Inspires and encourages me to make a 30 year dream become reality. I also think I'm in love with the Tashiba / Baba 40, she's a real beauty of the sea! Thank you Mike, and safe travels
I've watched this video as inspiration when I was saving up for my own boat. I now own a Niagara 42' cutter rigged sloop with designs on similar passages. Very much appreciate all of your sailing videos... Mike .. Canada
Wanted to add..... I must be some kind of freak of nature. I love sailing along and then becalmed a thousand miles from nearest anything. A week or more. I'm simply most happy at sea. Ta Shing in the 1980's built some of the best cruising boats ever made. I had a Mason 44 and loved it. I now have a Hans Christian 33, which was also built in Taiwan during that golden decade of boat-building.
Liked how you gave advice about the day to day stuff. Like what to think about, trouble shooting mechanical probmems, how to think about weather and etc. Gave me a good understanding of how its really is sailing off shore. Cool this is my first video of yours and it made me Sbscribe. I will probably binge watch this weekend peace dude!!
Nice videos, but, you should wear a harness and tether when going topsides alone and when on watch at night. No one thinks a rouge wave will sweep them overboard, until it does and then it's too late.
Castaway Why does everyone feel like youtube posters need the advice of random strangers?? Does he seem like a novice who has no idea what he's doing? I am sure he does more sailing risk mitigation on a daily basis than we will do in our lives....
Yes! He does seem like a novice with no idea of what he's doing. He definitely needs advice for being in weather like that with no harness and for not having control of his crew. He told his "crew" not to touch metal, and to go below decks several times at which he was totally ignored. He's not in control of the situation. It looks precarious at best. So, I would say it's his actions that inspire advice-giving comments. :)
+Castaway You must be high buddy.....there is no crew in this video hence the term singlehanded in the title. I agree, wearing a harness is a prudent safety precaution and will wear one more often in the future.
Mike Rybas I am a retired Green Beret medic.. Cant isn't in the vocabulary.. But there are some physical challenges that get more difficult to tackle with each passing year... It'll work out.. Just wish I would have know of this life when I first retired... Regardless.. we'll cross paths someday!! Thanks for your video!!
Excellent video! I thought that was a Mason 33 the whole video until the end I saw it was a double ender. Is that a Tayana 37 or some other Taiwanese boat? Gorgeous boat.
It's a comment section??? There are a lot of sailing blogs to choose from out there. I wouldn't watch again with that music... feedback helps people making content to reach and keep an audience. If everyone made videos there wouldn't be an audience.
I'm a novice sailor. Would like to know why you motor and risk running out of fuel needed to get through the harbor vs waiting. Was it to avoid a storm? Nice video. Thanks.
I knew unfavorable winds would coincide with my arrival in NZ. I was using the motor in the light winds to make good time and try and beat the 'bad' weather. If I did run out of fuel in the main tank, there was 5 gal jerry jug spare.
Mike Rybas That's good information. I was wondering too. Great videos Mike. Not sure being barefoot is a good idea. I noticed a scar on your ankle with previous surgery stitches and a new cut as well when you were using the drill.
done the odd delivery from tonga ,fiji back to kiwi s.handed, beating the next low coming up from tasy is all ways the plan and im the same i no i should wear the harness but seldom do,nice boat, cant beat a good toasty. good vid mate
Mike Rybas Very kewl!! Yeah, I guess that was a dumb question! I have in-laws in Auckland . . . maybe if the TransAt goes well?!? I subscribed and will watch for your next vid. Any other way to follow you, like a blog, etc.?
OK, I'll check out Instagram. I just sent you a friend request on fb too. I'm in the middle of refitting a Kaiser Gale Force 34 that I bought last June. Great boat that has one crossing under its belt already. I could go as early as June '16 but no later than '18 (probably closer to '18!)
Thanks. The only mount I used was one of the 'flex pod' contraptions than have the legs that bend to any position. They're really useful on a boat because you have a level camera no matter what the angle of heel.
jenserawesome Oh I forgot.......I have a telescoping boat hook pole. The hook broke off one day and I epoxied a go pro mount on the end. The pole extends from about 3' to 8'. Its good for getting 'aerial shots' as well as sticking into the water to get shots of dolphins!
Nice!, very nice! I watch a lot of this shit.... ok sorry...I'm sorry, "stuff"! Very well done! I have archived this as cruising well done! A reference point to, "how to do it right"! Well shot, well presented! That's it .
Kamau Iandiataiyero Top speed is low 8 knotish. But most of the time she sails between 5-7 knots (any slower and I usually start the engine). Pointing much higher than 40 deg apparent is no good.
Absolutely right Daniel. I find this a lot with yacht videos. though I do enjoy most of all that I have seen. By the way That should be lose not loose.

