There’s a great saying that applies to a lot in life including deer hunting. Prior planning prevents piss poor performance. That’s my logic I apply for summer scouting.

I went in to hang a stand the first weekend of September 2022 and while holding the stand I had a mature buck hop up and stand 30 yds away from me. Two months later I sat the stand and he came in pushing a doe and stopped in almost the same exact spot. Ended up taking him that day.
we scout in the summer but to be honest, I've gotten to the point in my life to realize it means very little come hunting season. Deer's diet and needs change throughout the course of the year. Scouting in the summer is also , in our area, the time of the year when standing crops are at the best they'll be and top of the deers diet. Come hunting season, those crops change or are even off the fields. I can't count how many years I've gotten giddy and excited in hopes of seeing these big bucks during season and we rarely ever do. Now we normally use cameras to monitor new spots in our bushes, areas that we are thinking of moving stands to.. still fun to do, I won't lie there.
I do literally one day of work on the farm I have permission on. I go in, I change battrees, I swap out cards, I clear anything that is impeding my stands / shooting lanes, and I get out. I'd rather have a general idea of what's in the area and who used the property last year, and be surprised, than be constantly worrying about finding the biggest deer. I learned the really hard way after waiting on two different deer for three years in a row, that never showed, that I need to make decisions based on a couple of rules-of-thumb and not because a deer isn't a specific "target buck". 1) at least 8 points and outside the ears 2) his belly should be AT LEAST in a straight line from the elbow to the knee. If the belly doesn't swing up, he's an older deer. 3) Does before, and after, 10/31--11/14. Those two weeks are buck only. It's made hunting SO much more enjoyable.
Yup I scout when my season is over. If I'm tagged earlier then I go scout after if I tag later I go in January or December I live in Michigan so it's pretty chilly and thick snow but those beds tend to be where they are in October it seems like. Follow the food.
Once again awesome content that absolutely doesnt apply to us Florida hunters. The vegetation thats here now in July will still be there in November, for the most part. Not all of it obviously, but lots. Also my opening day this year is August 3rd, 26 days from now!!!! Its here boys!! Our scouting needs to be done in May -june.
For years I always went in to change or check cams…before I got cell cams. But we tried to always scout in the rain…to wash our scent out. Or right before it rained knowing it will wash away soon after.

I can recall the tracking dog folks saying that rain actually helps keep the scent trapped in the ground/area and is better for the dogs to get the scent trail. I’d assume this applies to deer noses as well.
@@troutstew7346. It depends on how hard it rains. Light rain helps them smell stuff better, but heavy rains wash everything out.
I scout in the rain bc the black Flys horse Flys will carry me away
i have also heard that scent actually attaches to and is magnified by water molecules, as well
Summer scouting is essential! Completely changed the hunting game for me.

I scout some areas, some I’ve known for a very long time and know the routes. But I do like to scout!!! And any time I’m in the woods is a good time.
I agree with any time in the woods is a good time! I don't have a problem scouting in the summer, I like to scout at other times of the year more. I don't get all freaked out, about upping a buck, in his bedding area or private zone. As long as I don't do it consistently. I firmly do not believe they give two s****, if we walk through and jump them up in the summer. Might change their pattern for a week or two but, they'll be right back at it. As long as you don't do it consistently I think it's fine.
Year round here. Live on the property I hunt. After a couple decades of living amongst our local herd there is always something new to learn. With that said my property is not big ag like most of the summer range so I don’t hold hardly any bucks till late September. There is always a very dramatic change in the local deer and I start seeing bucks from the past fall/winter. Out of over 50 bucks harvested I probably have only 3 or 4 velvet pics of deer I’ve shot. I’m fine with it this way, my plots draw in deer once the ag fields are tilled.
I did a lot of that type scouting in the mid to late 80s. Got burned a couple times, but normally it paid big dividends. Of course, the one and only time I ever entered a "big buck pool" was one of my monumental failures!
Long time no hear! Hell yes it's a year round deal. Running cameras, staying till dark in July. Hope you guys put out more vedios. I'm sure I'll catch the next batch soon.

