I enjoyed this! I am so glad You chose to post this, it felt very relatable to me! This is how 99.5% of my sewing goes! I appreciate learning all Your tips and tricks. Even with all the "adventures" You landed with a Magnificent Jacket Extraordinaire! Beautiful work, Fabulous Make. Thank You for sharing 🙏❤🌸
OMG I love your attitude and your knowledge to problem solve and just do things your way. I would have thrown up my hands and said forget it. You are teaching me to just push through it. I love the finished product. Look forward to each of your videos, I also love how you are not afraid to use different fabric choices no matter what the pattern calls. Thank you!
love the style of the pattern but I would have used a navy blue guipure lace to show the colour of the lining through . I love the navy horse chain fabric I remember it from the 80s it's always classic .
Gotta come back and let you know that one of the reasons that I love your videos is because you show us NOT to panic when something goes amiss, but to analyze what's happening and sort out a solution and NOT GIVE UP! Thank you for sharing all the things that go wrong and how to fix them.😍
Thanks Kathleen!! So true. If I never showed my makes that had issues, I don't think I'd have any videos! :) All one step at a time. Thanks for watching
Finally the other shoe dropped. 👡👠👢 I have been waiting since you discovered your sleeve mishap for you to decide to deal with it, and here it is! Sometimes ultra talented folks like you can handle the “whatevers “ that mar your creative efforts, but sometimes deep inside you hear that little voice saying, “I can fix that, I should fix that” ,and fix it you do. I have been sewing most of my life, and I have never and I mean never made the perfect garment without any mistakes of things that could have been done better. My hat’s off to you for pushing through and ending with a beautiful unique jacket. This is real life where the rubber meets the road home sewing that I appreciate.
Your coat is the bomb. I thought the pattern would not fair well made of corduroy and lined. It is fantastic. I want it!!!! These are your colors. I want that fabric. Enjoy!!!!!
Oh bless your heart, I’m up to the vent issue in the video, I can only commiserate as stuff happens during the creative process, but this is amazing and I doubt anyone would have the effrontery to call you on it, wear it well my friend 🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷😘
You look so beautiful in that gorgeous coat! High score for fabric choice and finishing touches. I like that it doesnt do matching buttons and it has ribbons in different colors. It had a luxurious gypsy vintage look.
I love it when you make mistakes! Watching you overcome them is exciting and they make your sewing so relatable 😝 Never worry about posting a vid with mistakes in it. It adds to the adventure. I love the coat. There’s something very _Hogwarts-ish_ about it. It’s fabulous.
That is one hell of a coat but I think you should proud to wear it in the cooler months. I loved the closures. Glad you posted this showing all the things that happened. Hope the chick makes it though the week. x
Thanks for sharing your baby chicken, so cute. I wish I had half your knowledge of sewing. You amaze me how you know what to do when things just don't go right.
Wonderful instructions. I really like this pattern for a loose coat. Being kinda cheap I will find a blouse that is close enough and just add the tiers. Thanks so much. It looks marvellous. Perfect for my boho crone style.
It’s not only a funky coat but it has a Versace touch with the fabric. I think is adorable. Wear it with pride. PS: never give up and learn from your mistakes.
I love the jacket and am enjoying all your videos! I have learned a few things! Don’t sweat the small stuff, your determination shows everyone they shouldn’t give up and to be creative!
Marie, I feel so encouraged! Cuffs are my nemesis and I felt all the feelings when you realised what you'd done!! This was a fun video and I had lots of giggles...forgive me! My most recent make was almost thrown in the bin because I wasn't reading the instructions properly and just assumed I knew what I was doing...uhhh, no. But, we persevere!! And like you, I am super happy with the end result. You better make sure you hit EVERY festival and get as much wear out of that masterpiece as possible. The folkworld needs to see what you've created! xxx
No no, please feel free to laugh at my mistakes. I really try to also! So much better than crying :) So glad you didn't toss your project out! But sometimes a step away from it and a glass or cup of something is in order before you go back to it! Thank you so much!!
I love the way you match fabric to pattern. The coat is stunning. I have made this very same mistake. Did not realize it until the shirt was completely finished. Lesson learned.
Wow it really came out quite lovely!! You could be a wizard or fortune teller with no problem! I love it. I so like all your tricks to fix problems such as the little patch at the crossroads of the sleeve seams.
Good for you for following thru. I have a plaid flannel shirt with lace insets & did the same exact thing on the cuffs but it remains “in that pile”. Besides...now you get to admire the beautiful buttons all the time - lol
Thank you! About a year ago I spent a month working through "that pile." Felt like a Marie Kondo time. And some things had been in there so long they no longer "sparked joy" so they were just gotten rid of. Therapeudic. Thank you for watching!
