After posting, Ben from 2nd Dynasty replied to some of my questions:
1. Upper windows actually have a slot in them for a window [I completely missed this feature].
2. The Chimera series (including the Cerberus version) is not an official Traveller ship [but obviously can be used for the game].
3. The Chimera was updated with the Odyssey that fixed the stability issues. www.myminifactory.com/frontier/starship-odyssey-1503 The Cerberus is an older version that may be updated in the future.
4. Having many separate parts makes for greater modularity and ability to customize ships.
The update is ongoing actually. We put out a very loose alpha version today with the new structural elements, but we are a long way off updated instructions. The mods include:
1. an easier way to attach the top deck (no more loose bulkheads), including two additional clip holes on either side for the tail section
2. Fixed a few clip hole issues, particularly with the 'ribs' where the openlock ports were missing important geometry
3. Added the first three build plates to the lower deck
4. Removing floors with built in supports and replacing them with ones that print on their side for better quality.
5. Added the clips and clip variants.
6. Added ladder wells from Odyssey, will be adding things like machine shop printers, medlab tables, etc that can fit into the Odyssey style bulkheads instead of being built into the floor for better modularity and ease of painting
7. Minor changes to layout to accommodate these changes.
The full update will take weeks to properly implement and we have a lot on the schedule, but it will be free for all Cerberus owners, so no hindrance from buying now.
Thank you so much for this awesome build! I love it!
So this a second dynasty original design, its not part of their licensed Traveller line. once you get familiar with the rules (you'll need the book High Guard) you can design this ship from scratch yourself with Traveller rules...in the interim just use the Patrol Corvette stats..SDB's dont have Jump Drives,,,(they do but its a seperate shuttle that attaches) Awesome job ..been playing Traveller since the early 80's and have all Ben's licensed designs and few others . Not this one thou so it amazing to see it fully realized.
Awesooooome !!! Very good craft for core space game !!!!!!!!!!! I want to print this starship !!!
Love it! I've been sitting on the original Chimera for ages, but haven't gotten around to printing her. Your video really puts these ships into perspective, so might just dust off the old stls...
Impressive... very impressive
That looks absolutely amazing. I love their work. Love your painting too. I’m slowly designing a Predator ship (started up as a collab with another creator). It’s quite a fun process. I used to play Travellers way back in the days. Great RPG.
For the decal, I suggest sponging it randomly with the blue you used. I have plastic welded a sword. It’s ugly at first, but with some sanding. Maybe plastic weld the bottom parts and a bit of the angled down lower sides to minimize the welding scars.
Fantastic work ❤
Very nice work!
Look at the elevators - sweet.
IF you ever print another one, besides fusing the parts in CAD, add support rid channels. They will keep it from flexing under its own weight. I normally use wood dowels or fiberglass driveway markers. Both are dirt cheap and available at any hardware store. To speed up painting project like this, get a cheap single action brush. Harbot Freight does a set that has 6 quick change bottles. You don't have as much control for fine details but for terrain they are the only way to go.
I discovered you after seeing your page on the 2nd Dynasty live stream. so glad I did.
Great model, great build.
Awesome build love the paint job. Im in the middle of building a version of the Chimera myself for a starfinder game. With the Chimera being modular it was perfect for the home ship concept I wanted to go for. I highly recommend looking at some of their add-ons for other ships. As they are prefect for kit bashing upgrades and new configurations as players progress.
Nice build! If I'd had the means of getting one of these myself, I'd use this model as my flagship for a campaign of Five Parsecs from Home. 😁
Huge!
That is BAD A$$!!!!!!! LOVE IT!!!!!!! Your players are SOOOOOOOOO LUCKY!!!!!
That is danged impressive.
I have circled the Cerberus a few times... if I were running a Traveller game, I would be all over it. (I have a back burner plan for a Salvage campaign.)
Ben provided a 20% discount code for my Patreon supporters if you want to jump in on it.
Amazing ship.
Wow that is super cool and perfect for traveller :)
Impressive….so nice
That's so cool! I'd love to see a video highlighting different makers and their models. I randomly found @martin on Printables. He's created a lot of spaceships from different shows. I'd like to find more makers like him to support their work. What's neat is his models are color coded so you don't have to paint if you don't want to. Just print in different colors. No AMS/MMU needed too.
Just took a look--love the fact that he separated out sections so you can print in different filament colors like you mentioned. Also I like his Expanse ships too! Thanks for the shoutout.
Looks like a good set. A couple of yuears ago I did all the ships from Arcane Minis. With those the sections were larger and less modular but that made them a dream to print. The only issue is you really need multiple printers to keep from losing focus on a project like this. I ended up buying 3 extra printers over the course of the project. I also went to a larger 0.6 nozzlfor most if the items with a few at a 0.8 because the laser lines could be hidden in the other texture of the model.
Ship is awesome! I like the idea of the larger scale since it will work better with some of Star Wars games as well.
very cool!
That would be great for Stargrave.
Would work well in Starfinder. Can make custom ships in their system with ease.
With transparent window type parts, I like to sand them down with increasingly fine Zona polishing paper before applying the gloss coat to try to get the piece a little more transparent.
That's a great idea!
Vast grimm would work also
Wow, huge! Great video, I especially appreciate the lighting tips. How do multiple remotes and LED units work together?
Each remote works with every light. I bought two packs of these and verified this is the case.
Feels very Chris Foss
Traveler has been around since 1977.
Hmmm seen those RGB lights same shape on adult toy images.
Any way to get the modified files that allow for the LED to fit? Have you done a video showing how you make the holes to fit the LEDs?
I can share my modified files but keep in mind, it's for printing at 115% since I made it at 32mm scale. If you print at the standard 28mm, the hole will be too small.
Works for me. I was going to print it at the same size. @@gaminggeek241
Have you considered using 3D Gloop for fusing parts together? It will chemically weld the PLA and end up making a stronger bond that you'd get with CA glue. 2-part epoxy isn't a terrible choice, either, like you mentioned potentially using.
I've heard of it but never have used it. Might have to give it a try!
If you paint the tanks GREEN, it means they contain OXYGEN.
