  • Today on Buckle Up, Jasper reviews Honda's difficult second album. The e:Ny1 has come under fire from the wider automotive press for poor range, lackluster performance, safe design and a high cost to entry but have they got it all wrong? Looking at what you can actually buy these for on the forecourts we think they might have, but let's find out.
    Facing stiff competition in the form of the Hyundai Ioniq5, Tesla Model Y, Kia EV6, Toyota Bz4X, Subaru Solterra and Ford Mustang Mach E.

    I got the Topaz Blue one for £26.7k. AN AMAZING CAR for that price, so what you may have to charge a bit more. But for everyday, what a car for that price. The range is above 200 on motorways, only gos as low as 160 on freezing cold days and putting your foot down.

    • @BuckleUpShow
      @BuckleUpShow  2 місяці тому

      That's an impressive discount! Not sure about 200 miles on a motorway, you'd have to be driving at about 40 mph in spring with no climate control on to achieve that kind of range 🤣

    • @BuckleUpShow
      @BuckleUpShow  2 місяці тому +1

      Driving more slowly will reduce consumption, yes. Optimum speed for range whilst still making good progress is typically around 55 mph. You can, of course, just drive faster and charge a bit more often though. Depends on what you prefer!

    Have a look at other reviews regarding the low hung battery back..looks so bad..WTH was Honda thinking, i mean the wheel arches are hard to unsee but that battery pack could easily lead to problems over rougher roads or even some speed bumps.Question is..if any damage caused will Honda cover it?

    • @BuckleUpShow
      @BuckleUpShow  5 днів тому

      This is not a vehicle designed to be taken over rough off-road surfaces. Whilst the battery pack does hang slightly low, it still has slightly more ground clearance than a car such as the Audi TTS. Therefore driving over rougher road surfaces and speed bumps should not be a problem - Honda will therefore be very unlikely to cover damage caused by a user driving in an inappropriate manner for the road conditions.

    Just ordered an advanced in this colour for 1k deposit 299 a month on PCP. For the spec on offer there is absolutely nothing on the new car market that comes close to that deal. At 42k no thanks but under 300 a month be stupid not to consider it. In terms of range anything near 200 is good enough for me. Lived with a mokka e for 3 years with a real world range of around 100 miles in winter. Only critique i have, and never thought I'd say this, its too fast for the type of car. In sport mode the pick up is comical. I wonder if they dialed it down would it achieve better range? The amount of old people who are likely to buy this car and shoot out a junction into a hedge probably explains its group 40 insurance bracket! I'm also willing to bet if they streamlined those wing mirrors they could add 10 miles.

    As charging is capped at 78kw?

    • @BuckleUpShow
      @BuckleUpShow  2 місяці тому

      Yes, unfortunately the max charge speed is 78kW. This means that you can max out a 50 kW charger and nearly fully utilise a 100 kW charger, but there will be no point in trying to use a charger that offers speeds higher than that as you will not see a faster charger than you would on the 100 kW one 🥲

    This would be a great car if it were only competing with Toyota; unfortunately, there are tons of other far better options. Even Nissan has more interesting options with the Ariya and Leaf.
    Perhaps Honda is relying on their hardcore fanbase to replace their gasoline HR-V with this in the future while not losing out on their YoY with their financing options. I can't see people who aren't already big fans of Honda getting this car over the others.
    Personally, I think an electrified CR-V would've been a better base for this price, but they probably didn't want all the sales to go towards that just yet.

    • @BuckleUpShow
      @BuckleUpShow  4 місяці тому +1

      I think that, ultimately, the thing that will sell these is the surprisingly good monthly financing offers that are available to try and shift them. It's not an objectively bad car, and in some areas it's actually pretty good vs rivals) but there aren't enough stand out features to make a buyer who is more interested in cars choose this over a competitor.

      @Wakabatan 4 місяці тому

      Right, it'd be an easy decision for people who are too scared to try new brands with good financing. Ultimately, the biggest downside of this car seems to be pricing. Imagine if it went against the likes of MG4 without financing; then it'd be very competitive (and make a great thumbnail).

      I've just bought one having never owned a Japanese car, let alone a Honda.
