I REMAPPED MY LAND ROVER DEFENDER! STAGE 2 ALIVE TUNING

- Hello and welcome back to my channel and to my Land Rover Defender TD5. In this video I get my Defender 90 remapped. I went for a Stage 2 remap at Alive Tuning after having already fitted an Alive intercooler to my TD5 Defender 90. The Land Rover defender runs at around 120bhp as standard and I have found my TD5 defender slow and hard to drive at times. This stage 2 remap made a huge difference to how it drives and has transformed my Defender 90 completely! Check out the video to see what BHP we managed to make from my Defender!
I highly recommend Alive Tuning for this- had a great day with them on the Dyno and tuning my Defender to be a genuine fun daily driver! (www.AliveTuning.com)

Thanks for sharing Doc! I have been on the fence way too long and I am now convinced of a stage 2 remap and larger intercooler for my 2008 Defender 110.
Thanks Diablo- you won’t regret it!
Great results, well done regards mark
Thanks Mark appreciate it!
Love love love this!!
🙏🏼
Wow these upgrades look great
Thanks!
Glad to see you went for it, no surprise really 🤣
😂Glad I did!
Great vid, can’t believe the power/torque increase. Definitely go for the Fox shocks have them on my TD5 with Eibach springs. A world of difference to the ride.
Thanks! Yeah was more than I was expecting, I'm very tempted as mine currently feels as though it has no suspension at all and heard really good things about the fox shocks
@@thedoctorsgarage they are a touch in the pricey side but fairly easy to fit. They just seem to absorb better and rebound at the right rate so they give more confidence. I just need to do my anti roll bars next. Oh and now a stage 2 remap etc. The list gets longer every time I get it out the garage.
Great video mate 👍 my dad thinking about getting his defender remapped soon
So worth it- best thing I’ve done to it!
10:30 sounds great!! 😁
👌🏻👌🏻
Hey Doc, love the vids, did you have to let your insurance company know about the remap and did it go up by much? Cheers
Looks great !! I am booked in to go next month for a stage one, but maybe I should go stage two 🤔
The Intercooler swap is well worth doing just to put a new one in really, mine didn't look too good when I took it out!
So cool! Have you seen Juice Motors on UA-cam, he’s been adding air ride suspension on his builds!
Thanks! I have but I think the kit alone cost £2500 before fitting event begins! Very cool bit of kit though
All about the torque ! 400nm is tremendous
You can definitely feel that boost in torque!
Don't forget to tax it , you only have 42 days left from today.😃love the car.
🙏🏼 Thanks and Thank you for checking that for me 😂
I’m booking my self in ✌🏼🇬🇧
👌🏻 it’s the best thing I’ve done!
I’d be looking at putting better brakes on it, great video, love the look of your LR defender 👍
Thanks! I've had my lines replaced and it stops quite well to be fair but would like to upgrade to bigger discs
@@thedoctorsgarage go to Juice motors, fellow youtubers
Super stuff… I need to call Gary at alive.. need more power
It’s the best thing I’ve done to my 90- makes it so much better to drive!
Have you still got the stock exhaust and just done the remap, inter cooler and hoses? It sounds great. I’m planning to go the same route just not sure if I want a new exhaust set up and it gets too loud especially after all the sound proofing I’ve had done.
Hey Justin- I have the standard exhaust and it’s not too loud at all- at high revs you hear a bit more of the engine but it’s fine round town- sounds the same
Good vid!.. you can tell by the look on your face the vast improvement lol.. have you had chance to drive with puma engine & whats your thoughts 🤔
Thank you! I haven't had a chance but there was a time I was looking at a puma as my TD5 felt so slow and I'd heard good things about the Puma. However recently having had my TD5 remapped I'm really happy to keep it now, I'm sure lots of people watching this may have a Puma and can give their honest opinion!
@@thedoctorsgarage hi .. thanks for replying 👍 I suppose there will be +&- between them both tbf.. think the only other thing would be interior cosmetic differences.. I under the impression its probably one of the reasons why they went to a puma as I'm guessing it's probably a bit smoother running possibly more economic.. 😅
Great vid and as it’s something I’m planning on doing relevant to me
How much has your mpg gone down?
Thanks Simmo- In all honesty I'm not sure... Haven't driven it loads since I got it back but on the way home when I put my foot down at 70 I could almost see the fuel needle moving down (and the Defender felt like it was going to take off!) Will let you know how I get on over the next few weeks
Ha ha sounds epic
Mines my daily so useful to know
What is smoke like ? Any black ?
How does remapping a Defender impact on downstream components like turbo, drive shafts and xfer case? Are components not rated by manufacturers for specific kW and you significantly increase the torque and power? I have a Puma 2.2 with after market bigger intercooler but I’m hesitant about mapping.
