Since I’m a relatively small guy, my wife is even smaller… this does help a lot getting in and out…
But slippery when wet… I was nearly falling off one day … 😂
Lucky me, my Landy is registered as a camper, that helps keeping costs down.

I love how utilitarian the defender is. I remember as a child the sheep farmer near us had one, but it was the previous one with the sliding windows and the exterior door handle which was inside the door. I am sure it will help out on many occasions, enjoy

ive got 3 and i love them doing an m57 conversion soon,i have a 300 tdi and you do not need heater plugs what so ever aslong as you have a good battery it will fire up first couple of rotations of the engine

Well i have Mike my TD5 Defender now for almost two years and I am glad that i have him he is my "therapist" on wheals I thank God for all my blesssings i have. My wife gave me a cup I dont need a therapist I just need my Land Rover Defender.

absolutely!! i had my first ever land rover ( series 3 ) 2 years ago for my 18 birthday i had it for almost 2 sweet years with it!, id say its quite remarkable and challenging to drive it, i fell in love the first time i saw it when i was in grade 6 its always been my dream car nothing else!, but like theres also a contrary having landrovers especially series in my home country indonesia here the weather are menace! so hot its almost imposible to drive it without ac especially if you driving an series it would be hell id say but i had fun driving it as an daily car, even tho my parents were against it cause we have a lot of proper cars to use as an daily, ive sold it like a month ago thinking to buy an landrover defenders just like yours! which is more humane to drive as an daily car but also the defender like yours ( 1990 - 1998 ) are so expensive here even tho with high milleage or unoriginal one like swapped engine or interior, the prices so high almost like the new one but it would be a privillage driving landrover here not everyone had it in their garage, so its a quite pleasure to own and drive one! like our first president of indonesia Ir. soekarno says

Apart from a couple of ropey bits - the doors etc - the Land Rover looks fine to me. The major problem with having one in _pristine_ condition is that you will then be afraid to use it.
That kill switch key on a chain would definitely get on my nerves. The kill switch itself is useful - anything you can do to turn off a would-be thief is worth doing. But I'd need to find an alternative to the chain if it were me!
Seatbelts - I have no issue with my car simply _reminding_ me about the belt. Two pings to give me a heads-up - cheers and no problem. My issue with it is that if you don't comply, it will ding-ding-ding for a _very_ long time. And if I put my tool bag on the passenger seat it thinks someone is sitting there and it will ding its head off as I'm going down the road until I capitulate by putting the seatbelt on with nobody sat in the seat. So yeah... keep it simple, stupid! And that's why the old Land Rover is great.
Power: there's no doubt that the old 300tdi is slow by modern standards. But I get the impression that yours is a little _too_ slow. My Defender is a Puma, and they're a bit faster, but before that I had an old Discovery which had the 300tdi and I feel like my Disco would not have struggled getting down the road to the extent that yours did. And for me, in the 300, 60 was quite comfortable and 70 was definitely do-able but I tended to settle on 60. I definitely didn't need to settle on 50. So it may be worth having a little look at that.

I have owned and driving div. LR for over 40 years , have my 2. Defender, and it will follow me to the grave. And the list of mods. are endless , that`s why Defender are so fun to own and drive.
Yes I think I said as much in the video, as this is my first defender. I agree with the 'if you want modern stuff buy a modern car' I almost feel that the older way of doing things is much better! Hope you have many more happy years with yours

You might want to have a look at the engine - the 300tdi should (!) be able to sit at 70 on the motorway, albeit more comfortably at 60-65. (I used to have an early 90 non turbo, with 67 top speed, so was constantly up and down the gears too).
I'm looking to buy a similar 110 SW to yours - as an "untidy classic" that'll take mucky dogs and bikes, trips to the tip, without having to protect the interior / exterior.
Ultimately, the 300tdi is also a great long termer, as it's the last non-electronic car, so should be striaghtforward to keep on the road (as long as you keep the rust under control). It would also be a perfect upgrade for an electric conversion at some point, once battery prices come down and converters get up to achieve the cost benefits of scale.
I discovered last month that the turbo was blown so after swapping that its much better. I would definitely reccomend it. nearly a year on from this video it has only grown on me
Been so lucky, had my D1 for nearly 20 years, still pulls like a train V8 power. Had the chance to pick up a misused 110 they are what they are, it’s going to be a effort to get it back to its original load out, but will be worth it, it’s part of the ownership of anything of LR vintage.
Door seals are a cheap fix, look up the defender water ingress pdf, very helpful, to stop the water leaks.
Look at X eng door latches will save your trousers!

