@@marissaurias5116 Oh they get plenty of credit. The social stigma against male dancers needs to be addressed but male dancers are paid more than female dancers, valued more than female dancers, and they don’t have to stave themselves to make it like the women do. I hope the gender disparity in the ballet world is addressed in this series. I was a professional ballerina and when my partner screwed up in rehearsal and injured me, the company fired me instead of him. Gender inequality is a huge issue in the dance world.

More media telling the story that all dance is a competition, that the teachers are ruthless, that the students are egotistical, that physical prowess is the only important trait? Bad.

Lots of children have the body but not the spirit for it.
I had the spirit but definitely not the body. Back in the early 1970's, my darling, amazing, incredible ballet teacher had the tough conversation with me about exactly that. At 12 years old my dream came to an end that day. I continued to take ballet classes up to the age of 22. At 22 my back issues really kicked in and I sadly had to find an alternative form of exercise. I admire all dancers/athletes, it's a huge amount of hard work and dedication. All I can say to the young people out there don't give up and fight for your dream. 💖

standards re: the ballet body are as much about practicality as they are about aesthetics. An obese dancer will never be as agile, flexible, or easy to lift as a thinner one. A too tall one will again be hard to lift. Too short and they will stand out in the corps.

She said that when she gained a little weight, she wasn’t even over 100 pounds, that’s how underweight she was. And yet, the people she was dancing with, told her she needed to lose weight. It’s not about practicality. It’s completely unreasonable.
