  • My method for cleaning cornelius-style kegs for home brewing. It is a pretty simple process to clean a corny keg; rinse, dissemble, wash, reassemble, & rinse again.

    I have been making beer for many years, but never got into the kegging until today. I have some used tested kegs, now I know how to clean them thanks. Oh, yes, putting a nice coffee stout on tap today for Christmas.

    excellent video larry, about to get into kegging myself, wasn't sure how much of a pain it would be to clean and pull the keg apart but your video makes it look pretty straight forward!

    Great video, mate!
    Been looking into kegging my beer, and the cleaning bit was what was holding me back
    Found a dealer selling ones just like what you showed so I think I’ll be taking the plunge into this soon!

    Great video. Helps a first time kegger like myself. I was using 3.75g of PBW w/ 5 gal water but I think it's excessive. I like your approach better. Thanks again, Larry!

    Do you ever lube the rubber gasket? Is that supposed to be done after sanitation and racking? Or just for storage of the keg? Getting my first kegs tomorrow, can't wait!

    Hi. Would you recommend buying the refurbished kegs for sale on eBay? Going to start homebrew and not sure if I can trust those. Also not sure where else I can buy used kegs to keep my costs low. Thanks for the vids.

    Wanted to ask... Do you cut your fluid out dip tube or not? Seemed to be the thing to do at one time. Mike

    Dont just unscrew the posts, fully disassemble them as well for soaking and cleaning. Don't forget to use keg lube on all the o-rings, and the metal to metal sealing surfaces like post threads, liquid tube top/bottom surface, etc.

    Can you save and Reuse the PBW? Kinda expensive.

    Thank you Larry! Quick question: Does the PBW rinse out of the "dip line" when you shake it up with the rinse water?

    That way works, and you did a great job with the video, but manual cleaning is a bit too much effort for me. I got one of the Mark II (MII) keg washers and use it. I like the MII, but it's not the best quality (in my opinion, based on the fact that one of the little pieces broke off on first use) and it can be a bit cumbersome to use (sometimes getting the kegs to sit on it right is a challenge). Also, I think they should have included all of the attachments (fittings, tubing, etc...not the connectors, since some use pin and some use ball) to build the gas & liquid ports, the one I built works but it's a bit janky. All in all though I do like it better than manual cleaning with a brush.

    • @RandyandPetraJ
      @RandyandPetraJ 7 років тому

      Larry, Yes...cleaning bottles is a major PITA! I haven't bottled in a couple years...only to share a bottle with friends occasionally. The MII has an adapter so you can setup 2 hoses to connect to the gas/liquid ports and it flushes the tubes. I only take my kegs apart about every 5th use and have never had an issue with the level of cleaning (no infection and so forth). It works well. BTW, you can clean carboys with the MII too and other vessels will fit too, but you'd have to craft a way to keep them steady. That said, look around the web and you'll see some home built versions that are a bit cheaper...plus you can customize the size to clean bigger vessels. If I was doing it again, I'd probably build my own though...

    I always run fluid through all my kegs at each step, pbw, hot water, star San until I use again

    • @BEERNBBQBYLARRY

      I’ve been burned before by not removing and dissembling the posts to remove crap that gets stuck in the springs despite having run cleaner through them while assembled. So, now I usually remove/clean the post parts especially if there were hops or fruits used in the vessel.

    You don't soak the top half or third? why not turn it upside down too? I also give it a little CO2 and then hook it up to clean the lines and faucet. I'm not sure if that's necessary or not.

    • @JoeGraves24
      @JoeGraves24 4 роки тому +1

      Martin, a keg counts as one container or “bottle”. If you’re bottling you’ll have 50 or so 12 oz. bottles to clean. It’s the reason kegging is so much easier than bottling.

    Don't follow this video for cleaning advice. Larry does a great job of documenting homebrew but you should always thoroughly rinse your equipment that comes in contact with PBW solution. Way too lax about that in this video. PBW is not a sanitizing solution, it's a cleaner

    • @BEERNBBQBYLARRY
      @BEERNBBQBYLARRY  Рік тому +1

      I do rinse out the PBW in this video. I also never state or imply that it’s a sanitizer. It’s a cleaning video; not a sanitizing video.
