance and reliability. Not sure why the EXOS are so inexpensive I but picked some up for $180 and they are working fine in my Synology. I'm not sure why Nick doesn't also suggest these.
