That's the heaven's punishment for putting "cheap" and "Ferrari" in the same sentence. A Ferrari for definition can never be truly cheap. If apparently cheap, things are going to go really wrong, and soon. However, deep respect for putting your hands into that engine: you need a lot of knowledge and confidence to do that... and succeed.

Yes, it is obvious that even if the car looks the first move would be to disassemble it and to check every component. It is a long and exhausting work, but in the end you have a car that works.
Anyway, with such a small space and without professional tools it is clear that the best strategy is trying to solve the problems when they first appear. (And who could resist the temptation to drive a Ferrari?)

Power would not be down if the leak is only on the cylinder water jacket - however your correct, you would lose power if it was leaking into the combustion chamber, but the pressure would have been low when Jack tested the cylinders.👍

Depending where the crack is... To combustion chamber maybe, but that's oil gallery to coolant chamber. Could increase temperature of oil and coolant.
The lack of power is simply age... Only a rebuild can catch it back if its at this point... Seek professional help while it's apart and get it all crack tested and checked for warping etc...

I expect that was caused by the coolant being to weak & the car left out in freezing weather. Water freezing in the block will crack the head like that but usually the cylinder head is ok & it's the external jacket that splits.

A good engineer will be able to sort the crack, especially with it being a classic car. Gives you a chance to take off the heads and inspect them, inspect the valves/guides and re lap, re-new the valve stem oil seals, skim heads etc. I have had cars in the past that have had niggling power problems that i just could not get to the bottom of. However when i took the cylinder head/s off, and ironed out a number of minor issues in the process, they just went very well afterwards. Sometimes you never get to find or expose a problem like we have all dreamed of, but correcting a lot of minor things that you WILL find when you go through the heads may just sort it. Good luck on your journey my friend x

So far as the disaster channel thing... embrace it. One of the best channels out there is Hoovie's garage... nothing but disasters, automotive and financial. T-shirts, stickers. When you do find the feeler gauge parts, first get a new one and either JB Weld the parts permanently together or peen the nut and screw so they can't be loosened. OR put them all on a loop of solid core wiring for the home and twist. I've had to find a piece of metal the size of a grain of sand that broke away when I snapped a drill bit working on an aircraft. AND prove that it was the piece by fitting it to the other pieces. Persistence and a couple hours later I had it. All of our tools had to be inspected several times for even one use, every time. It took me over a year to figure out a no start on one of my cars, one bank of cams wasn't spinning but the pulley was and looked otherwise fine, timing marks matched up, this did not trip a code since it was not the bank with sensors. So I've been there.

The missing nut from the feeler gauges is probably in the sump.
I once had a piston circlip ping off while fitting it. The crank-case was well-stuffed with rags, so it could not have got in there. Checked the engine, no, not there. Several times. Searched the workshop top to bottom, no sign of it anywhere. Finally found it in the bottom of the crank case, and pulled it out with a magnet.

Decided it needed to be fixed professionally, so I took it to the body shop with the thought that I could fix that and have the bumpers redone. Body shop convinced me to do a bit more. Got it back from them, it looked okay, but weird because a lot of the car looked great but some of it was worn, sooooo we did it all again for a full respray. Got it back a few weeks ago and it is beautiful, though. Finally got it together and out for a test drive yesterday, and thankfully, the wind noise is all gone, LOL.

If it's any consolation, my first proper engine strip down (well since being a teenager) was a 1000cc motorcycle engine on a gravel driveway with no garage or shed. Regrinding valves (20 of them) in my living room etc. It can be disheartening but a Ferrari engine is still 'just' an engine. Access is probably a pain in the bum for manifolds etc but it'll be rewarding when it's done. I ended up doing a head gasket change twice outdoors in the space of a few months (due to a mistake by me). It's very rewarding once you've finished the job though.

A friend busted his radiator and kept driving his F430 Spider "it was just a little bit of steam, didn't think it was serious". He drove till the engine seized up, ignoring the warning lights. He managed to get a new engine out of the insurance company. His old unserviceable engine is now (has been since about 2008) a coffee table at a South London Ferrari Maserati Service Centre! Rumor has it that offers over £20K have been turned down!!
So on the bright side you have the makings of a very cool coffee table.

crack that small can be done with standard tig welding, done a few tvr heads clamped to a solid face to prevent distortion.
dye test crack drill both ends of it and crack on.

