the new, faster way to backup your synology.
Synology's Hyper Backup is extremely slow when it comes to cloud backups. Today we're going to hopefully fix that with an app called Duplicacy. Let's find out if it's any good.

synology, are you seriously NOT going to fix hyper backup?!

Synology's Hyper Backup is by far the worst app they make. The insanely slow speed of cloud backups makes it unuseable for backing up important information. Let's be honest, most people don't have a spare friend who can keep a Synology at their home just for your backups (and I wouldn't want to put someone out like that) and as you know, external HDDs don't follow the 3-2-1 best practice for ba...

    great video and explanation! Question, you mentioned under control panel shared folders you need to go under advanced and select "enable data checksum for advanced data integrity". Unfortunately , I didn't select that on my shared folders. However, I have scrubbing setup successfully on my shared storage pool and it runs fine? So what is the difference between those options being checked or not checked?

    Just to add my experience with Hyper backup from Synology to Synology. It's still not fast. What I do when first time setup, is to put the two systems on the same network and configure Hyper backup on the new system to the other system. This is fast enough to have the initial backup. After that I move the new system to the other remote location and change the destination in Hyper backup. The speed is then also not fast, but luckily my incremental backups are not that big.

    Great channel! Best of all are the hi-tech 3D AI generated graphics!!!!! I use snapshots and replication. I understand that there are three partitions on every DSM disk. Two DSM OS partitions and the data partition. What I am not sure about is how or where the DSM settings (users, passwords, etc..) are stored. Is that in 'backup configuration' from the Update & Restore section? Is the only way to restore Apps and settings through Hyperbackup? I ask because I recently had a hardware issue with a volume and none of the built in repairs worked so I ended up spending a couple days resetting DSM and restoring from Hyper Backup. I now have snapshot replication setup to a 220+ so I can failover and have less down time. So, if I have another hardware issue, I will have to reinstall DSM and then failover from the 220+ back to the new setup. But I'm guessing this will not have the apps and settings reinstated because the share only has share data? With Hyperbackup you can save apps/settings with data. Do I need a DSM backup configuration restore, a Hyperbackup task with only apps (no data) followed by a failover for the shortest downtime? Thanks. Looking forward for more great content!

    So if you have, say, 4x 6TB drives in Raid 5, and you have used 12TB, why not calculate the cost and present it in your video, and also do a speed test and see how long it takes to upload 100GB. I use Veeam Community Edition myself, and the full edition a work. One of the big problems is cloud costs, and speed to move data to the cloud.

My solution is a USB 3.2 HD dock I am backing up 4x18TB drives in my 1522+ Every Sunday I drop my 10TB drives one at a time into the HD dock and I "Sync" a portion of the NAS to a 10TB drive and that takes about 5-15 minutes per depending on changes... and I place those 10TB drives in my heavy duty media rated Firesafe instead of the Cloud. (The price for 60TB of cloud storage is Insane... I could buy a complete new Synology in a couple months at those rates)

    I've been doing HyperBackup to iDrive E2 instance (s3 storage) for a few years but it's over $300/yr for 6TB and I've been hitting that in backup rotations. So I had an old Pi4 sitting on the shelf and bought a 16TB USB3 external drive and hooked it to the Pi4. Then I setup HyperBackup to do an RSync (ssh) backup from the Synology to the Pi4's external mount. I seeded the initial backup while on the same local network for a week and then took the Pi4 to my remote lake house and allowed SSH from my home network only and got it working that way. But yes, it's slow...and HB doesn't let you backup the Synology External devices (where I host my media/Plex files). Look forward to hear what Tony tells you! The speeds are extremely slow. I have a net change each night of maybe 50gb and it can take upwards of 3 to 6 hour each night to transfer.

    Glad I watched this video. I somehow overlooked enabling snapshot retention on nas boxes 2 and 3. Snapshot policies must not copy over when using a settings restore from one nas box to another under the same synology account. I swear, I'm going to need a physical binder with notes and a checklist when setting up new nas boxes from now on. There's too many things to tweak or forget about.

    Quick update: Tony, Synology's Product Manager, saw this video and reached out to me tonight. Hopefully he'll be able to provide some answers. I'll keep you guys in the loop with any updates I get from Synology. I have read all your comments, thank you! Very helpful having everyone pitch in with their own experiences. At this time I am fairly certain the issue is with the Hyper Backup software itself. I'll be posting a follow up video so stay tuned. Just to be clear: the slow backup issue seems limited to cloud backups (backups to 3rd party data centers like Amazon or Backblaze). Synology to synology and USB backups are not affected.

    • @tonyjev
      @tonyjev Місяць тому

      Thanks. My backup was Synology 224+ DSM 7 to Synology, 212j DSM 7 and it was much slower than Synology 215j DSM 6 to Synology, 212j DSM 7. All connections are gigabit. I cancelled and deleted the backup, went through all the settings for new backup process, and found that encryption was turned ON. That might be the default as it is not something I would have enabled. I turned that off, and nothing else to change. Rebooted the NAS to clear everything. Now the speed has improved from about 5 MB/sec to 15-16 MB/sec. This is a marked improvement but it will take about 3-4 days to backup my 4.5 TB of data. I am able to live with this, knowing that the subsequent incremental backups will be much faster, but I can not imagine how those with > 10TB can deal with slow speed.

    It’s a fundamental design flaw in the deduplication built into the software… it starts off quickly when there are a small number of files copied, but as the database grows, it’s constantly reading the database to determine if it’s already got a copy of the file,land if it has it then needs to record where the additional files are stored… add compression and an encryption key and it adds further processing that will make it even slower…. I gave up on this software, it’s not fit for purpose and the same issue applies with local USB connected drives or locally mapped network SMB shares

    I think it depends on where you're backing up to, and where their datacenters are. I have two different destinations, Storj and Backblaze B2. For reference, I am located in the SF Bay Area. In Storj, I can achieve 15+ MB/s consistently. They're a distributed storage network with an S3 interface. On Backblaze B2, I can only really get up to 6 MB/s, their coldest datacenter is in Sacramento (although it may go to Phoenix). Backblaze support says they're built for multithreaded uploads/downloads, which seems to track for other people. I also tried Synology C2 on the Seattle datacenter yesterday and couldn't get above 5 MB/s. This is the part they have most control over, and they can definitely do better.

I've set up one user with SD client to see if it can replace dropbox (which is bulletproof but costs money). There isn't a month where there hasn't been at least three or more issues with syncing. No easy ways to diagnose why, how to fix them, and the ui if the client is terrible. So far I don't see how it can replace db, and that was one of the top reasons why I wanted to get synology for the company.
