ATTENTION!!!! This is completely normal for a pro ballerina. BUT I don’t recommend breaking the shoes this much for a beginner. Pro’s go thru so many a week they need to be broken in a soon as they get them but that also means that’s don’t last as long. If your a beginner and only doing a couple classes a week, DONT DO THIS!! So that your shoes can last a long time. U will naturally break them in.
I'd say a little breaking-in, even for a beginner, can help. I took up pointe class again last year, I was fitted for the right pair for my feet, then I banged my shoes just a bit, breaking the shank a little so that it curves nicely and gives me a little more flexibility to go on demi-pointe. I also asked my teacher how much I could soften the box, and she told me how far I could go. Pointe shoes are not exactly comfortable, and even a non professional (I only take one pointe class a week) needs to adapt them. A brand new, hard shank will allow you to go up but will not have that nice curve that allows you to get on the tip of your toes yet have the support of the shank. But I may be atypical, I returned to ballet class at 58, after a 40 years interruption, and had 13 years of prior training. So I kind of knew what to do, and most of all how I wanted my shoes to feel. And even for a 75 minutes class, the time I spent prepping my pointes was well spent. I finished the class and even managed an équilibre ! Of course my feet hurt for 2 days, but I still went back the next week. Edit : during my last pointe class, june 29th 2021, my teacher asked me if I had a lot of experience on pointe, because "your position is very good, your feet look great, perfectly balanced on the tip" ! Which pleased no end, since pointes were never my forte when I was younger, and I hadn't gone on pointes in 40 years ! And the compliment came from a professional dancer and teacher with a rather impressive curriculum. So ladies (and gentlemen !) whatever your age and experience with ballet, if it's something you want to try, do it ! You may not like it, but you may also truly love it.
I love the peaceful music in the background as she just slaps the wall 😂 Also dang that’s a lot didn’t know I had it so easy with my plain canvas shoes

You get used to it after a while. You build up callouses which stop it hurting as the skin on your feet hardens. The worst part is when you have an ingrown toenail and have to dance on it
You'd think that a shoe made on purpose for one specific dance would be way more ergonomic and adaptable. Amazing! The amount of patience ballerinas have is admirable.
They would have to be made specifically for each dancer, and that would be impossible to do. Some of the more famous professionals have special shoes made for them I think. But they still have to break them in

Peachykeen It’s called breaking in their shoes, it’s so the shank and box will support them better. For amateur ballet dancers, they don’t usually break in their pointe shoes, because they will do the same with time. This process (breaking in) is to ensure they (the professional dancers) get the most out of their shoes, although that means that the pointe shoes would die faster.

