- Sailing single handed for New Zealand to Fiji in May 2015. The boat is a 1986 Tashiba 40, that was sold in Fiji Sept 2015. I'm currently a land lubber, watching UA-cam sailing videos and saving for the next boat!
Less music and more narration...loved your underwater pictures.. living the life brother ❤️
I found the music very distracting too. Cool vid otherwise. I only follow solo sailors now...not interested in fake "WE ALMOST SANK OUR BOAT!!!!!!" BS.
This was fantastic! Thank you for posting this! I have been dreaming of doing some sailing, but would never be brave enough to do such a long trip. I am happy that I got to live it just a bit through your eyes.
I discovered Jon & Roy through this video, now I listen to them pretty much every day. Loved watching your other vids, have fun out there! Hopefully you'll grace New Zealand's shores again soon
You're an extremely talented Cinematographer... Very high quality product.

Thanks Bob! She's a fine boat, so it wasn't hard work!
A lovely watch. About to buy a boat for first time in over 20 years. Vids like yours have inspired me to do so. Fair winds mate!
Thank you for taking me with you on this trip, enjoyed it a lot!
Watched this a few times now and just shared on Facebook. A wonderful short film, beautifully shot and great music. Looks like you had an amazing time!
Great Vid Mike. I like how you captured the rolls in the Ocean. It shows a realistic point of view, that's not for everybody. I hope to see more Video from you. Live the life Brother. Tight lines, Full sails and dang it, that was a flippin' incredible looking salad !!!
Very nicely done Brother! I watch a lot of these sailing and Livabaord videos and it's amazing how you can pick up on people's vibes....great channel! See you on the high seas!

+Kate Martin
Thanks Kate! I'm boatless right now, but hope to remedy the situation ASAP!
Awesome man... so competent. Fearless. Love it. I'm not so sure I'd jump out of a perfectly good boat to go spearfishing when nobody is topside. I think that would take some getting used to. Hell, just going out of sight of land would take a major change of mindset in this landlubber. Love the video. Will subscribe now. Cheers from Thailand!
Music is awesome! mountain town - jon and roy thank you. lovely
Really good video, great pace, nice shots. What a great single handed sailing trip
Awesome trip Mike. Thanks for the share.

Great video! In the process of doing the same! Hopefully sooner then later! Just really like seeing people taking the leap! Great job! Your Boat looks super nice as well! Really a good size boat! And to be single handing But, hey it's nice to have the space! Anyway keep enjoying the life, and be safe! Maybe we'll cross paths someday!
43 years ago this voyage was far more dangerous. Then there were no weather faxes, weather forecasts were unreliable, and you didn't know where you were, due to the lack of GPS. The voyage nearly killed us, and it did kill the friend I towed out of harbor.
Nice editing. Really enjoyed your video. Thanks for sharing.
What a good video man, Nice edits. Very entertaining
great video, especially the underwater and masthead shots. well done!
Awesome video Mike! Would have bee great to see some footage of the surf in Fiji though...
Thanks for the addition to my inspiration files while I save up...
I've been building sailboats for years, and never had any interest in sailing until recently. This looks comfy.

Very inspirational that you did this alone! -Amanda

+Mike Rybas, yeah weddings always a good wind forecasting indicator
I enjoyed 2 of your videos. Not sure if you have any more.
Great to see your Toshiba 40 under sail and cruising at hull speed.
5 years have passed. Are you back on the water in a new boat?

That must of been such a pain to get some of those shots, like the under water ones looking up at the sail.

Sailing alone is always nice.
Great camera work - unique views!
Excellent cinematography.
Enjoyed your video.
Do you need to wake up all night when alone??
What does sailor often do when there's no visibility??
hi Mike, I watched your video , its 2020 , March already. pretty cool your video or better , your trip as such.
I am very interested to see more of it , hopefully soon. By the way, I consider the Tashiba 40 my choice , if sailing blue water. What were your impressions, why look for another vessel? It seems perfect for a single hander.
wish you all the best , hope to hear. thanks for sharing!
Nice.
Bula...nice video bro.
I just saw your channel and subscribe quickly.. YOLO😊😊
great video. binaca. you must have sailed through the Yasawas. how was the sea waves. how much fuel u burnt one way.
awesome.i always wonder which bout is fasster..a big one or 24 26 feet? how many days it takes get fiji with a small one?
Hey mike, late to the party but wanted to ask you. How do you like your baba 40? Wife and I are looking at a baba 40, hans christian 38 and a Mason 44. Quality wise I think the tashing built boats are a bit better then the HC. I currently own a HC 33, love it but need more space..... I'm leaning towards the baba, just wanted to get your opinion on it since you own one
Tour of the boat would have been nice, and your thoughts about how it handled, if you had a preference for that keel design, etc. Also, whats the camera you were using? And for underwater shots its dragged at the end of a stick? If you sailed alone, who were the people who suddenly appeared for dinner?
The boat was solid and easy to sail single handed. I don't have a lot of experience sailing other boats, so don't have good references for comparison. Cameras were a Gopro, entry level Nikon DSLR (forget the model), and I-pad. The underwater shots were a GoPro mounted to a telescoping boat hook pole.
The sudden appearance of people was when I anchored at Minerva Reef and met up with friends aboard SV Cavalo: facebook.com/cavaloatsea/ I had a bunch of diving for lobster and kiteboarding footage from Minerva, but the GoPro took a shit and lost all the video :(
Great video, really!! What video equipment (hardware and Software) do you use please?
Also, make some more!!!
Thanks Andres. I use a gopro and Nikon D5300 and edit with iMovie.
Mike, nice video. A good variation of shots and scenes, I was hoping for more vid's. That Tashiba 40 looked like a nice boat, I'm real curious on why you didn't keep her? Also, what type of roller boom was that and did you like the way it operated?Cheers, Ray
+ray Nic
Hi Ray. I only owned 1/2 of the boat, the other owner (brother) hadn't been on the boat in a couple years, so it was time to sell. The boom furling was a Leisure Furl, installed by the previous owner. It worked quite well.
