  • In this tutorial, we show you how to clean a keg used for beer and homebrewing. If you're a homebrewer, this is a very important process to know because you can't make good beer with dirty equipment. This process involves PBW cleaner (or the oxygen-based cleaner of your choice), hot water, a long pipe cleaner, and safety gloves. We give you a step-by-step walkthrough in this video so you can easily clean your own kegs of any size at home. We also show you how to remove parts from your keg, like the liquid and gas posts, and clean those as well. It's important to clean every single part of your keg, not just the hollow inside. The most essential part of this cleaning process is PBW (Powdered Brewery Wash) which is a cleaning product specifically for homebrewing applications. It is also important to remember the difference between cleaning and sanitizing, make sure to watch until the end to learn why both of these steps are important. Check out the resources below for brewing equipment, PBW, and Water Retention Mats.

    After scrubbing all parts with Oxy, we mount an exit hose to the fluid side, pressurize the gas side, then, while vigorously shaking the keg, rinse with several re-fills of RO water.

    It is also very much recommended to use eye protection when doing this.

    Lye with hot water is cheaper and more effective/cheaper. Please use PPE when using it.

      I know this is an old comment, but if you’re still looking, ball lock corny keg posts are either 11/16” or 7/8”, depends on the keg.

    This is probably a dumb question but what gloves do you use? Started looking at heatproof gloves then saw some are food prep grade. Unsure if that's a load of rubbish or not.

    I can see this video is from a couple of years ago but my PBW containing suggests leaving over night vs 5mins or so suggested in the video. Any advice I how long you need to leave it soaking?

    I typical just just some dish soap and rinse it out very verll then i sanitize with starsan. but this is very informative!

      Was your dish soap scented? If so, did it leave an off smell in your beer? I would be very hesitant using dish soap.

    If some solid particles go through the impeller of the pump, it may reduces its efficiency on the long run because of abrasiveness of the particles in contact with the impeller (friction). I would dissolve the solid fully before pumping. Sure, with usage the impeller has to be changed, but I would try to maximize its life expectancy to reduce maintenance cost.
    Cheers.

    Would Starsan be enough for sanitizing the keg

    • @kristianodegaard6682
      @kristianodegaard6682 5 років тому +1

      yeah for just sanitizing, but if it's not clean, sanitation becomes harder. PBW is just as easy as sanitizing.

    You confused me there when you said heat to 150 degrees when water boils at 100 degrees, had to have little think then.

  • @robviola9588
    @robviola9588 5 років тому +2

    Are your kegs stainless or aluminum? if they are stainless steel you forgot a very important step. Whenever you use a high alkaline cleaner such as PBW on stainless you need to passivate the stainless after rinsing. You can use acid #5 or high concentration of star san

    That's a good way to do it too, but I just take mine to work and run it in our can washing station. Can do 9 at a time 😁

    You can't sanitise something that's dirty, but can you use pbw solution as a sanitizer?

    • @phantomcreamer
      @phantomcreamer 4 роки тому +1

      No, it is a cleaner. It will remove organic debris and some inorganic deposits. Rinse it a few times and then use a sanitizing agent.

    no need to clean your kegs if you keep the beer flowing at all times.
    edit: of course you need to rinse them before filling them up
