Now you need to watch the live version in concert. Dire Straits Sultans of Swing Alchemy Live. ua-cam.com/video/8Pa9x9fZBtY/v-deo.html You really should treat yourself to watching it uninterrupted since you already watched the studio version. When Prince was asked in an interview What it feels like being the greatest guitar player in the world. He answered I wouldn't know. Ask Mark Knophler. You will enjoy a deep dive into his music. He wrote and composed every song done by Dire Straits. At 75 years old he just dropped a new album a couple months ago for free on youtube.
Mark is only good at 3 things - his guitar, his vocals, his songwriting, leading the band. Oops - 4. Then, did you notice he doesn't use the whammy/trem/vib on his Strat? All done by bending the strings (he's actually left-handed, probably helps). And (numbers 6,7)... he doesn't need/use a pick ! And he's also a nice guy. 😀
OMG! This is TRUE music. Mark Knopfler plays with passion. The entire band plays with skill. No autotune or other nonsense. Just pure talent and skill. A true classic. Glad you like this Other solid songs from Dire Straits to check out include "Money for Nothing" (with Sting as guest Vocalist). "Telegraph Road" "Down to the Waterline", "Once Upon a Time in the West" "Tunnel of Love" "Romeo and Juliet" "So Far Away", "Walk of Like", and many more
The song is about Mark (Mark Knopfler, the guitarist and singer here) getting caught in the rain and sheltering in a pub where there was an amateur band playing (The Sultans of swing) By the way, there was a whole verse missing from this version.
As others have said, this is a great introduction to the band, it's their most well known song, it started their career, they were the biggest band in the world in the 80's. Also it introduced the world to Mark Knopfler, he is the sing, lead guitarist if the band, he is widely recognised as one of the greatest guitar players and song writers of all time, you have lots of great music ahead of you with Mark. You should watch the live performance of Sultans of Swing from the Alchemy Live concert next. Going forward i would advise you to always listen to the album version 1st just to hear how greatly they develop live. Mark wrote this after seeing a Dixie Jazz band playing to an almost empty put in Deptford, London. They announced they were the Sultans of Swing which Mark found amusing as they were the opposite to that, and he wrote the song about that situation.
I am currently working on a new video where I go through all of their albums including the album that has this song on it. I'll make sure to keep you updated:) Thanks
This is not live. They are miming to the studio track for a TV appearance. That was very common back in the day. This video also cuts the end solo which is epic. Live at Alchemy is the where you need to go.
This wasn’t live but an on stage mime, and cut short at the end. If you want to see their best live version then ignore everyone saying Alchemy and go to the Old Grey Whistle Test and see it on there. It the best.
Thanks for this reaction of Sultans of Swing. Yet this edited version is cut just before the end solo (legend!). It’s like cutting Hotel California before the solo. Please listen to the entire studio version, and then treat yourself with the extended 1983 Alchemy Live version.
Thank you for taking your time to watch it and thanks for leaving a comment! I am currently working on a new video where I go through all of their albums including the album that has this song on it. I will be releasing it here soon, therefore I will keep you updated:) Thank you again:)
No entendiste mucho!!
They are not the Sultans of Swing. This song is about walking into a bar and seeing a Jazz band playing that they are not that into. The other guitar player is his brother. You must watch the live Alchemy concert version. Much better.
HEYO, SUPER COOL! You'll Have to come out to a show sometime. Also just coincidental. My mom named me after this supposedly "pretty girl" in high school whose name was Jocelyn:)
He's telling the story of going into a pub in London where a rubbish band were playing, a band called Sultans of Swing. It's not about themselves. You had some good things to say but it would have been much more enjoyable to watch if you hadn't paused every 5 seconds. I know you need to pause sometimes but it was a LOT. Completely ruined the flow of the music honestly.

Mark Knopfler is considered the best lead guitar in the world
