    Great video. About two years ago, I was repairing a section of staircase at Calke Abbey for the National Trust. There was a team of 2 guys running a replacement section of a massive cornice in-situ using a template which was running on wheels located into a track which they'd screwed to the wall. Incredible to watch, and brilliant to see that these skills are still very much alive.

    Interesting how tough it is to answer in words the question, "What do you mean by professional?". All you need to do is watch this video and the answer is there. Great stuff. He does it at the same time he is answering your questions and of course he makes it look easy. Beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

    I converted my loft and needed to repair the ceiling after opening up for the stairs. I used precast cornices 25+ years back. The shop is still there and went in with a bit of the old stuff to see if they could match it. They still kept it as stock! Using the same mold all this time. Wow.

    Interesting technique. I’m semi retired, but learnt and worked from an old plasterer who used to run up cornice work using lime putty.
    Surely one mix of lime putty and a zinc form could do the job in one hit.

    Great to watch ... and at least people can see WHY they get charged so much for this kind of work......
    Back in the day we'd make up wooden moulds 3" - 4" deep to keep it all nice and square, ( a bit time consuming) but your chap seemed at home with the metal profile, and quicker to produce no doubt........ I bet being watched/filmed when doing such a fiddley job made him sweat a bit :-)

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Pete
      James normally makes up a wooden horse and rails to run sections in situ but this was running up to an arch and that had to be run freehand. That is why he was saying it is easier to do on a bench. I don't think he was phased by the filming as such. He is a very nice guy and we talked about our shared passion for cycling off camera.

    I tried to repair ceiling plaster beads like that. But the plaster kept expanding. After that it would jiggle and you ended up with ribs. Still there and visible if you look. So I stopped looking! I think it looks great now. Think, as I try not to look. :)

    I did fibrous work for thirty years and did miles of in situ run cornice ,and mouldings , never seen it run without the wooden horse ..and never heard of mixing adhesive with the casting plaster to knock it back , we used keratin ....and always had to wear whites especially on site ..how times change .

    I hired a fibrous plasterer in Putney to replicate 6m of coving for a porch cast and fix he charged me £650

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder  4 роки тому +1

      Yes you can see why it would be that much. One trip to take a pattern or latex rubber casting. Materials, rent and rates for workshop, transport, time in the workshop materials and then coming back out to fix it. Not much profit there . Having 12 metres done would not be double.

    Hi roger what is the different between normal plaster and casting plaster

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder  4 роки тому

      Casting plaster is plaster of Paris and is quick setting but can be carved and moulded. It is very smooth with no grain.
      Thistle finish is harder and has a face so it is not good for scraping back or sanding.

      Tricky using timber around an arch. This is to replicate an existing feature

    • @jimichip

      Oi you, get back to repairing dents on cars 😂

    • @jimichip
      @jimichip 4 роки тому

      Seriously though, trying to make a timber moulding to match the original around an arch with tight corners would be a nightmare plus it would crack and split and continually move. But the main reason for doing it this way is that the original one on the arch next to it was made with plaster of Paris.

    • @chinbad
      @chinbad 4 роки тому +1

      I had to look at the video again to see it was arched, it makes more sense after seeing that. Impressive work, I couldn’t make a solid shape out of plaster of Paris, let alone match existing detail.
