I did the exact same thing when I discharged.
    Except I was a Marine.
...and I drove an old Toyota from Camp Pendleton to Fresno.
...and it only took 7 hours.
But I headed north just like you!
Great video. Thanks for the upload

Extraordinary. Facing the storm or the problems of life, the character of the man is strengthened as well as the experience of life. Congratulations buddy ... and thanks for sharing by these means the voyage just like Drake does ... that inspires reflection and adventure ...

One of the reasons I asked about your crew is..."I am a completely different sailor when my girls are aboard!" so thought they were filming for you. Whoever they have a pretty steady hand. Your finished product is very impressive...very nice work, really great video. Have followed Drake/Mo for a long time, and yes Drake is an inspiration to us all. Hope YOU keep posting, as people like you keep the wing and the salt spray in our hearts. Are you based in NY?. Fair winds Buddy and keep us posted.

Love the PT fleece cap. I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I have been to most of the places you went on your voyage but never from that perspective. Recently I have taken a keen interest in sailing and I have read through some of the most recommended books on sailing (an old army habit, death by power-point). My wife and I have planned on taking a day sailing course soon to see if we truly enjoy it. Again thank you.

Adam, kudos on the discipline to film and produce the journey! Am retired Army and a Cape Dory skipper, lake-bound at present. Good choice to keep the Army gear nearby for cold weather, yay!

Great job man! My buddy and I did almost the exact same thing after we got out of the Marines last year. I sailed from New Bern, NC to Palm Coast, FL. He sailed from New Bern to Charleston, SC.

We just posted our video about sailing NYC and the East River and was glad to have help learning about the currents in the area. We posted everything we learned in the video - but boy did we love ticking this iconic sail off our bucketlist!

I'd crew on your boat any time.

Great video!!! Drake Roberts is my inspiration also. I just purchased a Pearson 35 and today was my first day starting to work on her. Am going to film the complete adventure from restoring to cruising. Stay Tuned!

Hey? What a great Vid!!! Most vid's i see are clear weather sailing but your's gives a different perspective. Thanks soo much for posting! I was able to see that you can not prepare for all contingincies but if you have a little imagination you can over-come most. Anyway a great vid! Congrads on joining the "real' world again. And Thank you very much for your service.
lol because you stepped up I didn't have to. Besides I did my stint '69 to '77 USMC. A wing wiper but did my time too. Thx again for posting. Rhonda

My god! if you had time to wait it out for favorable weather this entire delivery could have been a dreamy tranquil experience and less of an seat of your pants adventure! Perfect example not to put a time frame on charting a passage. I bet the owners were freaking happy for such a timely delivery.

I followed the ICW and chose the Virgina Cut route to Norfolk. I have done the Dismal Swamp canal once and Virgina Cut route four times. I find them both wonderful routes and I hope I find my way back sooner than later. Thanks for watching and Drake should start posting his episodes soon!

Great vid. I've done that trip a few times and really like sailing the eastern seaboard, out to Bermuda, and down to the Caribbean. If you're ever down in Annapolis, we have a great contingent of sailors ready to hit the high seas. Cheers.

Great Video, I retired out of the Navy in 2008 and have been planning a similar trip. Recently sold my 22 Catalina to spend time with my daughters in Colorado this winter. I am now looking for a Ketch to live aboard next year and do some traveling without shore patrol!! Thanks for sharing your video. Bobby

    • @TheCapedory
      @TheCapedory  11 років тому

      Hi Robert,
I really like having a Ketch, the balanced sailplan allows me to avoid excessive heel during heavy winds with the kids aboard. Most times I don't bother with reefing the main, I just drop it. Good luck with your search, Congrats on your retirement, you should be out there already! Just do it.

If you are poking around in Long Island Sound,,, a beautiful, well protected place to throw out the hook is the sand hole outside Oyster Bay LI... 40°56'25.03"N 73°29'22.29"W
Tricky to enter, but the perfect place to sleep the night after coming up from Brooklyn.

I saw you on one of Drake's videos. You were crewing with him and Mo I think, from N/C to NY? correct me if I have that wrong. Was that your first occasion to crew? How did you guys meet? You came across as a very impressive person.......smart, and easy going. Now you are solo sailing? You are living my dream. Are you still in the service, or out ...free, to sail where your heart takes you. I take it you are not encumbered with wife and kids, so are FREE to go when and where you want. Awesome!

Hi Adam, came here from Drake's channel :)
A little critique on the movie making: Maybe take more time in each shot for us to see what it is and to give yourself more time to narrate. Seriously consider getting a clip-on wireless microphone that handles the wind well. Back off the volume on the background music a little. .....but, to be fair, Drake does do a really good job and is a tough act to follow.
Don't give up soldier!! ....I mean civilian ;)

I really enjoyed the video. Thank you so much for posting. I am a fellow Army veteran who likes to sail! The highest resolution is 360p. Any chance of releasing a high definition version? I feel I am missing out on your beautiful cinematography. I highly recommend Navionics for your smartphone as a backup to the chart plotter. You mentioned being on a schedule. Why did you have to get the boat up there at a certain time?

It is probably my ignorance and lack of experience but I didn't get that worried. It was my first time having to work on deck, at night, and making 6.3kts having to lower my double reefed main. I am a completely different sailor when my girls are aboard! The slightest new creek warrants immediate investigation.
    Thanks for watching!

Thanks Christopher! I never intended to publish a 15min video, so uploading took some time. I will look into publishing higher quality. I had several inflexible obligations this summer with the new job and relocating. If I didn't make it back I might have had to redo a bunch of clearing paperwork...days of waiting in lines!

I'm thinking of retiring to Oriental or New Bern, North Carolina, in about a year. I'm from NC but haven't spent time in either city. What are your thoughts about both? How's the sailing out of New Bern or Oriental? I live and sail in Alaska but was raised in NC. Dad was retired military so we moved around a lot. Thanks for the video!