Thank you for the video Olivia. I am only an amateur and took classes as an adult at university for a few years until i developed a medical condition that took all the joy out of my life. 14 years later- I am seeing you and even though it might seem minor your echappes, passe retires are beautiful and clean. Wishing u the best in the future x
actually her feet are soley based on how much she bends the shoe and her pointe , second skin and paper towels are there so she doesnt get blisters i dance in nyc on pointe daily:)
A lot of ballerinas actually cut the shank off completely. Also her shoe made dents in the wall. Love that. Imagine it's like a recreation center and the basketball players nextdoor hear this loud thundering noise coming from the other side and the coach is just like "It's just the ballet. Don't worry." If I didn't know as much I do about ballet I would be scared of ballerinas 😂
I dance for approximately 8 hours a day, and just to clarify, 3 pairs of shoes a day are a lot for any dancer. Freeds (which are what most NYCB dancers wear coming out of SAB) break down extremely fast because they are only made with traditional materials. Russian Pointes or Gaynor Minden shoes (which Gillian Murphy wears) can, however, last much longer. BUT, not all dancers can wear all brands of shoe. I cannot wear Grishkos because they are too tapered for my foot and the platform is too small, and most dancers run into size discrepancies with brands. However, Freed does make custom shoes for NYCB since they sponsor them, but the materials will break down faster (which doesn't really matter when you're not the one paying for them).
Slightly off topic, but since you were talking brands, have you heard of Siberan Swan yet? Apparently a new brand for pointes, founded by pro dancers. Would be nice to find out how they holf up compared to the others. Freeds and Blochs absolutely don't work for me, personally, but I found a pair of Grishkos that's pretty nice. Guess I'm just too curious to stick with something that works for me. (If it ain't broken...)
@@fritzholm3345 Imagine putting on sneakers and then standing on the tip if your toes(with more support obviously) but there is no folding of anything involved. When you first start out your muscles are still weak but with time and practice the muscles become a lot stronger and it becomes easier to dance this way (at least thats how it was for me).
I love seeing Black Ballerinas represented and highlighted!!! LOOOOOVVVE this video. I wish her much success in her career. She is an inspiration to all Black girls aspiring to become ballerinas.
Terra Gray Girl what ..? 😭lmao ballet is simply a form of dance, anybody of any ethnicity can practice it, the same way even though hip-hop is a music genre and form of dance created by Black Americans, anybody is free to rap / or practice hip-hop dancing 💀💀. This is a harmless comment stop trying to create a problem where there isn't one -_-.
We can put people on the moon but we can't make a ballet shoe that lasts longer than 2-3 days and wouldn't cripple the ballet world with its strangery.
as horrible as they are they absolutely HAVE to be gross and stiff so the weight of the body can be supported on other things than the toes :( i totally agree its horrible they wear out so quickly and they're painful to wear but as a ballet dancer of almost 15 years i also respect what my pointe shoes do for me 😆
LMAO I love how there is a designated spot for the dancers to bang their shoes against the wall so that they don't end up putting dents in all parts of the wall and all of the dents are corelated to a singular area. It makes for easier repair in the future in case the dents cave in.
I watched a ballet documentary and its insane how many shoes they go through! I would have thought ballet shoe companies would make shoes to last longer and resist the constant wear!
Makes me think of my mother who is a hiker. I bought an identical pair of shoes to her and they've lasted me almost 3 years. They barely lasted her 2 weeks. Normal people just don't get the wear that pros put on their equipment.
wow her feet look amazing for a ballerina i’m a gymnast and my feet are constantly bruised and blistered and all veiny but hers are like immaculate lmao
Her feet are the same as yours, the melanin just hides varicose veins and surface bruising. It also looks like she takes additional conscious care of her toes to avoid the typical dancer/gymnast ugly foot syndrome.
Jewelzbabiii guys let me be offended.... Shut up. No one said you cant. But they have to be more serious than any little thing that shows up on white people - love a black person.
Not EVERY ballerina will "torture" her shoes before wearing them. Your shoe becomes the most comfortable after some wear (any shoe, really). There is that "sweet spot" where it's worn enough to mold to your foot but not so dead that it becomes cumbersome to wear. For every ballerina that "sweet spot" is where she feels the most comfortable. When practicing for a show or dancing that show you want to be in the most comfortable point of your shoe. That is why, by all of the bending, breaking, twisting etc. she is MIMICKING that initial stage of naturally breaking your shoes in. But since she is starting from that "sweet spot", the shoes can only deteriorate from there and they last a day or two. Ballerina dancing for a company has an unlimited amount of shoes so she doesn't have to worry about costs etc. For a regular dancer, who has to buy their own shoes it looks different. The whole "breaking" ritual would happen naturally as you attend classes. Of course, there is always something that you will do at the beginning, squishing the box, cutting the shank etc. but it's nowhere near the extend shown on the video. The way she is prepping her shoes is very much a thing and a ton of dancers do it. I just wanted to point out that it is not a case for every single ballerina out there :)
I was surprised when I see her smashing the shoes.....I only can thing "Crazy!! Those are expensive!!" XD I almost choke hearing the "cracks"....😫 But, I do the "powder glue" thing...and I def put waaay more protection on my toe fingers.
I’ve seen a lot of ballerinas do stuff to break in their shoe/to make it fit their foot better. I thought it was about making the line look better? Like I’ve seen a few ballerinas full on cut half of the shank out
I remember my mum got upset when I did all those things to the new pointe shoes she paid for as a gift for my first performance. I had to explain it was all so that I can wear them to dance and she was like "why is ballet so violent" 😂 I only wore them once for a really short period of time and framed the shoes once I quit, and she looked happy everytime she saw the shoes lol
A dent is a dent no matter how you make it. Stop being ridiculous. You obviously don't own any property or you'd understand. Some people like to have nice things. Your house must be trashy if you think that's ok.
@@carmenshi1919 We use them on our shoes so we don't slip. Satin can be very slippery especially with new shoes. And on marley or wood floors that are specific to let us turn and jump rosin helps us avoid a lot of falls. A lot of the time rosin isn't used normally during the year, but during performances in actual theatres it's common for a box of crushed rosin to be on the floor for us to stick our shoes in
@@sarracampbell you rub it onto your bow; since bows are made of horse hair, they won’t make a sound normally. it’s just rubbing hair on some strings. but once you add the rosin, it helps create friction on the hair and strings, therefore creating the sound. when dancing, satin can be very slippery and that’s what most ballet shoes are made out of, other than canvas. so rosin does the same thing: creates friction so the dancers don’t slip. it’s like putting chalk on your hands in gymnastics to grip onto the bars better. :)
im ngl im surprised how her feet are still so beautiful even being a pro dancer. when she was putting on her second skin i was expecting her feet to look like it's gone through a lot more
Yeah I’m not even a professional I go to the studio six times a week and we aren’t allowed to get our toes done it’s kind of surprising to see her with hers
It’s because she’s wearing the right kind of shoes for her feet. If you get professionally fitted for point shoes, your feet won’t look like a hot mess even if you’re dancing for hours every day.
Ballet is just basically : - 30 % being graceful - 18 % nutcrackers and swans - 2 % tutus - 20 % crafting - 40 % suffering and pain Edit: tHaNkS fOr aLl tHe LiKeS! Nah jkjk i just wanted to say for all those that are commenting "110%?" Its an honest mistake, im human. Stop bashing me for it. Btw i have dyscalculia.
Give this girl and all the ballet dancers some credit by all the effort they have to make for performing adequately, yet while dancing, not showing any sign of pain 😅 Really impressive work 👏👏👏 cheers to them 😌👌👌👌
As a ballerina when the studio gets new point shoes we have a thirty minutes “class” where we sew our shoes and fricken break the walls by banging them. It’s probably my favorite class
She is a beautiful ballerina. Wow, customizing her shoes. I remember going to a ballet and hearing the hard "wood" noise from the ballerina shoes. It was very distracting. I love ballet. I wish I had learned it when I was young. But it takes alot of dedication. ❤ ❤
Either she destroys the shoes or the shoes destroy her feet and performance. From what I’ve heard whether they get destroyed or not they won’t last long so might as well be comfy in them. lol.
Think of them as disposable shoes. They only last a short time and the average ballerina goes through a lot of pairs every year. When you get them initially they’re rigid and non-personalized, so the process of “destroying” them isn’t actually destroying them, it’s just making them individualized for each ballerina. Flexing them in certain places, adding straps in specific spots, making them work with that ballerina’s specific foot shape and arch. Every ballerina has their own ritual for making them exactly right. It’s super interesting!
My mother was a student of ballet as a child. It was never an option for me. I never understood why until friends who took ballet danced en pointe. My mother was concerned that ballet would ruin my feet. I did study ballet as an adult, and enjoyed it a great deal. One of the students in my classes was an older dancer. She said that I had "great feet". I laughed, and asked what she meant. "If you had been my student, I'd have encouraged you to continue your studies. Most students don't have perfect feet. You do. You would have done well en pointe." When I told my mother, she told me that she knew that, and she didn't want me to be "bound" to ballet like some of her dance class mates. My mom didn't have good memories, so I never got the chance as a child. I was a good dancer as an adult. I never was good enough to dance en pointe.

