If you're planning a trip to the Los Angeles area and would like to be a contestant on the Jim Lange of "Name That Tune" or if you'd like to see a taping of the show, you're almost 29 years too late.
KIRO and KJR's New York Vinnie was a game show contestant? OMG!!! Awesome!!! Of course as a seattle area resident I remember him more from his time in seattle radio then from anything else. Awesome stuff :)
Thanks...I thought it would be a funny way to let people see a bit into my somewhat wild past. Now people in Pittsburgh can say I know what you looked like when you were younger!
That's the legendary Wrecking Crew bass player (and now a ukulele master) Lyle Ritz falling off his chair at the end of the show. (Lyle has since passed away.)
Wow! Is this THE Vinnie who appeared on this episode of Name That Tune? Did you have to pass a test of musical knowledge in order to become a contestant? What was Jim Lange like? How nice of you to post your appearance here! Bravo, New York Vinnie!
I just realized an interesting rule loophole - if you buzz in and guess incorrectly, your opponent gets a guess but doesn't get to hear any more of the song. So once you get a lead in the round, you should just buzz in the moment the band starts and guess wrong leaving your opponent without hearing the song so the song is scrapped. Keep doing that until all the songs are used up and you win.
I saw a player on another episode who I think was doing that. Or he was just really enthusiastic about buzzing in. They should have made a rule that you lose a point for wrong guesses.
Recorded from KNTV in San Jose, when they were indeed an ABC station to rival good ol' KGO in SanFran. However, given the title of "New York Vinnie" in the headline, I thought at first that this was recorded from WABC in New York City.
Daytime TV with no commercials for lawyers or pharmaceuticals or lawyers trying to sue pharmaceutical companies...hmm...It's like living in the Twilight Zone
His first name is Tony. I don't know what his last name is. The other band members are Fred Selden on sax, Lew McCreary and Gil Falco on trombones, Michel Rubini on piano, Lyle Ritz on bass, John and Tom Morrell on guitars, and Evan Diner on drums.
I think his name was Tony. The other musicians: Dr. Fred Selden, Lew McCreary, Gil Falco, Evan Diner, Michel Rubini, Tom Morrell and John Morrell. Basically the same band from Face The Music.
rollin558 can u ask goldenvmedia if he can upload a name that tune pilot episode from that has lori vs dan but has a slightly different game play any other name that tune 1984 episodes that he can find
This wheel format in Melody Roulette was used during the second TofC(one won by Pat Chialtas). The other wheel format was used during the Michael Lagmay TofC(finals aired 10/18/84 in Philly) which was the first one aired after the Elena Cervantes superchamp tourney (at least on KYW in Philly).
Especially the Golden Medley round. I watched all 20 of Jane Krakowski's episodes, and only two of them won the Medley. In Lange's version, I remember there was one month where they could NOT do a tournament, because only three people named 7 tunes in 30 seconds or less. In my view, the Golden Medley has to be the TOUGHEST bonus round in game show history. I'm pretty sure it was still rare when contestants managed to name all 7 tunes in Kennedy's NTT, though we'll never know for sure, since many of Tom's episodes are lost.
I use watch this show when I was six years old

hahawow. Vinnie Richichi is now the host of a midday sports radio program in Pittsburgh PA for those who don't know.
I loved this game show and loved playing it as well
I love this video. Every part of it, seriously.

Everyone dressed so nicely back then.

ths game show was a favorite to me when I was 4
I remember when this first aired in november 1984
Or was it late October?
@@JIMOTOOLE1949 Or earlier!
Until Ray DeLaPaz came on the show in the last month, Yvette Davis was the only contestant on the show to score three one-noters in Bid-A-Note.
JIMOTOOLE1949 I did not know that! Thanks for looking at the video!
That's the legendary Wrecking Crew bass player (and now a ukulele master) Lyle Ritz falling off his chair at the end of the show. (Lyle has since passed away.)
Thanx, I went back for that and it was worth it!
Ooooohhh!
great stuff, missed this show during its run
One month later, the contest winners were announced. I remember they flashed on the screen this contest is no longer in effect.
This must be the original broadcast, very rare to see those but amazing quality if it is.

Full Meal Deal for 7.99?! That's modern day pricing lol
Today, I suspect that's a 3-piece meal with biscuit and two sides. Still good!
7:54 or so... the term "Out of the Closet"... little did anyone know what that term would mean 20 or 30 years after.
It was already known
They knew what it meant. They were being cheeky.
Believe it or not, humor and gay people existed in the 80's
It meant the same thing as it does today.
15:13....Love that audience reaction!!!
Last 90s in watch is aired on Philippine TV in Name That Tune on RPN 9.
Recorded from KNTV in San Jose, when they were indeed an ABC station to rival good ol' KGO in SanFran.

And I've been told KGO aired this in San Francisco... I only saw NTT on the old USA and Family Channel reruns.
It's like Lawrence Welk but as a game show
Anybody know WHERE I can find this clip------> golden medley, HAP ?
It seems the bid a note songs and clues got easier during the Jim Lange era over the Tom Kennedy era. I got all of these from the clues.
Daytime TV with no commercials for lawyers or pharmaceuticals or lawyers trying to sue pharmaceutical companies...hmm...It's like living in the Twilight Zone
With so many syndicated shows coming and going, they'll soon have time enough at last. :-)

the show was a popular show.
tune topics was a round on the show and tune countdown was a round on the show.
the show is coming back in january 2021 and jane krawkoski will be hosting it.
That...was a very tough Golden Medley.
Or what was called Down and Dirty from the 1976 R-rated episode.
Go Pens!!
i know a lot of the tunes that tommy oliver and his orchestra played on the show.
"Columbia, Gem of the Ocean"?! What? Who has ever heard of that song?
I am shocked to see so many one note bids
Is Name That Tune still airing today?
It would be really hard today because. Every song sounds the same.

The reality is, to be honest wit ya. I mean, again.
How did it take them so long to guess Amazing Grace?
Maybe they're Muslim. :-)
Do you remember if you need to audition for this Show just to be chosen?
I never understood how anyone passed muster on this show; this made Jeopardy look easy.

The only thing I don't like is this version of melody roulette. Spinning the wheel 5 times with this would be much more fun.
The $25,000 Pyramid
"That landed on Double, right? That's a nice wheel...it would be a shame if something happened to it"
Leave the wheel...Grab the Canoli.
It was from November 1984, not October 1984.
vinnie bag of doughnuts
name that tune
Wrong 😑, Vinnie! October 15, 1984. LOL 😆!
She let time ran out (@ 23:28). She was afraid she might have not made it to the Tournament, esp. if she knew the last of the 2 tunes were.
tommy oliver came up with the tune topics round.
sometimes instead of tune topics tune countdown was on the show.
i can name that tune in five notes.
Name that f***ing tune!!!!