I bought a 3 door td5 in white. In process of setting it up as a camper van. Had it 14 months now. I’m similar to you in that I want it very presentable but not concourse.
Its the best way and I think you look much cooler in a rougher one.

I feel like you don't know until you have one
DIFF-STICK : Also, remember, to activate the LOW gearing, put the normal gearstick into neutral, and then with the clutch depressed, shift the DIFF-STICK into NEUTRAL (halfway). Then clutch off, and then back on again, and push the DIFF-STICK into LOW. So 2 separate movements. NEVER ram the stick from H to L in one movement, or vice versa. The Defender has 12 gears. There is a special technique, to transition from 5L to 1H, on the move, but it's quite tricky. i can write it out here if you need it. That grassy section where you live, is absolutely perfect for the LOW gearing, for sure!

It would be nice if it appreciated. I do like doing it if I have enough time to fit it in but sometimes it can be a pain trying to prioritise it which is why I still haven't replaced the door seals. I hope we make it to 50000 that would be great
I've had landys for over 25 years and forget what it must be like for new owners coming from ford focus etc. welcome to the club. It'll soon be a family member and appear in your family photo album. If you wanted a bit more power you can fiddle with fuel pump on the 300 TDI if you want black smoke. But better to just get a TD5 and get a custom map / tune. Mine goes very well.
Its off the road at the moment as the clutch cylinders have failed and I am planning on fixing the annoying bits (sticky bonnet release etc) so it is all a bit easier to live with.
Defender 110 300TDi is the absolute peak of the Defender. Yours has a few tweeks to try to make it a County spec but it doesn’t look like was an original CSW. The rubber mats are aftermarket, they look like Exmoor Trim. The front seats are not original. It originally had a middle seat in the front. The cubby box is a replacement. I’ve had mine for 20 years. Mines a 98 300Tdi 110 CSW. I hope you get to love yours as much as I love mine.
You have an issue with your engine, or possibly gearing, if you max out at 50. Mine will get up to 100. 70mph on a motorway is no problem.
It sounds like you know your stuff! A lot of people have mentioned it should be faster so ill have to have a look into that issue
Mine is the same as yours, and I mistyped it is a 96 as well, and I’ve had it for 20 years. You have big tires with aggressive mud treads fitted. That can have quite a marked impact on performance and fuel consumption. The aggressive tread increases rolling resistance and the larger diameter raises the gear ratio. That said when I run mine on big mud terrain tires it still happily gets up to 80mph, 100mph with all terrain. The best tire size for the 110 is 235/85 R16. I’m assuming yours has been serviced and the air filter is clean. That can have a surprising impact as can a snorkel fitted badly. Check that the flexible pipes from the snorkel to the filter box aren’t crushed. After that it’s down to timing and fuel. If it smokes a lot then get the timing checked. They always smoke a bit but if you leave a big cloud behind you then the timing is probably off. After that get the injectors tested. I’ve had to replace a set on mine. Don’t be afraid to have a go yourself. That is one of the joys of the 300Tdi. It can be home maintained without an issue.

I have sold them for over ten years and they simply will not crack 80mph - which typically is 88 mph on the speedo. Bit more on the 90 version but essentially the 115bhp yours was gifted at Solihull with plus the aerodynamics of a bungalow and 1:21 diff and 80 is your lot.
Now if you have modded it then maybe you go a bit faster but 100mph - no chance.
It's looking like mine had a blown turbo which is why it felt really slow. Boost gauge wont show any pressure and its blowing blue smoke @@tillyfoxtrotter

300tdi is an excellent choice, one of the most robust and easy to service on your own 👌

@@offgridscotland advice if this hasn’t been done in while: check oil, check coolant, check air filter, buy a servicing kit change all filters, oil change, grease transmission, change oil in differentials. Oil change in transfer case ( at least you will know it has the right amount as they tend to leak) change the gearbox liquid using MTF 94 ONLY if it is a rb380 gearbox. Buy a lazer pump to fill in the gearbox transfercase and diffs. You will find the correct amount of oils and specifications on defender forums. Repeat this operation every year, skipping gearbox, diffs, and transfer case every 2 years min depending on usage.

