How To Install a Floating Dip Tube in a Homebrew Corny Keg

  • Today I’m installing a floating dip tube into a corny keg! This should, in theory, give me a cleaner pour because the liquid “post” floats just below the surface of the homebrew in the keg instead of at the bottom with all the yeast and trub that precipitates when you chill the keg. *Equipment links below!

    The spring inside the post is called a "poppet", if you don't already know. Thought I'd share b/c I like the word. Great video!

    A good tip I've started using. Connect a blow off tube from your fermenter, to the beer out post on your keg, then either have a spunding valve on your gas out post or open the pressure release valve. When your beer is fermenting, all the Co2 will go into your keg and push out the oxygen. Saves money on using your gas bottle to purge the keg. 🍻

    These are great , cheap way of converting a 19L/5gallon keg for pressure brewing or a closed loop transfer. There are a few other options out there for a floating dip, Kegland 2" Tri-clamp ball lock tapping head conversion kit and a 50L/13gallon commercial Sanke keg. Just remove the spare. That's the option im using, looking at adding another floating dip tube to one of my Corny kegs, the kits are so cheap like $10. You have a good channel , hello from NZ.

    Love my floating dip tube. I’m using the clear beer system, no complaints thus far. I’ve been filling the keg to the top with starsan and then pushing it out with CO2 into a bucket, that way I know there’s no oxygen. Once the keg is full of CO2 I’ll begin the transfer. I like how you’re recycling the CO2. Thanks for the clever tip!

    Upspeak, also known as uptalk or high rising terminal (HRT), is a linguistic occurrence in which a speaker uses a rising inflection at the end of a declarative sentence. This rising intonation at the end of the sentence makes a statement sound like a question.

    Nice video, good idea, thanks for sharing :-) Just a thought - maybe you should also do the same in you conical fermenter, attach a floating pickup either in the lid or to the back of the drain tap. That way you are transferring from the clearer top of the fermented wash so less likely to transfer any sediment.

    Maybe we can use original dip tube, cut it and bend towards keg lid opening, so it visible and easy accesible to press in silicone tube?
    But. pull silicone tubing inside->out through post opening, and installing it outside, looks as best solution, if it fits back in :=).
    Note sure, mine is still not here. But if I will miss a little bit, I might drill post opening a bit?

    I love when you said you lost five gallons. Not that it's a good thing mind you. I always said you haven't brewed long enough if you don't have at least a few horror stories. That would be a awesome video of Brewers sharing things like that.

      Yeah I've lost 5 gals from a faulty pin lock, another from a faulty quick release on my keg, and a third from my dumb ass knocking an airlock off my Catalyst before going out of town (that one was the easiest to clean but the most disgusting for sure)

    Nice way to transfer. Low loss of CO2. You might turn the pickup tube up a little to avoid the trub at the bottom of the fermenter. The only issue I can see is that, if your beer is not cold crashed, it would be devilishly hard to know how close to full you are? I guess when you've displaced all the gas, it's as full as it is gonna get? if it's cold, you can see the condensation crawl up the keg.

    • @FloraBrewing
      @FloraBrewing  4 роки тому +1

      I just try to only brew as much as will fit in a keg, I don’t have a way to cold crash until it’s in a keg.

  • @imperia1999

    Think I'll still stick with the tube , as I'm the only one who drinks my beer. Wife doesn't like the beer I make or even the smell, so I'll have to have the trub myself. Always done a secondary transfer, but like yourself I've seen a few only do primary.

  • @mrb1664
    @mrb1664 4 роки тому +1

    I have some of those, not sure if the tubing on yours is the same size but with mine it goes inside the dip tube and the tube on the floating ball. This makes it much easier as you can insert the silicone tubing inside the dip tube before fitting it to the keg.

    • @FloraBrewing
      @FloraBrewing  4 роки тому +1

      That does seem easier. I was wrestling it a bit even before I turned the camera on

    • @mrb1664
      @mrb1664 4 роки тому +1

      @@FloraBrewing Yes, I did the same as you with the first keg I used them on, it's a PITA doing it that way. Unfortunately I found that pushing the silicone over the outside stretches it slightly so that when you try to push it inside it doesn't fit!
      The hook up of the keg to the FV to re cycle the CO2 is a good idea, I think the issue you had was because the keg was under pressure and the FV wasn't. Hence once you hook it up all the CO2 rushes to the FV. If you released the pressure on the keg after purging it'd be less dramatic.

      Fermenter > hose > liquid connect ball lock > keg > gas ball lock > hose > bung hole. If you put the hose that goes in the bung hole into a stopper (like what you put your airlock in) the gas pressure coming out of the keg will push the beer into the keg.

    Hey Sara. Just had a quick kegging question. Im having some issues with carbonation issues. So I'm thinking about changing all my posts and ball lock disconnects to outputs. My thought is that if it do this i can push CO2 through the dip tube to the bottom of the beer to help with CO2 absortion. what are your thoughts?

    • @FloraBrewing
      @FloraBrewing  4 роки тому +1

      If you're using ball locks, at least in my experience, you can put the gas fitting on the liquid post fine to push co2 into the bottom of the keg. I find that whenever I accidentally try to put the liquid on the gas it never works so it might actually be a design feature.