Great improvisation with the pump. And a good spot seeing that crack. Rewind back to the tappet shim thickness mod...........you should never sand down a tappet shim in an attempt to reduce it's thickness. Buy the correct shim, they are cheap for what they are. Sanding it down (even on glass) not only reduces the case hardening thickness (which is critically important on the valve stem side), you also loose the parallelism of the faces. This will cause the bucket to cockle in its bore causing premature wear. Please replace that shim before driving the car again. Especially if it's on your good head.

When you have the heads off. Do some DiY porting [inlet, exhaust] and skim the heads. Did it myself on my Alfa 156 and it feels like a different car. I am sure you can find some good info on this. Good Luck and be Happy.

    Good innovation on that pump!
Honestly, just put it back together, put some head gasket seal crap in it and enjoy it. It went fine before.
If you're gonna pull the head you may as well pull the whole engine out, do it on a stand and rebuild the whole thing.

Don't know if you can get them over there but Quickjacks are a huge help for raising and lowering the car frequently. Like a mini lift.
You're a better amateur mechanic than I am but one thing I've learned is that sometimes more disassembly and trouble up front is actually easier than trying to sneak things through holes that aren't really big enough. No idea how bad tilting the engine would actually be, but something to consider.
    Good luck!!!!

Italian cars you HAVE to love them or it’s just not worth the trouble! I removed and installed the forward exhaust manifold TWICE in situ (a must if your removing the engine). Once on my GT4 and once on my GTS. You MUST get a wretched extension of at least 18 inch length (I actually used a 12” extension in combination with a 6”). Highly recommend 1/4” drive not 3/8” as the 1/4” allows just that much more clearance. You’ll need all the clearance you can get. Finally, and very importantly, you need a 13mm socket with an integral universal joint (1/4” drive of course). A standard 13mm socket attached to a separate universal will not work. That’s how tight the clearance is. I did the job twice (plus install) with my cars on jacket stands, so it can be done without a lift (my last install was with my GTS on my lift and it was much easier!). Good luck.

Wow! I sincerely feel your pain. If anything your channel proves the old adage 'there is no such thing as a cheap Ferrari!' . I have learned decades ago that any sport car or exotic needs to be put through a proper 'pre-purchase inspection' by an independent specialist or else.
Honestly, if I were you and depending on your love for the car and deep pockets I would stop now, pull the motor out and consider a complete rebuild so that you can have a proper base point going forward instead of going down a path of unknown mine fields, just my advice. Oh and BTW you never never grind or sand a lash pad to fit, in doing so you are removing the hardened surface and weaken it prematurely! All the best.

No doubt there are constraints involved, but if this were me I would be removing both cylinder heads rather than just one. If the engine has good compression making sure both heads are pressure-tested, cleaned and overhauled, will ensure you are starting with a long engine that is known to be in good health. Not only is this better longer term for your sanity, it also means you can completely eliminate the engine internals as a source of your top-end performance issues. A compression test is done at cranking speed, and whilst it is a good indication of health it doesn't guarantee that when the engine is hot and at higher RPMs the engine has the compression needed to perform at the top-end. Best of luck with it!

Love your dedication to attempt such a task with limited facilities, and I would run with the meme that the head was cracked when you bought it, that’s immensely more manageable in terms of rationalising the problem as far as the brain goes. Well done 👍

Each and every time I consider buying an exotic, like a Ferrari or Lamborghini I always take into consideration the upkeep cost. I drive a car for performance and that's why I drive a C5 ZO6! And I get a compliment each and every day I'm out with my car and I am convinced it is because of how I set up the suspension. I set it up lower in the rear for that exotic look and It truly looks menacing!

I had something similar on an Alfa Romeo Bialbero Engine. The previous owner didn't put enough anti freeze in the coolant. Unfortunately welding didn't work that good, because the crack went too far into the spark plug hole, and the spark of the welding machine was dancing around!
You can try to fix it with that liquid metal compound stuff! A friend of mine used it after the head cracked because the cylinder head bolts holes haven't been blown out, it seems to hold quite well!
I still think your problem is the ignition anticipation mechanism in the distributor ☝🏽