ballet dancers are hardcore as heck! like as soon as they get their new shoes, they get to work on destroying them so they can wear them!
Thank you! I do pointe and it's nice to hear this. A lot of people don't consider ballet to be a sport, but I do.

Probably needs 3 pairs a day for performance days. Can't really perform on stage with dirty/busted shoes.
That's true. I have skinny feet I can't even look at Bloch shoes lol I where Russians
How do you "place" your toes inside these shoes? I have been wondering about that. Do you kind of fold your toes in under your foot or?
@@fritzholm3345 Imagine putting on sneakers and then standing on the tip if your toes(with more support obviously) but there is no folding of anything involved. When you first start out your muscles are still weak but with time and practice the muscles become a lot stronger and it becomes easier to dance this way (at least thats how it was for me).

Magdalena C this was super interesting, thank you!
Same I would never do that to my shoes bc I have to make them last for at least a few months I would kill for free shoes😂
Magdalena C same! I was cringing when she was doing all her breaking in techniques because if I did that my shoes wouldn't last more than a week!
I was surprised when I see her smashing the shoes.....I only can thing "Crazy!! Those are expensive!!" XD
I almost choke hearing the "cracks"....😫
But, I do the "powder glue" thing...and I def put waaay more protection on my toe fingers.

@@carmenshi1919 We use them on our shoes so we don't slip. Satin can be very slippery especially with new shoes. @@sarracampbell you rub it onto your bow; since bows are made of horse hair, they won’t make a sound normally. it’s just rubbing hair on some strings. but once you add the rosin, it helps create friction on the hair and strings, therefore creating the sound.

She actually broke the wall
I’m sure what she’s doing to the shoe will make it easier for her to dance but as a non dancer all I’m seeing is the destruction of the shoes
Either she destroys the shoes or the shoes destroy her feet and performance. From what I’ve heard whether they get destroyed or not they won’t last long so might as well be comfy in them. lol.
They customize them so they can bend in them and get up on their toes. Not easy if you have a hard shoe, it needs to be more flexible
But to a dancer, it's totally relatable.