Despite all your trials and tribulations you've ended up with a garment Stevie Nicks would be proud to wear! 😍 As another UA-camr says: "We never stop making mistakes, we just get better at fixing them" and my goodness, you're supremely good at fixing things! 👍 I hope Aggie grows up strong and happy too. Thanks for sharing x
I definitely love the way you do things. I love seeing the little Bantam chicken Aggie. I love your farm. I’m so like you I March to my own drum beat and guest what if someone doesn’t like Oh Well! It’s important for you to do you. Geaux Girl. Kris
Thank you Kris!! I definitely have an unorthodox style at times. But the coat makes me happy, Aggie is well and with the mama hen now. :) Thanks for watching!
A beautiful coat and the outcome is more important than whether everything is perfect. I recently made myself a long sleeved blouse and was so excited when I was nearly finished. I put it on to preen for my husband and realised the sleeves were in backwards, the vents were in front. I have to take sleeves out and re-insert the them. Perhaps the waistline of the lining could have been the same width as the top tier and the hem, the same width as the bottom tier. That would make it less full at the waist. The sleeve lining attached to the bodice lining would make less bulk at the armhole then the sleeve could be attached to the fashion fabric at the cuff before the vent was created. Thanks for sharing your journey, I enjoyed watching your video..
I have that pattern and I will definitely try to make it and will use a different fabric (heavier) than I would have before I watched your video. The skirt will dance. It would be great to go shopping at open air street farmers market, would be nice. I really do like. I nearly always change patterns in many ways. And mostly I am happy with result. I think many big 4 patterns think all women are 5"10". Great video!
LOL!!!! I wouldn't worry about the vent issue. Since it's probably going to be a cold weather coat, maybe you could use the vent opening to put your thumb through to cover your hands more. Lemonade from lemons girl!😁👍 Just love your videos!!!💖🤗
Well done it's got an 18th century dress coat vibe . Your patience is excellent. I've thrown items across my sewing room when I get frustrated when something is not going as stated lol then gone back after a break to rectify . Beautiful style probably better in damask silk or taffeta . I hope the little chic is OK very chirpie sooooo cute .
I would love to see it if you do!! Aggie is doing great! I got the mama hen to accept her yesterday and she is trotting around the yard with the others now :)
Love watching you make things and how we see if things go wrong like they would for us, and how you manage to sort it out. I like the coat but wonder if I would ever make it. Glad the chick is ok. Xx
Oh my goodness, Marie! The jacket is way too cute!! I love the combination of corduroys and all the trims!!! I really admire how you navigated your way through all the challenges on this project! I’m not sure I could have done that but after watching you maybe I can. It’s going to be such a fun piece to wear. Loved seeing sweet little Aggie. Hope she is doing well!! Thanks again for a great video!!😊🐥
Hi Mia! Thank you :) I just put everything in a pile and thought, that looks fun. I think I'll use it all!! And there you go. It's not really hard, just a bunch of steps. You can do it :)
You have a flare for the dramatic and can pull it off. Thanks for posting the garment. I enjoy you so much and it’s interesting to see how people pick fabric for a design. I like the coat but I’m sure I would not be able to explain to people why I had my housecoat on at the store. You with your red hair and green eyes will look like a princess while myself who looks like queen of England I just don’t have the style. Thank you so much for all your effort that blesses me.
You remind me that lemons make lemonade. So I should stop frustrating myself. The coat is beautiful. I think I'll make one of own. You may get a video of the process.
Marie, I know what you mean I had tried to power through a Migraine and make my Holiday Blouse I took my Pain Meds and it was an Oppsy ..but one Flaw turned nice detail was the asymmetric bottom but Yup some meds and sewing are a no mix But the Jacket is Awesome and the base fabric is beautiful with the ruffles
I had serious doubts during the process Marie...but I absolutely love the results. It looks so nice on you! Great job, as usual. Hoping good things for Aggie. Suzanne
I’m so glad you decided to post this video I made this pattern last year in a linen blend with a directional yellow printed rose on it I had so many problems with what you’d think is a straight forward pattern I thought the amount of material the pattern plus an extra meter (for another project) I’m so glad I bought the extra Problem number one I hadn’t realised that The pattern tells you to cut the second tier across the width of the fabric and not the length like all the other pieces - with a nap I needed more than asked for and that full extra meter Problem number two the base of the bodice takes the weight of all that material in the tiers My bodice just wanted to distort all the time I would recommend with a mid weight light to no structure material that you reinforce the bodice and the neck as much as you possibly can As a result of the movement from my fabric when it came to doing the fold back along the centre front I found it had moved into the gathering. So of course it wouldn’t lay straight and looked awful Problem number three I ended up adding a button and button hole plaque to each side just to get a straight edge that sat nicely Problem number four as you mention Marie this is a huge and heavy garment. There is so much ease in the bodice and adding the plaques didn’t help either. I would sincerely suggest going down a size. I would also suggest using a structured fabric like the corduroy if your machine can take it or sticking to the chiffon type fabric on the pattern cover. I’m glad you persevered Marie I did too but I have to admit I’m not that happy with the outcome Point being never again!!!!!
