Great song by Don McLean. It is his tribute to the sad life of the painter Vincent Van Gogh. He suffered from depression & committed suicide. He never saw any success during his life. But now his paintings are worth millions of dollars.
Hi Mrs Penpal. I did enjoy listening to this with you, it reminded me of the shock I felt when I heard him take his life. Before you listen to the song again, google Vincent Van Goghs paintings and all the poetry of the song will become much clearer to you. Starry Night Over The Rhône, 1888 The Potato Eaters, 1885 (with eyes that know the darkness in my soul) Two Figures 1890 (sketch the trees and the daffodils) Snow-Covered Field with a Harrow 1890 (catch the breeze and the winter chills, in colours on the snowy linen land) Sunflowers, 1888 (flaming flowers that brightly blaze) Wheatfield with Crows, 1890 (morning fields of amber grain) Old Peasant Woman 1885 (weathered faces lined in pain) Prisoners Exercising, 1890 (ragged men in ragged clothes) Reading his biography will fill in the other words in the song. Maybe he was too beautiful for the harshness of his world.
This is a very touching song, and so delicate. It seems to be a favorite of my father’s. He comes from the generation that truly established folk singing like this. And I know the term tortured artist is used a lot. But in the case of Vincent Van Gogh, I am sure it was all too true.
This is our song as well. We never danced to it. We met online and just asked if she liked art and we both did. Second question do you like the song Vincent by Don McLain? I was going through a depression session and her through a failed marriage. 4 years later here we are with our son and new life.
HiMrs Pen , Starry Starry Night is the name of a Painting By Vincent Van Gogh . He was an artist and no body recognised hos work . He suffered with Mental Illness and he killed himself . After his death his paintings eventually became worth a fortune . Don MClean made this song back in 1972 it was a massive hit for him ..
Don McLean was born in New Rochelle, New York in 1945. This is one of the most memorable songs of the last 50 years. It's important to thank Don McLean for reminding us of the tortured life Vincent lived. Vincent's life can provide insight into people that cannot cope with today's world.
this is the story of Vincent Van Gogh, one of the most famous painters in the world. He was a dutch painter from 1890 and a few years later. All of the descriptions Don sings are descriptions of his paintings. "the lovely linen land" refers to painters canvas Vincent was insane and spent time in an asylum. he started painting at 27 and died by suicide 10 years later. He never sold a painting when alive, and now they go at auction for $60 million dollars. that is what nameless faces on empty walls and nameless painting in empty halls means..it it s the story of Vincent.... and Starry Night was his most famous painting. Look up his art. his colors we incredible...especially his blues....if you look at all of his art you will recognize the paintings described in the song....his next most famous painting was of SUNFLOWERS....
Hi Blessing, i’ll turn 73 this month and I remember the song when it first came out. Never stopped to figure out what it meant until a few months ago when I watched a reaction and they told me. I thought, all these years and I were to stop to learn something that important. One of his most famous painting is called starry night. His other famous song is American pie. It’s epic.
Thank you so much. I know I’ve told you before, but you have been a great blessing in my life. You have enriched my life with your beautiful reactions.
Awesome song love it another awesome reaction by you again like always love your youtube channel your always so awesome on it thank you so much for sharing this video with us love it Mrs.penpal.🤗👍
What's interesting about Paul Gauguin is he painted Nevermore which was bought by Bradford born composer Delius who was the subject of a really great song by Kate Bush who you need to listen to.
Hello Blessing. Yes, a sad song. Even for someone who once knowed a Person who commitet suicide and left you behind, speechless and guilty, because you did'nt saw it coming, did'nt helped. Could i help? Today i know, i could not. It took a long time to realise this. Still the memory hurts. Greetings from Germany. ❤
It was all Paul Gauguin's fault he was another v famous painter who upset poor Vincent's when he painted Starry Starry Night. Kirk Douglas played him famously and I think Don M based this song on this famous film.
Please ...you have to read the book "Lust for life " by Irving Stone. Based on the life of VVG from his diaries and letters to his brother Theo. " Forget the movie based on this book..Although one of the best ever movies ive seen with Kirk Douglas as Van Gogh ..also Anthony QUIN....Re read this book a few times.Sad...happy.. depressing...uplifting....Just read it , x Please..
"Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)" was a massive hit in 1972 and remained popular throughout the seventies of my childhood. So add some nostalgia to the lament. When I was a kid the melody of a tune mattered more to memory than the lyrics, which only mattered in the chorus to the extent I could sing along. And this song delivers a very memorable melody, even if the lyrics were confounding back when. To further illustrate, the first Don McLean song I remember hearing was "American Pie" in the car with my parents driving to the mountains for a day in the snow and it came on the radio and I asked my mom what a "Chevy on a levee" was. I've heard these songs a thousand times both since then and they still hold up well.
Simply on about a working class people that were so degraded and despised.struggling to survive in such poor living conditions , and used by the upper classes of the day. i guess we can still call it 2023 conditions in some respects...
Vincent Van Gogh …. This is one song I find hard to perform with dry eyes… If you are new to this song, go check out the paintings of Van Gogh.. Starry Night is one of them.. Then while looking at the painting, listen to Starry Starry Night, capture the lyrics in your heart…. Thank you for playing this..
Hello Fam ✨ what was your first song for Don McLean? Let’s connect: linktr.ee/mrspenpal
bye bye american pie.
Great song by Don McLean. It is his tribute to the sad life of the painter Vincent Van Gogh. He suffered from depression & committed suicide. He never saw any success during his life. But now his paintings are worth millions of dollars.
in a fit of insanity he made a bon fire of the paintings in his studio...would be worth a billion dollars today

A tribute to artist Vincent van Goch, one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
This is a very touching song, and so delicate. It seems to be a favorite of my father’s. He comes from the generation that truly established folk singing like this. And I know the term tortured artist is used a lot. But in the case of Vincent Van Gogh, I am sure it was all too true.
Don McLean over 50 years ago was an amazing singer/guitarist and he still is. Thank god.
This song was about the 19th century painter Vincent Van Gogh, his paintings, his mental illness and eventual suicide.
That is well known! But his demise was not as simple as that ! Apparently shot by some bully thug s ! And died of his wounds! ,?
Don has such a beautiful voice.
This is “our song”. I asked - my now wife - to dance to this (how we met…); we’ve been married 50 years next year…. 💕

Congrats on your new life

Hi John ✨
This is Don, his voice and his guitar, he paints his picture of Vincent and Starry Starry Night with them
This may be the best song-poem ever written. The performance may accentuate that conclusion. It's always a spine-chiller.
WOW!! Such a great and simple song. Was mezmerized a little.
:)
the only artist I know to have a #1 song "American pie " and a #1 song wrote about them "killing me softly" preformed by Roberta Flack
Thanks, mrs penpal... this is one of the most beautiful songs I know... as stated below, it is a tribute to Vincent Van Gogh... Don was a great poet!

Hi Michael thanks for sharing that’s traumatizing hello to you in 🇩🇪
American Pie is another one about Buddy Holly dying in a plane crash.
It was all Paul Gauguin's fault he was another v famous painter who upset poor Vincent's when he painted Starry Starry Night. Kirk Douglas played him famously and I think Don M based this song on this famous film.
