Definitely ok to say "you had to be there" with The Eagles. That "desert vibe" was real for a time (see 'America' w/ "Ventura Highway" and "Horse With No Name."
The disproportionate sales volume versus the "contribution to music, as a whole" works against them, as does the notorious personalities of band members, most notably "Nikon Don" Henley.

Part Fears 2 is a masterpiece of the early 80s, it's the record I always look to as one of the last great individual uniques songs before the 80s gave us the first signs we were drifting into a corporate ice age and live aid confirmed it and now with this Taylor Swift, Sheeran and the like it feels like that compact perma-ice that even the reemergence of the sun into the musical hemisphere would have trouble melting. Mind you Party Fears 2 is that record you'd be careful not to play in the vicinity of most modern people because you just know it would get right under their skin but there remains a raw beauty to it that retains something mysterious that still seemed possible to a young man in 1982. Agree wholeheartedly with Elton. Maybe his early 70s output was ok, but I can't even bring myself to give a listen to one of those albums. I'm so put off by his 80s pap , Sacrifice and Blue Eyes and dross of that ilk. Queen post 70s I pretty much dismiss too. I can't stand 'It's a kind of magic' and I do feel Freddie's vocals are overrated.

Wow, quite an eclectic mix, but then as I've said before, your wide and knowledgeable grasp of historical music has always impressed me.
I on the other hand, have been moved through the years by musicians who at a particular moment, reflected my life, at a critical life change.
    Bullet points if you will.
My lists therefore, will always be shorter, my range less broad. Nonetheless, the fathom of those moments are just as important and central to my life.
Just thought I'd pop that in 😁☯️🌱

Let me highly recommend the band Versailles and their song Philia...this song has both immensely complex melodies as well a a massive number or complex chord.... while not prog whichh you like people who love prog tend to also like this band.... they are Melodic Symphonic Power Metal. And the singer has wm amazing voice.... they are a Japanese Band whose costumes are inspired by French Rococo fashion.

How old is Barry Robinson? I can’t quite work it out, sometimes it sounds as if he was already old enough to know what’s what in the early 70s during the growth of program rock, next he seems to be talking about still being at school at the start of the 80s; bit of an enigma, really!

Oh my God. 💯 on The Cranberries. I really did enjoy the first album. Especially at the time it came out. It was quite refreshing when compared to everything else at the time. But by the second album I was done. That constant shrieking on Zombie had me ready to blow my brains out. And for some reason every cover band on the planet has that song in their repertoire. A sure fire way to get me to leave the joint. 😂
