If the American dream is being able to support a 4 person household on 1 income from a regular job (by todays standards that would be around 35-45k gross), with the wife at home staying with 2 kids, yeah I would say the American dream is dead. As it stands in most populated states, at best you'd basically be living paycheck to paycheck on 1 income in that wage range, so you're effectively required to go the extra mile by either working longer, getting/chasing a better career, having multiple jobs or even a side hustle, none of that was necessary before, and yet it is now. So I can understand peoples frustrations in regards to that.
On that kind of wage your rent for a 3 bedroom in basically 99% of Florida is going to be like 80% of your post tax income....you can see why that is just not sustainable....and rent is increasing every year by 150-300 dollars. I don't even live in a big city, I live almost 2 hours away from orlando and 1.5 hours from Tampa. Meanwhile in the 90s my mom had a similar level job and was able to support 6 people by herself and had enough money to be able to go on 2-3 vacations a year, rent at the time for a 3 bedroom we lived in was 500/mo and she was making around 1400 a month with an office job as the lowest available position. That same job now would be paying maybe 2000/mo post tax but rent for the same house is over 3k....and the best deal you'll find in the entire metropolis is maybe 2600 for a 3/2.
Also, generally I don't think "well move to the middle of nowhere" is a good response. The negativity is there precisely because you didn't NEED to do that before, but now it's basically a requirement to get by for some.
That being said, just because I think its dead doesn't mean I am not going to grind, I will work my ass off, it just should not be like this. If my mom had it that easy in the 90s as a kid born in the 70s and she flopped it that hard, I can't imagine how easy the prior generation or even the one before that had it.
We can sell shiny cardboard on ebay for 100k a year from anywhere. Supply and demand still gotta exist looking at one specific zip code and saying it's more expensive than it was then doesn't make much sense. Moving somewhere cheaper is a completely valid thing.

We live in a world where you can make a full time income flipping shiny cardboard, so I think things are pretty good. I agree with you Dan, most people want to blame external things like political parties, family, friends etc. When they need to look in the mirror and improve their life; because no one else will do it for them.