If you have areas that u hunt every year and know the lay of the land well enough and have a relatively good fix on how the deer use it sometimes its not as necessary to scout areas like that more than once or twice before season just to see what the sign looks like and to see if the deer are still using it on regular basis, and in the hardwoods i pay attention to the masscrop like acorns to see if there plentiful or far and few between that year
Great information to chew on. Back in the day, I would've scouted an area only once, for scent control. Nowadays, I just buy property and plant food plots...😂 Love what ya'll are doing 😊
Firstly I enjoy watching your channel I learn a lot.
Last fall we decided that running out of bait wasn’t an option because the previous year we ran out and deer went to the bait elsewhere. So last fall we made a point of topping up the bait with a few bags of beets and apples the weekend prior to the deer opener in our area. We used my CFMoto UForce 600 that I drove right up the small bait pile to drop the bait off. Then one the day before the opener I added a bag of beets to the pile. Opening morning at 10am I saw a big body forkhorn in one of my lanes. A quick text to my friend and he said shoot it. As I got my Tikka 7mm-08 I looked to my left in my other lane a nice 8 pointer was standing there. He stood there eating for 14 minutes before he gave me a broadside shot and I got him. I guess it depends on the deer they make mistakes. Both bucks showed up in my lanes a day after I checked my stand.
I am mostly depressed all year but feel a lot of happiness about 1.5 months before season that carries through til I fill my tags, then there's a huge happiness dump and depression floods back in terribly.

@@matthewwichtner2935 I fished for several years pretty hard, now that I have a family and live about 35 mins from a lake, it's harder to do. Many hobbies but I go through time-frames of not wanting to do any of them. I get burnt out I guess. Anyways, thanks for dropping a line
My nephew and I scouted a new public hunting spot on September 1st a few years ago. Completely walked it out. I knew from scouting there was a good buck in there from the sign. On October 11th my nephew shot a big 12 point in that area.

I always go out during the summer and check every thing at my huntin spot and ive been out their doing stuff for 3 or 4 days in a row with out any issues and it doesnt even bother them do to me being out their so mutch because theor use to my sent and i had a doe get within 15 to 20 feet away from me before she saw me and they still come back and doing checks on your sets is fine
Here in Ga at least the places I hunt deer seem to act differently on different properties as far as bumping them. Some properties the deer will be back the next day comfortable as can be. On others if bump them they'll be 2 county over and you won't see em for a week or two. I do believe in certain areas deer have different personalities as well.
Summer is a good time to find the community scraps I’ve usually find some that’s used all year long and a well used trail is easier to find in thick cover , the ticks are a lot worse this year for some reason ✌🏻👍🇺🇸

I always scout throughout the whole season, whether its end of summer, mid summer or fall... i never have an issue. If youre just walking through the deer will come back to that spot... ive never had an issue. I scout whenever im in the woods pretty much. Things change throughout the season because the hunting population changes...

I think it all depends on the area you hunt . Where I hunt in California there is a decent amount of hikers and campers in the area as soon as the road opens up in late spring early summer . So the deers are used to people and hikers passing through . That being said we have scouted a few weekends before the opening of archery and the bucks would be in the same areas throughout the whole season so it didn’t make a difference if we spooked them or went into bedding areas . That being said it was also a good tuneup to hike and get our bodies used to the elevation (9,200ft) before the season started . But we’ve also been busy and not scouted at all and still had success. If I was hunting an area that the deers weren’t used to people I would def not push them or scout before the season though

I tend to defer to the methods that you gentlemen recommend, given that your group is so successful in varied states and at different times of the year. The areas that I am scouting in Wisconsin are so thick right now, it is like being in the jungles of Panama (not really, and especially not the mangrove swamps). Am I having a flashback? Anyway, good luck this fall and thanks for the continued good advice.

Hey THP I love the videos first of all!!! Now I have a question, why can't I find (watch) the episode 68/69 of Deer Tour '19?
Here in N. Idaho, summer scouting has plus and minus benefits. The big thing is the deer will not be in summer range when we rifle hunt in November, they will be moving toward winter range depending on the weather. Summer scouting get us in shape, see what changes have happened in the public land, learn trails, roads, forest fire effects etc. So it is good overall but not like maybe more agriculture land.

