Thanks. These are terrific explanations and demos. many years ago I studied with a great drum teacher in St. Louis. His name was Joe Geraghty and was one of the best teachers I’ve ever met. He taught me your sticking and called it stroke up down down. Thanks again.
@@MM-vs2et it's about the muscles in your hands. When you drum something like diddles or paradiddles, the muscles in your hands develop so you can play faster and get higher stick heights at fast speeds. When you play on a pillow, the surface gives less rebound to the stick after each stroke. This forces you to use more energy from your muscles then you would if you were drumming on a surface that gives lots of rebound (such as a pad or a drum.) This makes your muscles develop faster, and it also feels easy transferring from a pillow to a drum.
@@whowatchesthewatchmen4810 Is it even possible to do paradiddles as fast as in this video without using rebounds? I feel like it's not physically possible. Maybe the slower tempos, but I don't see it past 140-160 bpm
I doubt this matters anymore since the comment is a year old, but don't forget that pain in moderation is okay. That hopefully means that your hands are developing and the pain will go away once you've practiced enough. But like most things, drumming isn't about putting in the maximum effort 100% of the time. If you have pain in your hands for too long, it's possible to seriously injure yourself.
Often wondered the same thing myself. I think the value of the Paradiddle will become clear by playing each of the stickings you provide above on two different surfaces (sounds) Put the left on the snare and the right on the mounted tom or floor tom. Play alternate sticking (RLRLRLRL), doubles (RRLLRRLL) then the paradiddle (RLRRLRLL) You should hear a pretty "cool" pattern appear. Add in different accents and some variations and you will have a plethora of "cool" patterns.
You are a great drummer, but I have one curiosity that if your left hand holds the stick in traditiinal way as you do in this video, and when you play the heavy metal stuff with left hand in traditional position, can it all still sound the heavy super strlke I mean with that holding the stick way ??
Ok why is there videos in how to play a marching snare but like no videos of how to play quad drums and I really need to learn how to play but no videos I’m lost
I hav e the same question (unfortunately unanswered). What is the point in paradiddles ? I'm a beginner drummer. Why can't we just do LRLRLRLRLRLR or LLRRLLRRLLRRLLRR ? Anyone can answer this by the way.
It's more about the accents on the hits and what you can do with a paradiddle around the kit. It definitely gives you alot more creativity on fills when you learn your rudiments.
As soon as you start feeling yourself tense up, bring it down a little and just play at that speed for a minute or heck 10 minutes.THEN bring up it back up and you’ll be able to go faster than before
I am a self taught percussionist and by far this video has helped me a lot thank u
This videos are a treasure. No bullshit.

I love this channel it taught me ..and now it's teaching my students 💯❤😭😭😂
Thank you,,,, best demonstration of the paradiddle and how to learn it.
look at those arms, this man has hella chops
Im currently practicing them and other basic roudiments on a pillow. It hurts, but I know that it will help out eventually!
I don't think a pillow is a good surface for sticking

@@MM-vs2et yeah I'd agree with you. I think the OP is trying to get his paradiddle to those tempos.

Great lesson - extremely helpful and thanks so much for posting!

Thank you for teaching one fundamental rudiment.
3:32 are you sure that you doesn't push fast speed button on video??
Javier López Silva it's looks like that it's true ahah
He starts playing at 1:40 & 2:24 & 3:03 & 4:57.
Not to digress, but Vic Firth makes some excellent drum sticks :)
If u just play with your wrists and just relax u will get the bounce a lot easier
nice technique I smile to whole time trying to get that up stroke.
thanks , a very simple lesson.
are nova sticks good?
What is a "lower partial"?

Way to sneak in the "doctor" thing, without sounding braggy.

Marcus Spain Just style, and also to vary between RLRL RLRR RRLL, but in some rudiments, its used to switch hands.

awesome thanks
How to I get past my peak speed?
Keep going Jas, just stay relaxed.
As soon as you start feeling yourself tense up, bring it down a little and just play at that speed for a minute or heck 10 minutes.THEN bring up it back up and you’ll be able to go faster than before
I have trouble bouncing the diddles at higher speeds. It's like my wrists only do the work.
I guess that I put TOO MUCH emphasis on being FAST and that's why I've struggled with single paradiddles off and on for YEARS.
Thank u for the sticker their awesome
EXCELLENT
sounds like a five stroke roll to me
i think it is i want to know the right answer to
I want so bad to be able to do that. I’m 40 lol it’s getting late. Just need to take the time. Instead of other vices 🙃
I’m gaining momentum not thinking of it as “left right” just feeling it, awesome
Just started at 60.
Errrr, I couldn't hear the difference in the drum sticks... :-/
Not listening close
You couldn't Vic Firth the difference? if you Vic Firth closely you can Vick Firth a slight Vic Firth, did i mention these sticks are Vic Firth?
Clean your ears they must be Firthy.
Huh? Double-stroke @ slower tempo becomes a rebounded bounce as speed increases.
1:38 really fast , controlled stroke, upstroke & 2 taps.
Impeccable timing....I hear now why I sound terrible.🙃
What is your bottom head
easy diamond in vic firth single paraddidle level
What Remo head ?
I have your drum sticks black and white and red and white
This must not be my night. I'm having trouble following.
I have the first pair of sticks accept I had to sand them because they gave my HUGE splinters
Mr.Dr.professorbatmanproductions / dude aint sticks fault, is your technique's fault, regards. got the same pair and splinters??? hmm dont know of em
why ? Why is is better than LRLRLRLRL or LLRRLLRRLLRRLLRR ?
Marcus Spain not better, different.
He didn't say it was better, they are just different
Man, those paradiddles are cooking like HOT chicken grease.

Duude! Is this guy an alien?!?!?!!!😧
It's an advert. Any stick will work providing your technique is nailed.
Why an accent each time ?
It would be nice if you would explain with right left and when to accent. Not just showcase your talent. Thanks