Oh My! So may issues on your project. So sorry to hear that. After reading your comment, I think all the extra stitching with the ribbon on mine helped to support and stabilize the bodice seam. Maybe. Thank you for watching though!
Oooohhh! LOVE the blue & green ribbons. How cute are those snaffle bit buttons, but it’s too bad you didn’t have enough. What about some hand or machine embroidery on that solid black section? I was thinking it was at the top. Might be too much in the middle though. 😄 Clever way to adjust your already cut out pockets! It’s your garment, so you can make it however you want.😉 Those unique gold buttons are beautiful! You are creating an interpretation of this pattern, not a replication of it.👏 I am all about making the choices that work for us in life.☺️ It’s fabulous! Might make a nice dressing gown for a chilly fall evening after dinner/ dishes & all chores are done.🤷♀️
Thank you Norma! And yes I think that I will be getting a lot of cozy use out of it soon :) I actually almost made the whole dark part embellished with a gold braid design... almost
Oh no. I just gasped when I saw the sleeve openings are in the front. I did that once a long time ago. I finished the garment and I did wear it but not very often. That coat is amazing. You have such patience.
This coat thingy is quite the learning experience 😀I think you should put a little bead or button or patch on the collar weak point just to go all the way with fun.
I know right! I was so close to putting gold braid and more ribbon on it but I had to restrain myself until the reveal video. But I can always add more now :)
Hope to make your allergy day better. As a plant taxonomist, it is NOT the goldenrod or asters, etc. Anything insect pollinated has waxy pollen to stick to the insect and therefore it does not get into the air. You probably are encountering ragweed which is wind pollinated and thus does readily get into the air. During undergraduate days at WVU, I played oboe in the WVU Wind Symphony and Symphony Orchestra. We wore black for concerts. I made a 2 piece skirt and blousen top outfit out of black mohair fabric--a luxurious squishy and loopy knit backed one. The top had a 22" neck zipper down the back. I managed to completely sew it in with the tab facing inside. It took me forever to find the black thread and pick that zipper out of the back of that top. I have never put in another zipper wrong side out.
Oh my goodness, picking out that thread must have been a challenge :) Feeling much better! It was just a one day thing so whatever it was has hopefully blown through. Thanks for the information!
@@mybucoliclife Sniff. What happened to the couture chanel jacket videos? I bought all the pieces and went to rewatch them to gird my loins for the herculean effort I am about to undertake.....and they are GONE! *throws herself dramatically over her Queen treadle machine, sliding to the floor in a puddle of despair *
@@carolineedmistoncooki3fair631 No they are still here! ua-cam.com/video/YNNJrqNESy0/v-deo.html And the new series starts Sunday making it the Couture way, if you can wait 2 more days!
I got excited. But no, those are for the grey/silver jacket. I was hoping for the pink one. With all the hand quilting and thread marking. It was so amazing. And I needs it. NEEDS IT. to hold my hand.
It really doesn’t matter if your buttons don’t match. If you have a garment with any number of required buttons they can be all different. A fashion statement
Gorgeous coat, how much fabric did you used and where did you buy it? I love your sew alongs I always learn something I liked the way you lined the coat kudos to you 👏🏻
I used... a bunch (I honestly didn't measure) and I bought it... in a parking lot from someone who was selling their fabric stash on facebook marketplace, so I have absolutely no idea where to find more! (Feeling like a totally unhelpful person over here, sorry about that)
I lived with a woman for 16 years, she went to college for fashion. Every garment she made, she had to alter the pattern. The pattern ended up being more of the altered trace paper than that of the original pattern. I asked her why even buy the pattern? She said it just gave her a starting point, she also said these patterns are nothing more than someone else's idea of what the garment should look like. So she had her own version of what she wanted the garment to do or look like. So, what you're showing us is HOW to alter these patterns and where the alternations should take place. People need to alter these patterns, you alternations are far more educational than trace, cut and sew. Never feel you need to follow a pattern to the tee. If you make a video following the pattern to the letter, well it will be pretty boring. As you know I'm just learning on how to read patterns and sew garments by the patterns. By you making the alternations you do, shows us how the patterns really work, more like a 3 dimensional look, learning faster this way, than if you just simply went by the book shall we say. You're the Bob Fowler of sewing, what he shows us on the workings of the sewing machine, you do with patterns.
