Buchla TipTop + Strymon Starlab // More than just blipblops

  • I wanted to be more regular with the uploads, but it turned out life always gets in the middle.
    But here we are: the most analog waves coming from the Buchla by TipTop Audio lineup crashing against the digital Strymon Starlab shore.
    The setup is comprised of a double 258t (oscillator), one of which is producing the chords you've heard at the beginning, while the other is on modulation duty.
    The main interest of the patch was going into the Starlab already in stereo, so the two channels of the 257t are used as mixers between Left Osc + Sum and the other Right Osc + Sum, in order to have stereo bouncing around more as an accent, rather than being too abrupt, all of this controlled by the S/H coming from the other oscillator going into the 266t.
    The infamous 292t gets to work both as a summing mixer and a normal VCA.
    The extra two voices you hear (the higher one and the very low one) are from the oscillators used for the S/H process, which I tuned to be useful twice too!
    Hope you'll enjoy it! 🧡

    The Buchla voice and the massive reverb gives instant Cortini vibes.

    Excellent excellent work. I can appreciate the restraint or focus, what with all the options of an open ended setup like this.

      That's exactly what I like about these old (inspired) modules.
      They can be so much "everything" that sometimes it's even hard to go past a few analog farts.
      But when you lock in, and you start seeing the direction unfolding, that's a beautiful moment, and I'm glad it came out as a beautiful record too!

      I agree completely, even though sometimes I miss the possibility to use two rows in series and have 10 steps, or even run different lanes at different speeds.
      Well, I guess I have to buy another 245t 😄

    Oh I like this a lot! Beautiful sound textures, especially that background string type drone and all so dramatic with great movement into different spaces! Great fun to be able to see what you are doing. You seem totally familiar with and in control of your synth setup.... i.e. controlled improvisation, not just random happenstance that sounds good.

    • @Dexba
      @Dexba  6 місяців тому +1

      Honored, thank you so much!
      I love the fact that everything is on the panel, with these modules. They're very tactile by design, so yeah, I usually rehearse the "path of interactions" for about half an hour and then press record, to strike the right balance between improvisation and knowing my way through them.
      Controlled improvisation, as you very well said 🧡

    I love when someone take these modules and do real music, not just experimental cacophony! These modules sound great and I love your video.

    • @Dexba
      @Dexba  8 місяців тому +2

      Thank you so much! And I completely agree: while I am the first to love experimentation and cacophony (mostly as an exercise, but still), I always found it a bit strange that the Buchla world seemed to focus just on that, seemingly ignoring anything more melodic, and that's a shame since the sound is beautiful and the capability is there!

    • @korsmakolnikov
      @korsmakolnikov 8 місяців тому

      @Dexba you are completely right. The 258t sounds fat. More than my Roland 512 and I love transitioning between sine and square. I used it with an A-106-5 SEM filter... Instant synthwave, I swear 😂
      The buchla system is capable of infinite possibilities, for those who own the sequencer and the source of uncertainty like you at least (I own only 281t and 258t in my case that is mostly Roland based). I think most people want to express the potential of this system. But the system sounds actually very good. It's a pity.

    I might get a Buchla TipTop and the Straymon combo, but not sure the two Straymons overlap in function. This patch would not have that deep ambience with those two effects. Im bookmarking this to try and duplicate it with the description provided although i realize there's more to it than is on the surface. Great soundscape. Thanks for sharing 🎉🎉🎉

    • @Dexba
      @Dexba  8 місяців тому +1

      Strymon is undeniably at the top of the game, in the FX sector.
      I tried going for the Magneto first, but with this patch it quickly got too busy, so I resorted to the Starlab.
      I don't see them overlapping too much in fuctions, but in a way they are kinda mutually exclusive, in the sense that they are so... present/bold, that using both of them is usually too much to handle.
      I would say that for something like the Buchla TipTop lineup a more straightforward and less HP-hungry FX module could be more than sufficient, something like the MFX by ALM or even the Pico one, which has a surprisingly good delay algorithm :)
      In any case: thank you so much, and if you need any help or simply want to exchange some ideas about the patching, I'm here (or on Instagram) 🧡

    • @Dexba

      This could be a nice way to taste the (old) Buchla world!
      Simpler module units that makes you think a bit more in order to reach specific results.
      Probably a bit more even compared to Doepfer, since Doepfer has a module for everything, so you could potentially "buy your way" into a patch :)

    I’m an experimental sound designer but I do appreciate the far move away from standard west coast enthusiast lack of effects and filters etc..

    • @Dexba
      @Dexba  3 місяці тому

      I feel the same.
      Granted, most of the more experimental stuff I play doesn't end up on UA-cam (unfortunately they don't do that well), but I always found silly the religious division between West and East Coast, especially because it easily ends up being more a religious thing rather than a technical thing, and I see instruments mostly as tools for MY expression, not someone else's agenda.
      I am glad this came through with this piece, and a new one (the one featured in the Modular World TipTop/Buchla video) will follow soon 🧡

    • @corticallarvae
      @corticallarvae 3 місяці тому

      I put up experiments in intermedia that are modular driven …. I hide in the over- saturation. People don’t generally understand why i do thing… but context destroys.. I was complementing you for annihilating notions… we apparently agree about such things