Any scouting is a good thing. I just would never scout "in season" unless it's raining or your very quick about it
I agree with Jim reyser, any day out in the woods is a good day. And I don't think there's any problem with scouting at that time. As long as I don't do it consistently. Everything changes by fall. They get spooked here or there, don't see it as a big deal. You can still learn something, that's what it's all about, learning. You might run into a big fella you didn't know was around. Or something, anything, that might help you in the fall. I just would not make it something you do weekly or even monthly. Better off glassing from a vehicle, or even getting in a tree and glassing for a couple hours. If it's something you're going to do consistently, weekly, or along them lines.
The bucks are scent checking for eye gland scent. They rub there eyes glands on licking branches. Thats what ive been told at least

One trip in if possible before August get stands hung and pruned - once I saw cell cam reaction shots day ya set em up shows ya they miss nothing and imagine a 180”

Too early where I hunt, bucks don't visit till October..problem with hunting small parcels in NC. I set up stands in August to give deer time to adjust

i use summer scouting in a different way maybe. Most of the scouting I do is in season or first snow melt in spring to see all the sign made in the fall. I live in ME and we can't really do much scouting for deer that are totally in summer areas. They move so much from late August to middle to end of Sept that you can be all over deer in mid August only to have them move 3miles away mid Sept. In the summer I will go into places i'd marked in the fall/early spring and pick a tree or setup a stand site knowing i'm not gonna hurt anything 6-8 weeks before the season. We do a little bit of spotting for fun in the summer with the kids after a hot summer day and put out a few cams on fields and crossings to see whats growing in the area however like i said our bucks move so much in that late summer early fall that truly you can have 5-6 quality bucks hitting a clover field together all summer only to lose all but 1 or 2 early fall. We've had bucks in one field all summer before only to have them pop up on cams in late Sept early Oct 5-6 miles away. They really tend to break up and move to primary home areas once the velevt sheds.

they'll come back a couple times after being spook, its the repeated times that conditions them. i think some guys cant come to terms with the fact that deer have separate summer and fall ranges. makes them think they spooked off that beauty in velvet they got 1000 pics of over the summer, when in reality he shifted from summer to fall range.

Depends in my opinion if it helps or hurts.In a public setting where many people go through the year its common to deer to get bumped.In very remote or large private property it can cause a big shift in where they bed or travel.jmho
One thing we need to know that Der are spooked from thier bedding areas from predators like coyotes or other natural things so it not just humans

as a dog hunter i can tell you its harder to push bucks from an area than you think. we can run the same spot every weekend and jump the same deer most of the time, including big bucks, until we get the kill. had one we ran every Saturday. jumped same spot but as we learnwd his escape pattern and shut down the spot he would change his route. never did get him that season.
if they spook from you and get away it builds their confidence in how good that spot is to detect the threat coming and the ability to get safely away. amd this is in the middle of high pressure hunting

Deer are not causing corn crop damage if the staulks are pulled down. That is raccoons. Raccoons and Sandhill Cranes do way more crop damage than deer.
Scout when you can, hunt when you can. Most folks that aren't retired only have a limited time to go. CRP type areas that Zack killed this buck in can be gold mines for success, but can also be a nightmare to track and find your animal after the shot. You can also get lost out in large fields of weeds above your head. Early season spray down or it is going to be death by chigger.

What about the thick south? Their ranges are so tight and small in the summer.
Here's a question/ statement back in the year 1990 my father was hunting a farm in PA and there were 3 other hunters who didn't have any wood sense they jumped a big ten he went nocturnal last week of Archery a truck hit him . Not sure on bumping buck I try to stay away from bedding areas and just glass food sources.

Okay so I need help here. I got three trail cameras that just came in and I need to put them out. My food plot always has those in it and it's right next to a bedding area and the food plots in the corner of a field. How would you lay them out?
Set one inside the wood edge a parallel trail, set the other two on the field edges. Looking into the food plot. Make sure to keep track of wind direction, day and time on buck pics . Go in early season and kill your buck.