You did. I bought it so many years ago there isn't a label anymore but it is a braided fishing line. Really smooth, strong and friction-less so it pulls through tough stuff easily. I can't give you a name, but next time you are in a store with a fishing section take a peak.

Thank you so much! You know, once I changed the cuff I think it is fine. Stylistic options and all that! :)
I had serious doubts during the process Marie...but I absolutely love the results. It looks so nice on you! Great job, as usual. Hoping good things for Aggie.
Suzanne
You're not the only one who had doubts😂 Thank you!!
I’m so glad you decided to post this video
I made this pattern last year in a linen blend with a directional yellow printed rose on it
I had so many problems with what you’d think is a straight forward pattern
I thought the amount of material the pattern plus an extra meter (for another project) I’m so glad I bought the extra
Problem number one I hadn’t realised that The pattern tells you to cut the second tier across the width of the fabric and not the length like all the other pieces - with a nap I needed more than asked for and that full extra meter
Problem number two the base of the bodice takes the weight of all that material in the tiers
My bodice just wanted to distort all the time
I would recommend with a mid weight light to no structure material that you reinforce the bodice and the neck as much as you possibly can
As a result of the movement from my fabric when it came to doing the fold back along the centre front I found it had moved into the gathering. So of course it wouldn’t lay straight and looked awful
Problem number three I ended up adding a button and button hole plaque to each side just to get a straight edge that sat nicely
Problem number four as you mention Marie this is a huge and heavy garment. There is so much ease in the bodice and adding the plaques didn’t help either. I would sincerely suggest going down a size.
I would also suggest using a structured fabric like the corduroy if your machine can take it or sticking to the chiffon type fabric on the pattern cover.
I’m glad you persevered Marie I did too but I have to admit I’m not that happy with the outcome
Point being never again!!!!!
And yes I think that I will be getting a lot of cozy use out of it soon :) I actually almost made the whole dark part embellished with a gold braid design... almost
Loved this project. Is so my style . Great job
Thank you Betty!
Love the folky vibe! How funny that the image on the pattern also had the vents the same way! Always look forward to your videos
Thank you! :) :)
Oh no. I just gasped when I saw the sleeve openings are in the front. I did that once a long time ago. I finished the garment and I did wear it but not very often. That coat is amazing. You have such patience.
😁 I've decided I usually am wearing it around my home as a glamorous house coat with the sleeves turned up, so nobody sees them 🤣🤣
@@mybucoliclife Roll up those sleeves and wherever you want. It really is beautiful
If Stevie Nicks & Ralph Lauren had a baby it would look like this coat lol
Prize for favorite funny comment! Thank you so much :)
This coat thingy is quite the learning experience 😀I think you should put a little bead or button or patch on the collar weak point just to go all the way with fun.
I know right! I was so close to putting gold braid and more ribbon on it but I had to restrain myself until the reveal video. But I can always add more now :)
OMG. So jealous of all the hummingbirds you get!!! Didn't get even one this year :(
They drain the feeders every day. So fun to watch!!
Darling, ALL the supers are wearing front sleeve vents this season. It is a design element!
Indeed it IS Caroline. Indeed it is! :)
@@carolineedmistoncooki3fair631 No they are still here! ua-cam.com/video/YNNJrqNESy0/v-deo.html
And the new series starts Sunday making it the Couture way, if you can wait 2 more days!
I got excited. But no, those are for the grey/silver jacket. I was hoping for the pink one. With all the hand quilting and thread marking. It was so amazing. And I needs it. NEEDS IT. to hold my hand.
@@carolineedmistoncooki3fair631 I put out the pink skirt one earlier. The pink jacket, for the first time :) starts Sunday. Keep Breathing!!!
I also think it would be cute if you left the bottom tier off and do a shorter style.
Yes! That would be cute. Much less fabric too :)
It really doesn’t matter if your buttons don’t match. If you have a garment with any number of required buttons they can be all different. A fashion statement
Thank you! Yes! Use all the pretty buttons :)
Thanks !! Please keep the update’s on bantam chicken.
She is doing great! The mama accepted her and all is well. Thanks!
This is fabulous! How is Aggie Chick doing?
It turned out really good. Stevie?
Thanks!!!
(Feeling like a totally unhelpful person over here, sorry about that)
❤️❤️❤️
❤
This speaks to the 'gypsy' in me! Enjoy!
Yes! yes it does! Such drama and freedom :)

Did I hear you right? Did you say "fishing line"?
You did. I bought it so many years ago there isn't a label anymore but it is a braided fishing line. Really smooth, strong and friction-less so it pulls through tough stuff easily. I can't give you a name, but next time you are in a store with a fishing section take a peak.