I've only ever had land rovers. My main 110 200 tdi is about to turn 250 K miles . You're rear door weight/stiffness is partly cos of that spare wheel

I don't want to sound arrogant but having worked in the criminal justice system for 20 years I simply cannot believe that such an intelligent man as yourself took that vehicle on a public road! Dicky brakes, no handbrake and no lights means no MOT and no insurance. Should you startle a stag and it jumps in the road it would probably end up in your lap. Imagine if you had your wife or Casper in the car. If you were pulled over by the police you would truly be off grid and off road with a driving ban and a difficult time getting insurance when you got your licence back. Please, use the focus if you need to go out. Still love the channel 😊

Greetings from a Defender owner elsewhere in the Highlands.
Hmm.. It looks a bit ropey. It's as if the last owner messed around with things a little too much. There are expensive silicon hoses in the engine bay, a boost gauge, and lots of switches everywhere. I would check the airflow and the wastegate on the turbo. They are no racecar, but that is a little sluggish.
The headlights should be an easy fix, and as someone has already mentioned, the common causes are the terminals in the switch; the switch gets hot and softens the plastic and the terminals get pushed back so they no longer form a proper connection (the flash uses a different part of the switch so isn't affected), the connectors to the back of the bulbs can corrode, or the relay can fail.
The handbrake is a simple mechanism. A cable attaches to the handle, which in turn attaches to a mechanism in the drum your prop shaft connects to, which pushes brake shoes out to stop the drum turning. There is a little adjuster on the drum, which you turn to increase the bight. You can replace the whole system in an afternoon.
The Land Rover will become part of the family. My boys grew up with them, and both came home from the maternity ward on one; their school friends loved to ride in them. We have done countless road trips all over the country, and ours even converts into a mini camper.
One thing I did was to add high-back seats in the middle row to give the kids a bit more protection. It's easy to find seats on eBay that will fit the existing seat brackets, or with a little fabrication, you can add the mid-row seats from a newer Defender.

I have had a TD5 90 since 2012. It's very expensive to own but my wife won't let me sell it and my son wants to drive it when he passes his test. It will probably run on chip fat when everything goes horribly wrong. Drives nicely though, and it's only done 142,000 miles. I live in rural Scotland as well.
The turbo was bad on mine which was why it was down on power. My son still loves playing inside it though so it seems these things become members of the family pretty fast
Run a TD5 on chip fat? Not a chance - it will destroy the motor before you have left the drive.
200/300 Tdi's do not really like veg oil either - any delayed start sends cold veg oil over the piston crown and gums the rings up. Avoid unless you enjoy rebuilding engines.

Rob it sounds very like your in low ratio the way your explaining things, I hope you read this because I’m sure I’m right and I want you to enjoy the ride more, also check your “ diff lock ‘ is not on.
I though the same thing after scratching my head. I mentioned in the last comment I think it was a blown turbo. The diff lock is also jammed but I think it is jammed off rather than on and is a job to get around to. The starter moter needs replacing this week so I might have a look at the gearbox while I am doing that

That`s a 300tdi and should go much better than that. They aren't the fastest things in the world but they are quite nippy low down. As for the leaks, I'd check the door seals first, as they are the cheapest and easiest things to fix. Then you into leaks behind the dash from the bulkhead. Things will break and drop off, but everything is fixable and relatively cheap.

Get a pin back in the door stay, the footwell leak is either door seals, or bulkhead rusted and holed under screen and behind dash. but then it has holes in floor to let the water out!
Simple thing is don't drink and drive as you WILL spill it! it's also a horrible thing to clean up in those cubby boxes...
You paid well over the odds, £14+ thousand, it's a £8-10 thousand quid vehicle.
300tdi is the best, most reliable engine in the Defenders, that's why ROW versions kept the engine until 2007, all the way through the td5's, in fact they were made about 2 days longer than the td5's... 😛
Headlights not woring is likely to be one of 3 things, the master switch (the contact melts into the plastic base), the column switch (burns the contact) or the relay (burned contacts or failed coil) or even a blown fuse, but will work on high beam if flash works.
you need to get it running properly, it's not, it should do 85mph, cruise at 70mph all day long. I would suggest injectors are not good spray pattern.
What you have to consider is the Defender is an off-road vehicle than goes on the road, most other things are road vehicles that can go off road; there is a big differnce in the two. Defenders are very good off road if you know how to drive them.