Throw a mock scrape just this side of the bedding on field edge. Use a vine about chest high. That camera will serve 2 purposes
Deer don’t read the rule book unfortunately and they do what they want. However, from past experience, I’ve found summer and even very early fall patterns far different from the rut and winter patterns when I do most of my hunting. That said, I don’t bother much in summer. Besides, the chiggers will eat you alive near me.
hey, so I’m a new time Hunter and I’ve looked up videos. I’ve talk to people like on like how to hunt in like different hunting styles but really people just told me like what I should buy and I should go on public land, which is all very nice and stuff, but I already have all my gear, but I don’t really know any like hunting techniques or anything like tracking so if you guys could help me that would be awesome
I think the reason most bowhunters worry about "overscouting" during pre-season is that, sure, I'll blow the deer out of this parcel, but they'll be back tomorrow. But if I'm doing it, there's probably eleventeen other guys doing the same thing. Eventually all that human presence _must_ push the deer out of the area right? The answer is....maybe...but you'll never know how much human presence is in an area until you go in there and look for it. Cameras, stands, cigarette butts, empty water bottles, thermacell cartridges, boot tracks...half the time I'm scouting for humans more than I'm scouting for deer!
If you don't know, just go. When in doubt, scout it out 👍👍
I tell people that my deer season begins in July when I start summer scouting.
I don't think leaving your scent in an area and not going back to hunt it until a month and hlf two months later is going to effect anything when it comes to spooking deer. A few days or upcoming weeks is a different story but your scent is going to be long gone after month or so later, your scent will be washed away within hours or days depending when it rains next

Why in the world would you be in a tree in October with no tags?
Some states you have to wait for your tags to come in the mail. these guys do this as a full time job it’s how they make a living. so I’m assuming they got to the state they were going to hunt & had to wait for their tags. So they chose to do an observation sit, far enough away to see if the bucks were still using the area if not they can’t move on so they aren’t wasting days away chasing deer that relocated a mile or more away.
Being in the tree doing an observation sit on a property your unfamiliar with is much better than sitting at home watching tv in my opinion.

I would say yes if you don’t have any intel in that area, yes summer scouting can be beneficial, but ideally I like to put on the miles Jan-April, and whichever areas I find the best sign at, I put cams at and monitor those for the season. Then hunt where I am getting the action. Usually I find both spots that are good for early season and rut phases, and a few that are good for both.
Never had a problem scouting. Deer smell humans all the time. Deer just naturally change their patterns. Never had a instance where I spooked bucks out of the area I hunted

Deer categorize humans as predators, no different than a coyote or bobcat. Cities and bobcats work through deer bedding areas frequently, it will drive the game out, but only for a short period, usually not more than 24 hours.
As long as you’re not going into these areas frequently enough to permanently drive out larger game, it will be ok.
People really believe deer pack bags and move towns when they see people 😂

These guys do it the hard way like Tred Barta. They don't want it the way that gated farms have it . They're proving that it's much more rewarding to set behind a buck that is public, therefore much harder to kill than a gated farmbuck that walks beside a box blind.
SPOOKING a buck and SURPRISING a buck each result in different outcomes. A buck that gets SPOOKED will likely return as he knows that that particular bedding spot worked well for him as he had advanced warning that a hunter was approaching. A buck that gets SURPRISED at close range will often vacate that bedding area as it didn't give him advanced warning that a hunter was approaching. I tend to not sneak around while summer scouting because I believe that the deer that I SPOOK will have confidence that that bedding area gives good advanced warning of trouble and therefore they will return within a few days and continue using that bedding spot.

Unfortunately what’s happening on public land, enough people start doing this and the mature animals start relocating to adjacent private tracts with lower human pressure. The plethora of information, technology available nowadays and cellphones with OnX, BaseMap, Huntstand, SpartanForge… make this extremely easy to do now.

Well. April there are mushroom hunters, shed hunters, some public land have ATV access, so, to think people are going to push deer out being in the woods, well, there are always people in public areas milling around, if you didnt know, you wont behave any differently come season.