Good stuff. Dig the music/radio mix, the sailing shots and the attitude. Thx

Awesome, Awesome, Awesome!!
At the core of my soul I want to buy a sailboat, and sail around the world. Thanks for your video!
I love seeing men achieve their dreams, it inspires me to achieve my dream of sailing the world. Thanks mate.
What a gorgeous boat!
Thanks for sharing raido messages, helps people that want to go offshore to understand what communication is like.

Yes, great video quality with a nice narrative. Well done....
great video , great boat (Tashiba 40) great guy ,can we have more?
Song sounds a lot like Morcheeba - The Sea [acoustic]. Thanks for the video!
One of the top 10 blue water boat designs of all time in my book. Ta Shing Baba 35 for the wife and I.....
Love the music with the comms - that's a really great feeling.. Switch the AGC to slow and its much less noisy.
Fantastic voyage.Great Video ! More More More Please !
You manage to choose very interesting video shooting angles for your camera. Good camera man skills.
Nice boat :) - and nice video!
Thank you , I really enjoyed your video. Cheers
A yacht and a dog were found sailing alone of the coast of NZ this year. No harness :(
+Paul Copeland
darn dog is taking a risk without harness....
Lol.

I got this video confused with another one. lol
Thanks for that adventure. I really enjoyed it. Good job.
Great video of an amazing passage. Thank you for sharing..
Nice passage; great video - makes me want to get back out there!
This video, like so many others I've watched in the last few months make me realize I have been struck with this bug too late..
I've meet many single handed sailors in their 60's. If you believe you can't, you won't.

It's never too late!
Great video, I’ve always wondered how you update maps.
Very nice yacht mate, what design/length is it? Also, how do you connect to the SSB radio to get the weather faxes, I would be interested in that
Excellent video! I thought that was a Mason 33 the whole video until the end I saw it was a double ender. Is that a Tayana 37 or some other Taiwanese boat? Gorgeous boat.
It’s a Tashiba 40 (aka Baba 40) built in Taiwan in ‘86. The boat is is in good hands with new NZ owners.
another awesome video..good job
Nice video. All of these complainers and advice-givers should shut up and go make their own sailing videos.
It's a comment section??? There are a lot of sailing blogs to choose from out there. I wouldn't watch again with that music... feedback helps people making content to reach and keep an audience. If everyone made videos there wouldn't be an audience.
Hey!! Good job. Keep up the good work :)
I notice you are using a running back stay. Is that Dyneema? How hard did you tension? thanks, john
Nicely done.
Great vid man!!
thanks - makes sense
Great vid, thanks

Great vid Mike! I'm planning a singlehanded TransAt, would love to pick your brain. Noticed your hailing port, are you still in Philly?
Thanks Neil. I'm still in NZ, but departing soon for Fiji.
Mike Rybas Very kewl!! Yeah, I guess that was a dumb question!
I have in-laws in Auckland . . . maybe if the TransAt goes well?!? I subscribed and will watch for your next vid. Any other way to follow you, like a blog, etc.?
No I'm a bit too lazy too keep up with a blog. I put photos on Instagram @sailwest. When are you doing the TransAt? What boat are you doing it on?
OK, I'll check out Instagram. I just sent you a friend request on fb too. I'm in the middle of refitting a Kaiser Gale Force 34 that I bought last June. Great boat that has one crossing under its belt already. I could go as early as June '16 but no later than '18 (probably closer to '18!)
what kind of mounts did you use for the different shots? great video by the way
Thanks. The only mount I used was one of the 'flex pod' contraptions than have the legs that bend to any position. They're really useful on a boat because you have a level camera no matter what the angle of heel.
really? thats amazing versatile. but thanks for the quick answer :)

Any video of sailing towards Antarctica from New Zealand, or is it disallowed? This world is a terrarium, not a planet!
What kind of boat ?
Nice, man!

How much is each chart download?
Radio traffic in beginning and techno music throughout was just to much for me. Sorry
That is literally why I've watched this vid over and over
Nice vid, great music. What kind of boat is she?
Thanks! The boat is a 1986 Tashiba 40 also know as a Baba 40.
Mike Rybas
Classic Bob Perry boat. Very nice. Whats her top speed and point of sail?
Kamau Iandiataiyero Top speed is low 8 knotish. But most of the time she sails between 5-7 knots (any slower and I usually start the engine). Pointing much higher than 40 deg apparent is no good.
+Mike Rybas Bob Perry design.. which one?
Tashiba?
Baba?
+Francesco cappelletti tashiba 40

Haha applenutbutter my fav
What app for the iPad was that?
'HF Fax' by Black Cat
Loose the music. It is difficult to hear and understand what you are saying.
Absolutely right Daniel. I find this a lot with yacht videos. though I do enjoy most of all that I have seen.
By the way That should be lose not loose.
Too much poor music
Annoying sound, boring content
Great sailing, awful music.