Arb blockers and silicone turbo hoses fancy defender
Learning the silicone turbo hoses mean whoever had it first has done something funky with the turbo and now its not working. what are Arb blockers?
Lockers sorry, arb is a well known off road brand, the differential lockers are supposed to compress air in the differential, do you see a compressor somewhere in vehicle? what I can see is that previous owner has used this vehicle for serious off roading purposes, the silicone hoses, all the locker and additional buttons, turbo pressure manometer etc… obviously heavy use adds constraints to all the mechanical components of your vehicle, quick question, what makes you say that the turbo is gone? Loss of power? Black smoke from exhaust? Turbo pressure on mano not rising to the corresponding bar? Greetings from France
Great! No I haven't found a compressor anywhere. Its been very down on power and is now blowing blue smoke and the turbo pressure doesn't go above zero. I haven't checked to see if the intercooler is full of oil yet@@goryhory
TIP : If you start hauling bigass tree logs with that front winch, you're asking for trouble. It's not really designed for that. It's meant for pulling you up and out of ditches, up slippery muddy hills, and up rocky steep mountain slopes (in conjunction with low gearing). I mean, if the log is light enough, you'd probably get away with it, but I wouldn't go down that path, if I were you. If you get the angles wrong, you could risk damaging the front suspension, warp the front end of the frame/chassis, damage the tread of the tyres. etc. A much better idea would be to turn the car around, get 2 long ropes, tie 2 bowman knots and wrap them around either end of the tree, then 2 smaller bowman knots at the other end of the ropes, and slip those 2 over your towball on the back of the truck, to form a triangle. Then, inside the truck, select the LOW GEAR on the DIFF-STICK, and drag the logs to where you want them placed, in that way. With that gearing, you can bring down the Eiffel Tower.

If you end up having no use for it, you can always attach a grapling hook to the end of it, then pierce a nice big juicy top-roast to it (stuffed with Haggis), and then try your luck at fishing the "Loch Ness Monster".@@offgridscotland

I actually pulled it down from autotrader and diddnt sell it. It wasnt working well so I couldnt see how I could use it properly but I swapped the turbo clutch and door seals etc and now I love it too much to let it go. (turbo was buggered which was why it was slow)
Yes the Land Rover are agricultural,it’s what they were built for. You won’t appreciate your Land Rover until you sell it, then you will always regret getting rid of it. Land Rovers get in your blood. I’ve been driving them for 40 years. FFS yurt try to enjoy it

One minute into the video I already knew you bought the wrong vehicle. Saying a Land Rover has a heavy clutch tells me you don't undertsand what a Land Rover is. A Land Rover is a utility vehicle and a machine rolled into one happy bundle.
They were never meant to drive, handle or have car like convenience. What you need is a general urban 4x4, Discovery, Land Cruiser, Shogun or modern soft 4x4 pickup.
I wouldn't say white with black checker plate, oversize tyres, oversize wheel arches and winch is neutral. If you want to look normal/understated then blue or green with no "look at my 4x4" features.
A land Rover isn't designed for child seats, again, you need an urban 4x4. For the record, I have had loads of Series 2, 3, Defender 90, Discovery and Range Rover's. I would advise you buy an urban 4x4 or accept it for being what it is, a Land Rover, NOT A CAR!
Thanks I have had a bit more time with it now and its growing on me but I have also been looking at a Discovery as an addition to the fleet and keeping the defender for using around the plot

You called it slow, wait till you pass faster vehicles stuck in the snow, or mud even, the tyres are the best you can get for your conditions, all in all your a “ landy “ owner now never slag them off because you will be the minority I promise 👍
I had to replace the turbo as it was blown so I think mine was on slower side of slow without the turbo working but now we have had it for a year it is part of the family
