  • Dr. Paul Carruthers feels bitter at being betrayed by his employers, Heath and Morton, when they became rich as a result of a product he devised. He gains revenge by electrically enlarging bats and sending them out to kill his employers’ family members by instilling in the bats a hatred for a particular perfume he has discovered, which he gets his victims to apply before going outdoors.

Horrible how the studio denied him to be more successful than being popular. The Director told others that he was a "softie" and would take any low offer given to him.
Bela was a kind and generous man.

Before her death years ago in the 1990s my mother was reminescing about her life. She blamed this movie for scaring her so badly (she was 20 yo at the time) that she never wore perfume after seeing it and would freak if she ever saw a bat. Over 50 years later she still remembered the movie, Lugosi's evil character, the perfume and the bats. Thanks for resurrecting this movie!

Here it is 2024, 84 years since this movie was made. It beats anything you could watch now. There were real actors the "special effects" were simple and are so much better than the over done effects of today. No cuss words, no nasty innuendos and nudity. I watch these movies over the current ones, this is real entertainment.

THE DEVIL BAT (1940), like all other movies during this period, was made under the strict censorship.of the Hays Code (in force from 1935 to 1968), which dictated that criminals had to be shown receiving punishment for their crimes.

Close ups of a fruit bat probably not a good idea if the intent is to be scary! They're very puppy-like. Here they lit it in a way to make it look a little creepy----and apparently gave this one something to chew on so its teeth would show. Didn't quite work. But...sort of an enjoyable old film.

Most everyone here seems to not fancy bats much. They're only flying dogs, are they not? Canines? Their faces appear dog-like, and thus the appellation "Flying fox." They should be more liked than they are.
Also, that was one DIRTY TRICK that Bela pulled on the nice young trusting guy, Roy and the other one, Tommy. I'm not sure I liked this role of Bela's - treacherous, envious and paranoid to a fault, plus shamelessly scheming . . . and murderous! Obviously, a deeply flawed and addled character, who GOT in the end his just desserts!!!
How would many here rate Lugosi with Lionel Atwill, he and his own bat bout, The Vampire Bat of 1933?

I love bats! They’re so smart and they eat small flying insects and fruit from trees. There are so many varieties of bats it’s hard to name them all. The largest most distinctive looking bat is called “a flying fox bat” and they live in Australia and other parts of the world. There is a vampire bat, They’re smaller and have pushed in little faces. They live mostly in South America. They eat insects, fruit and have been known to suck the blood on a cows neck or back area. The bat is so small, the cow doesn’t usually even notice the bat on him sucking his blood. Anyway, I love bats they’re fascinating peaceful creatures who stay as far away from humans as possible. They’re scared of us!!!!! Oh and you can search on UA-cam for flying fox bat recue services in Australia. They get stuck and rescued from electrified fences, wildfires, barbed wire fences, etc. These women bottle feed the babies and raise them until they’re ready to return to the wild.
