, something separates me from other people". Then she sits and says "Everywhere... they're everywhere... they're not going to let me go. Herk Harvey totally understood the macabre and our natural fear of the unknown--especially the biggest unknown question of all: death of course, and not knowing what awaits on the other side (if there even is anything). To an extent, everyone is very curious but so many lock it away in the subconscious and try to avoid thinking about it whereas others explore it the duration of their whole lives basically in some form! The first time (years ago) especially, some of the scenes in this film were totally stark and jarring! He even is sort of exploring the concept of purgatory and our fear of being alone or abandoned. It is such a unique movie. I haven't read much about him; but he was definitely a smart, insightful dude, he knows what is creepy as heck. The only thing similar to this that I've ever seen is the Twilight Zone episode Perchance to Dream. Twilight Zone episode Night Call also captures fear of death and the decrepit similarly but not like Perchance. A couple of episodes the show NIght Gallery were really scary too. Cheers.

For a film with a budget of $33,000 USD "Carnival of Souls" is an innovative, imaginative work that still resonates today. Clearly Herk Harvey was entranced with European arts cinema of the time. His cast, camera and stripped-down organ score are inspired, and continue to fascinate independent film-makers.

This movie really captures PTSD, and how a traumatic incident can haunt every aspect of your life.
She seems like a reasonable person, then the ghost popping everywhere, and ppl not hearing her lead her to become increasingly paranoid, no longer trusting herself in normal life.
If there were no twist ending, this could absolutely be about a woman experiencing the after effects of trauma bc this is what it does to us until it eats away at people's relationships, self image, job, and leaves one untrusting of their own mind. It can take years after the initial event.
There's help today. It can take years to become undone by trauma, but it doesn't take years to repair the damage. Don't wait.
    God bless you ❤
    Great movie

Thank you for uploading. The quality was suprisingly good and the movie was quite entertaining. A beautiful woman. A tragic accident. A stern priest. A sleazy neighbour. A nosy landlady. An abandoned amusementpark in bright sunshine. Eventually the last 15 -20 minutes were quite creepy. The actress has such an aristorcatic face. Besides that: as someone who likes to look at old houses - that house had lovely original woodwork and even the tapestry looked elegant in black and white. And I would have loved to try that slide in the amusement park. I Imagine, that, when filming there, the whole team would have a fun day just doing so.

Surreal, haunting and strange, one of the best black and white horror movies ever made, in just 3 weeks, for only $33,000, a profound cinematic creation by this first and only time feature film director, like seriously wow.

This movie is a true classic and I bought a copy on DVD from a bargain bin years ago while passing a shop, but saw it on "Creature Feature" with Deadly Ernest when I was a kid, truly a brilliant movie!!! Too bad no English subtitles. Thank You very much UA-cam.

Makes us wonder who's the more frightening - the creepy neighbour or the Christian minister who sacks her for playing "evil music"!
A horror cinema gem, many thanks for upload.

I don’t think it was that she was playing “evil music”, it was that just was more or less just plunking away at the keys instead of playing a hymn and that was seen as disrespectful to the church. “These things have meaning, I assume they did to you!”

Seems like an inspiration for The Shining. The leading actress was great. The organ music was unnerving. The simple edits delivered. Great movie. No wonder it's in the Criterion Collection.

The entire budget for this film was THIRTY THOUSAND DOLLARS. They got a good make up artist and THAT was the one indulgence and from that alone created the subtle and unforgettable CREEPINESS of this film.

The director, Herk Harvey, spent most of his life directing industrial and educational films of such good quality, that he received many national and international awards. So he was not some film novice. Souls though was his only full length feature film. And amazingly, it only cost $33k to make Souls! He did start to make some other features, but none of them were even completed.

I first saw this film in the 60s when I was a teen. It was the eeriest, creepiest movie I'd ever seen and it still is. The fact that it was independently made on a shoestring makes it more than a horror classic and cult film, it's a phenomenon. Abandoned amusement parks always creeped me out after that. When Playland in San Francisco was shut down, it became a creepy place.
Later on, when I could drive, I'd take a sister or two and some neighborhood kids out to an old ruin in the country with a limestone cave nearby that shone white in the full moon. We'd always hear something or see something and go running back to the van and I'd tear out of there like the devil was after me. So much fun!

Carnival of Souls is a 1962 American independent horror film produced and directed by Herk Harvey and written by John Clifford from a story by Clifford and Harvey, and starring Candace Hilligoss. Its plot follows Mary Henry, a young woman whose life is disturbed after a car accident. She relocates to a new city, where she finds herself unable to assimilate with the locals, and becomes drawn to the pavilion of an abandoned carnival. Director Harvey also appears in the film as a ghoulish stranger who stalks her throughout. The film is set to an organ score by Gene Moore. Candace Hilligoss made very few films, much to our delight.