Hi Fergus I believe the components as standard can take a stage 2 remap- if you go further or a bigger turbo Alive would recommend upgrading certain components to match
Great video, how much was your remap ?
Thanks really appreciate it. My remap was £250 with Alive
If you delete and close egr valve do you still need to blank the egr of with a blanket
Hi James Thanks for your comment- I’m not sure to be honest…
Have you considered the air-suspension upgrade?
It looks very cool, but no idea how much it costs? I’ve seen the kit alone is £2.5k I think!
Told you about the Turbo swap ! Do it Doctor !
It's tempting!
@@thedoctorsgarage - What is £1100 ? , you can swap the Turbo yourself !! You have the bigger IC, the Turbo will push some more air through it, you might need to upgrade some of the boost pipes , you can have the epic TD5 whistle.......10:30 onward -----ua-cam.com/video/4TxsQKLK69A/v-deo.html
Very very cool, but now though how long is the standard clutch going to last?
I'm hoping a while!... Will see how it goes
@@thedoctorsgarage then definitely the LOF kit is the way to go. I'm a long way from the UK and despite efficient shipping, opted to go with a standard clutch and dmf... But darn, this stage 2 tuning is a bitter, jagged pull to try swallow 🤣 I want the power but really not in the mood to replace clutches every 2 years... My daily is a tuned up mk1 golf, so yes I do drive... Uhmmm... Spiritedly 😂🤣
did you do the waist gate adjustment on the engine, as that can improve power output
I don’t think I have no? Is that something to do with the turbo (I have no idea)
@@thedoctorsgarage it makes the engine go better. it stops some of the fumes being suckled in.
See video below.
ua-cam.com/video/ZX9O3t6iDn8/v-deo.html
How much was the intercooler and how much was the remapping?
The intercooler was around £550 and the remap was £250
Hello brill channel
What colour is your defender please looks great (new to the scene)
Thanks David! It’s Keswick Green 👌🏻
@@thedoctorsgarage many thanks just subscribed:)
@@David-zm6kl 👌🏻 hope you enjoy the channel!
Please make a comparison video on the suspension set up they offer - I've been considering either their comfort springs or TMDs but there isn't a lot online discussing them both
Thanks for the comment Luke- suspension is on my list and did have a good look around whilst I was there.Jason at Alive was who I dealt with initially - really knowledgable about all their products
Personally, I wouldn’t bother as having had the comfort springs fitted to my 110 the ‘improvement’ is fractional. Save your money for sound deadening is my suggestion.
How many KMs were on your TD5 before the remap?
About 71,000 miles 👌🏻
What year is the defender td5.
Thanks for your comment- It's registered in January 2007 (built at the end of 2006) so it is just before the TD5 was discontinued in the Defender
do they fit a stage one airbag??
I think I might need it!
@@thedoctorsgarage Before you drove off did you declare the alterations to your insurer?
Has she got wheel spacers?
Hi Joe- no wheel spacers - but does look like it to be fair
Tunned TD5 or a Puma 2.4/2.2?
Not sure as never driven a puma, but love my TD5 now!
@@thedoctorsgarage does it make a difference driving a tuned TD5 on the motorway?
@@thedoctorsgarage wait until you drive a Puma! I love my TD5 but watching yr vids I think you’d prefer having a Puma for a daily driver.
@@justinhong929 do you think a Puma is still better than a tuned TD5?
ah, this is getting out of hand now....
😂
How uncouth!
It makes it such a more useable vehicle!
@@thedoctorsgarage I mapped mine a couple of weeks back. I didn't change the exhaust though.. and I still have the original intercooler (the sports one are SO expensive) but yes, it make a big difference. But still.. how uncouth!
If you want to go fast buy a sports car
Why? When we can do both? Also, it's not about speed, its power. These 5cylinder 2.5 turbo diesels are incredible with relatively minor mods. It's like saying, why have a sports car when you can have a motorbike? We get the fact the bike will be quicker but these TD5's are incredible to drive when tuned.
Couldn't agree more! For me it just makes the defender such a more usable car day to day
Iv got a puma and it’s as flat as a wet fart::: limited to 90mph that’s 2 fast ... it’s ok making one go fast but you need to improve the brakes and suspension.. and a roll cage
@@chrisfell3052 which is everything I've done and I do agree with you. You don't want to roll one. My brakes are upgraded, suspension and I'll be having a half roll cage fitted so I'll feel more comfortable taking my little lad out when he's older... And for my own self preservation. I don't drive it like I've stolen it but I do give it a good old blat every now and then. Just being able to pull a 2 ton trailer up Sleights exiting Whitby without drama is a testament to it. A few years ago I drove the most powerful (proven) 2.4 90 HT Puma and it was absolutely insane. Addictive.
