Don't see anyone explained that part with Prince. The top 100 guitar player list just came out and left Prince off the list. Tom Petty asked him to do the tribute. It was Princes time to shine since some of the " voters" were in the audience. It was Princes FU to the industry. But he also respected the tribute and looked at Tom for guidance. Tom knew history was happening cause he's a legend too and just let it happen. I love the love and joy he was giving to Dhani. They were all awesome. Every single one of them.
Im pretty sure this was Prince's night of induction too. I've read stories how excited Prince was to play with Tom Petty (but who really knows) The man was a fn mystery AND a legend.
Prince was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that night. Prince was late for his own concert performance that night. And I agree. You got it. They had respect for each other. Check out Prince playing Play That Funky Music
Tom Petty and Prince were friends. Prince was running late to his own concert that he was to perform at. Prince went backstage and talk with a member of ZZtop and left to the concert.
Bro! he gave a master-class, people throw shade that he wasn't a good guitarist....... so he showed everyone his is the GOAT!................you know your greatness when everyone on the stage turned to watch him........... and there was not one bad musician on that stage, but he went "GODMODE" on all of them B's
The story I heard was George Harrison's widow originally did not want Prince to play. The rest of this group persuaded her and she relented. Tom Petty and Prince were very good friends. Rolling Stone Ragazine had just released its "Top 100 guitarists" and Prince was NOT listed. Tom read the article, advised Prince, and told Prince to "slay" for his part!
They left him off the top 100 guitarist, and he was inducted in the Hall of fame the same day, so that was a your lost kinda performance, but that performance is who he is, so when he finished, he was done. He’s a showman he is music, so no matter what they did he was going to be Prince, they saw his concerts if they didn’t want him there they shouldn’t have invited him. But anyone who can make their guitar laugh and weep at the same time and then just shred it, the audience should feel honored this performance is one of the tops all time, at least that’s what they’re saying.
1st thing. Prince's end tossing the guitar is him 'dropping the mic'' like "thats how you do it. Your welcome." The showmanship live is part of the emotion and the experience at a concert. P.S. the greatest live solo ever seen. He turns a beautiful aching mournful slow song into that plus a powerful rock n' roll that you know you've seen a jaw dropping moment. I've watched the video 50+ time to inspire me to pick up my guitar.
Glad you saw that and I enjoyed your video. People have no understanding of who he is and where he comes from musically and how competitive he is, Prince doesn't even normally even do shh like this, he did this Dhani who asked Prince personally to do this, There is an entire story to this event I got told by a gentleman who worked with Prince, and the ONLY reason it isnt forgotten about as just another HOF jam session is because of what PRINCE did that night that why this performance has MILLIONS of views and people are still reacting to it. The only person Prince was focused on was Tom Petty if you watch it, that is who he was playing with. The looks between the two of them was unspoken language, Tom, you don't think I am going to get to F, just watch. You want me to keep going, here we go.. Tom looked at Prince when he looked at him you could see it, finish it. Jeff Lynne's guy who looked like he was working hard to sound just like Clapton, and Dhani could have asked Clapton to play his parts that would have been easy, he was there that night, but he wanted Prince and the smile on his face when Prince stepped into the light, he KNEW he was going to get what he wanted.
I've watched this performance at least once a week. Love the reaction. If you want to see more Prince, you should check out his version of Creep at Coachella and his live performance of Play that Funky music
Its lovely watching Dhanis face as he plays along with these great artists, such joy. Prince shreds that like noone else. Think that might be Jeff Beck on the left side of the stage playing lead on the early parts before prince comes in. This is like the dream supergroup, just needs Keith Moon on drums :D 15 is how much i score this out of 10 ;p Thanks for the react Squirrel, keep it up.
Prince walking off at the end was just simply not needing the hype of the crowd. No disrespect at all to the other guys. You can see when he was playing all eyes were on him and everyone else blended into the back. There is talent and then there is Prince, a showman. He was a pretty shy guy for who he was on stage.
There was a list of the top 100 guitarist put out by rolling stones magazine before this performance. So the guys let him go last so he could get his point across... classy move by the other artist and we'll prince had the best middle finger moment of all time! Think he got his point across pretty good. And the reactions by Tom and Harrisons son are authentic, they didn't have time in rehearsals to practice his solo so that was thier first time hearing the solo. And yes he was genuinely pissed when he tossed the guitar and walked off.
Absolute virtuoso performance. Just like you I was blown away the first time I saw this. I've watched it a lot more than '15' times since 😁. Keep 'em coming Squirrel, you're putting some great stuff on here 👍.
Definitely check out the Traveling Wilburys if you like this. Eric Clapton was brought in by George Harrison to play on this song. Not only for his great playing, but in bringing him in, Paul and John would take his song more seriously. As far as this performance.. Prince really got to show how great a guitarist he is, and walked off the stage in the same drop the mic type attitude.. :) Thanks for the video and oh yeah.. 15 haha
There's another "in honor of" to George using this song with Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and many others, just as this one did. This version, I think, outshines the Clapton/McCartney... spin. But both are DEFINITELY enjoyable and worth the watch.
Thankyou so much for not interupting Prince's part in this. The smlle on your face. Priceless. WTF. Will never see his likes again. The world is shit witout him. Will not spk bout him in past He will always be here. How could he not be. Miss you Prince. X

@@craigmccullough7333 No one can deny Prince’s talent, and this solo is really good. I just feel like he hijacked the performance making it about himself instead of George. I still love this tribute though.
It's actually worse than that... He wasn't listed at all in their original list. This was days later. When they redid the list a few years after, they put him at number 33.
I think Prince kept looking over to see if the band was gonna keep that ending vamp going so he could continue soloing --- they really shoulda kept that outro going for another 5 minutes

Brilliant stuff! I've always been a huge fan of Petty and of Lynne from his ELO days and his great solo albums, and of course both of them in the Wilburys. Prince, I think, was just doing some showmanship with his "job done" type ending and walk off, almost like a mic drop moment. So many great performers on one stage must've been about 15 of them!

Prince can play 25 instruments but he is King on the guitar many people called him Jimi hendrix reincarnation on the lead guitar he is also great on the Bass guitar and drums

I don't know if you know this but prior to this performance Rolling Stone did their top 100 guitarist of all time and Prince wasn't on the list. He came with a chip on his shoulder. He didn't rehearse with the band at all. He felt disrespected.
No, Prince was upset because the guitarist from the left played over Prince at a practice. Prince left and told them he would be ready that night. No one knew what he was going to do, and that was why they were all so into his playing; lesson- do not interrupt Prince. He was supposed to play a short time. He kept looking over because they told him to keep going.
He dropped the Mike because he blew it out of the water!!!!!
I was lucky enough to see Prince perform twice in London 1990 and 2007 moments that will stay with me forever.
Never got to see him live unfortunatly.

Fifteen?
No, Prince was upset because the guitarist from the left played over Prince at a practice. Prince left and told them he would be ready that night. No one knew what he was going to do, and that was why they were all so into his playing; lesson- do not interrupt Prince. He was supposed to play a short time. He kept looking over because they told him to keep going.
